🚶‍♂️✨ Client Spotlight: David's Incredible Journey! ✨🚶‍♂️

I was very pleased to hear from my client David, who just completed a Wales coastal walk, an astounding 400-mile walk in 40 days with only 4 rest days! 🏅 Despite being an experienced hiker, David encountered some Achilles pain early on from walking long distances on concrete surface.
These overuse injuries can occur when our bodies aren't accustomed to the impact of hard surfaces. Fortunately, with timely sports massage treatments and personalised advice, David managed his symptoms and was able to keep moving forward.
Here's what David had to say about his experience:
"Hi Marit, just to let you know that I completed my Wales coast walk on Friday when I got to Aberystwyth. I had no further problems with my feet and I want to thank you again for enabling me to continue walking.😊 I'll add a good review on Google for you.
I hope to return next year to walk the second half of the path from Aberystwyth to Chepstow.
I've send a selfie I took near Pwllheli with Snowdonia in the background. Thank you again 🙏🙏🙏"
Massage therapy not only eased David's pain but also enhanced his recovery, allowing him to successfully finish his amazing journey. Your achievements are very inspiring, David! A massive well done!

Are you experiencing discomfort or pain related to your job or everyday activities? You might be dealing with symptoms of repetitive strain injuries (RSIs). These injuries occur due to repetitive motions, overuse, or poor ergonomics, leading to discomfort, pain, and reduced functionality in affected areas of the body.
Some of the common forms of RSIs are;
🤕💊 Tendinopathies: Inflammation of tendons caused by repetitive motions or overuse.
✍️💻 Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Compression of the median nerve in the wrist due to repetitive hand and wrist movements.
🥎🎾 Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis): Overuse of forearm muscles, commonly from activities like tennis or typing.
🏌️‍♀️💪Golfer's Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis): Similar to tennis elbow but affects the inner side of the elbow.
🎮 🤳De Quervain's Tenosynovitis: Inflammation of tendons in the thumb caused by repetitive thumb movements, common in gamers.
Identifying aggravating activities and understanding the underlying causes are crucial steps in managing and treating these conditions effectively. If these activities can be minimised or modified this can greatly help with your recovery.
Massage therapy can help by providing pain relief, enhancing circulation, and accelerating the body's natural recovery process— I can also provide you with any exercises to prevent these issues from reoccurring. Reach out to me for a chat to see if I'm the right fit to help you on your rehabilitation journey 📥📲

Pain isn't just a nuisance; it's a performance killer. When pain creeps in, it disrupts your ability to excel in your sport. Let's talk about the pain cycle:
🔄 It starts with activity avoidance, which leads to progressive deconditioning. As pain worsens with increased inactivity, it becomes a vicious cycle of avoidance and further pain. This cycle doesn't just affect the body; it has a psychological impact too, which in turn can increase pain perception.
Pain doesn't always mean injury. Understanding the science behind pain is crucial. There's a difference between acute pain from tissue damage and chronic pain.
In some cases, the nervous system becomes hypersensitive to pain signals, meaning it becomes more responsive to stimuli. This heightened sensitivity can amplify the perception of pain even in the absence of tissue damage.
Psychological factors like emotions, stress, anxiety, and mood can also influence the perception of pain.
Often complete avoidance from activity isn't the answer. How can massage be part of a multifaceted approach on your road to recovery?
Massage techniques promote better circulation, delivering oxygen and nutrients to tissues while removing waste products. This can help reduce inflammation and promote tissue healing, easing pain.
Massage triggers the release of endorphins, which are the body's natural painkillers. These neurotransmitters inhibit the transmission of pain signals and induce feelings of relaxation and well-being.
Tight muscles can contribute to pain and discomfort. Massage helps relax tense muscles, reducing pressure on nerves and alleviating pain.
Massage stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation and reducing stress levels. This can lower the perception of pain.
Massage can activate sensory receptors in the skin, blocking pain signals from reaching the brain through the gate control mechanism. This helps modulate pain perception and provide relief.
Remember, pain shouldn't hold you back from performing your best. With the right approach, you can break the cycle.

For all of you with neck and shoulder pain (and there's A LOT of you)!
A high percentage of my clients suffer from shoulder and neck pain. This is sometimes a consequence of sitting at a desk, poor posture and lack of movement during the day. A head forward posture rounds the upper back, placing strain on the tendons and muscles between the shoulder blades. The tips of the shoulders curve inward, overly stretching that connective tissue, too.
Stretches, simple exercises, and relaxation techniques can be the key to easing the tension in your shoulders while working at your desk. Take breaks frequently throughout the day to pause your desk activity and do some simple stretches/mobilization.
Getting some treatment can really help ease some of that discomfort, and I can help you implement some small changes to your day that can get you ok the path to better shoulder/neck health and mobility.
My practice now has a new chair to make you as comfortable as possible when we work on some of those tight muscles associated with neck and shoulder pain.

