Back in October I got an email from Milly Khan, a Neuro-Physiotherapists working at Guys and St Thomas’ Hospital explaining the benefits of high intensity exercise for people living with Parkinson’s disease.
In her message she said: "You may not be aware but high intensity exercise is really important for Parkinson’s patients, especially those in the early stages of the disease. When people work at a high HR level an amazing chemical called BDNF is released within the brain.
This chemical increases the brain's ability to change and adapt. Recent research suggests that doing 30-45 minutes of high intensity exercise 3x a week can create new neural pathways in the brain. This supports the theory that exercise may slow the progression of Parkinson’s but more research is needed to confirm this. Either way, exercise has shown to improve people’s walking, balance, sleep and quality of life."
Thank you Milly for inviting me to Guys and St Thomas’ to learn more and to film a special workout for people living with Parkinson's 💙
If you would like to try the workout you can find it on my YouTube Channel “The Body Coach TV”

Chartered Neurological Physiotherapist
Neurological physiotherapy is a branch of physiotherapy specialising in the rehabilitation and management of conditions affecting the brain and nervous system.
This might include; Stroke, Multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, Brain Injury, Guillain-Barre Syndrome, Transverse myelitis and cerebellar ataxia, as well as other neurological conditions. Neurological conditions often present with diverse and complex impairments, so optimal therapy is best provided by a physiotherapist with expert knowledge and training within neurology.
Neuro Potential is a service run by Lucy Flood an experienced physiotherapist skilled in treating neurological conditions. Rehabilitation is provided in the patient’s own home; thereby minimising fatigue and allowing therapy to be task-specific to the individual’s environment.
Where appropriate, support can also be provided in the local community, for example sessions in a local gym, or swimming pool.