🤸Are you an athlete or fitness enthusiast who is looking for a way to reduce your risk of injury? If so, consider the benefits of sports massage.
Sports massage is an often overlooked but very beneficial way to help prevent injuries when playing sports or taking part in your own exercise regime. It works by increasing circulation, flexibility and range of motion which all help support strong, healthy muscles. Massage can also provide pain relief for tight or over-stressed muscles, resetting them back to a normal state of function. Not only does this promote a speedy recovery from activity but it can also stop problems before they arise. Additionally, this type of massage encourages the lymphatic system to remove waste from the body quicker, reducing post-activity soreness. Those involved in high intensity sports or who are at risk of injury should look into options for sports massage for maximum protection and success in their activity
The website gives a brief explanation of the treatments I offer and how they may benefit you. So check out

Instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) is a technique we often use in physical therapy. IASTM works like a standard massage, but specialized instruments are used in place of a physical therapist’s hands. By using different tools, angles and pressures, your therapist can focus on a specific layer of soft tissue during treatment.
Targeted IASTM treatments can have a number of benefits, such as:
🔸Faster pain relief
🔸Improved mobility
🔸Quicker rehabilitation and recovery
By focussing on specific areas to relieve stiffness and improve range of motion the client may find it easier to perform exercises recommends to strengthen or mobilize the injured area. This in turn promotes healing and can speed up the return to normal function.
Anyone with soft-tissue pain, injuries or conditions can benefit from IASTM. These often include athletes, warehouse workers or others who perform a repeated motion many times per day. Some of the many conditions we can treat with IASTM include:
🔸Excessive scar tissue
🔸Forms of tendinitis or tendinopathy, including Achilles tendinitis, golfer’s and tennis elbow
🔸Muscle and ligament strains
🔸Running injuries, such as plantar fasciitis and iliotibial band syndrome (IT band)
I am looking forward to being able to incorporate this modality into my treatments and have my clients benefit from this very soon. Any questions please speak to me at your next appointment 🗣️ or send a message 📥🙂

Incidental activity is any activity built up in small amounts over the day. For example, walking up the stairs or to the bus stop.
Why is incidental activity important?
Physical activity is a major factor in preventing and reducing the risk of many health conditions (eg. heart disease, diabetes and some cancers).
.
Physical activity can be accumulated in small amounts through the day or as a single longer session. These two types of activity produce similar health benefits
Examples of incidental activity:
At Work
• Walking up stairs instead of taking the lift or escalators
• Cycle or walk to work instead of driving
• Get off the train or bus a couple of stops early or park further away and walk
• Organise a weekly exercise session at work and encourage everyone to get involved
At Home
• Do some gardening or mow the lawn
• Do the housework instead of hiring help
• Go for a short walk before breakfast, after dinner, or both!
• Be active while watching television
(eg. exercise bike or treadmill)
Leisure
• Park further away from the shopping centre and walk the extra distance
• While at the shops, do a few laps of the centre
• Make your leisure activities more active
• Walk at golf instead of using a buggy
• Walk along the beach
• Throw a football at the park
• Organise active family outings
• Try the many bicycle tracks
• Go for a bushwalk

😴 Sleep allows the brain and body to slow down and engage in processes of recovery, promoting better physical and mental performance the next day and over the long-term. What happens when you don't sleep is that these fundamental processes are short-circuited, affecting thinking, concentration, energy levels, and mood.
🛌 Therefore rest is vital for better mental health, increased concentration and memory, a healthier immune system, reduced stress, improved mood and even a better metabolism.
😌 Downtime between workouts (whether you're lifting, doing cardio or training for a sport) is when our bodies have a chance to actually build muscle. Strenuous workouts cause muscle breakdown, while rest allows our bodies to build it back up.

Here are four reasons you should try a sports massage:
1️⃣ To reduce pain
Pain can affect any part of the body. A bad back is one of the most common complaints.
Tight and damaged muscles are painful and really benefit from being released. Those tense muscles also hold on to waste products such as lactic acid, so a deep tissue massage will help get the fluids and nutrients flowing and will help the body to release its own natural endorphins.
2️⃣ To relieve tension and stiffness
Deep massage combats tension and stiffness by warming and stretching the tissues and increasing blood flow to the muscles. This helps the muscles to move more easily and flexibly.
3️⃣ To assist recovery from 'delayed onset muscle soreness' (DOMS)
Sometimes called “muscle fever”, DOMS is the painful, stiff feeling that usually comes on after exercise that was particularly strenuous or unfamiliar to your body. It appears hours - or even days - later. A sports massage will speed up recovery from DOMS.
4️⃣It can make you feel good
Athleticism isn't all about physical strength. Most of us will know how great it feels to have even a simple, relaxing back massage. An intensive, targeted sports massage has many positive effects on your psychological wellbeing, which helps improve performance and recovery. The specialist techniques will encourage the body to release its own mood-enhancing chemicals, dopamine and serotonin. This helps to increase calmness and focus - and to reduce anxiety.
If you're unsure how I can help, please message me with any questions 🙂

I often get asked if sports massage can help with a range of different pathologies, niggles, injuries or pain symptoms.
Sports massage is best viewed not as a one-time cure for long-term problems.
For acute or chronic injuries, treatment may just be the first step to recovery and should be combined with rehabilitation exercises which will often involve mobilization, stretching and/or strengthening work.
Although some issues—recent, but not severe—can be helped by just one, or a few, massages. And it is not uncommon for clients to experience immediate subjective relief of symptoms post treatment.
Massage can help maintain overall muscle health by identifying areas of tension and addressing them before an injury occurs. It increases tissue flexibility and muscle relaxation, improves range of motion, relieves trigger points, as well as reduces adhesions.
With this in mind, most people could benefit from getting regular bodywork in the same way that you might frequently check your car’s oil level and tire pressure—a preventative approach that to seeks to keep the machinery running as smoothly as possible.
This more nuanced view of sport massage puts it in the category of other health-supporting practices, such as getting enough sleep and eating a varied, nutrient-dense diet. These practices allow your body to better withstand the demands of training and increase your chances of remaining injury-free, so that you feel more able and eager to train at the level you want, and can achieve the consistency that leads to true improvements in performance.
