SNAKE! ๐Ÿ๐Ÿฆด๐Ÿคฉ
Fabulous work from our Zooarchaeologist Jessica Waterworth, and of course our resident reptile expert extraordinaire Marina CG was on hand to confirm!
Always an absolute pleasure to work with Archaeology Wales , but this was extra special!

The zooarchaeologists at archaeology.biz (many thanks to Jessica Waterworth) made an unusual discovery in an assemblage from one of our sites recently. Two snake vertebrae (Viperidae/Colubridae) were recovered from potential Iron Age deposits at a site in Northamptonshire.

While unlikely to have resulted from human activity, the remains provide valuable information about the diversity of species within the local environment at the time and along with other microfauna identified, can be useful indicators of past environmental conditions.

This finding highlights the importance of environmental sampling on site. The remains are very small and easy to miss during excavation. Bulk soil sampling allows for this sort of evidence to be recovered, broadening our understanding of archaeological sites.

Understanding the diversity of species in the past is particularly relevant to the rewilding conversation and combined with other environmental data, it can also help with the understanding of past climatic change as well as environmental change as a result of human action.

13/02/2023

Today we welcomed prehistoric pottery specialist Dr Alex Gibson to our offices for the day to share his expertise with our whole team! ๐Ÿบ๐Ÿ”ฌ

Hand-built pottery, from the Neolithic through to early medival, can be extremely tricky. People using the same clays to hand build pots over 1000s of years. Today, we learned a thing or two about recognising different forms, fabrics, and decoration to give us clues about the age of hand-built pots.

It was a fabulous day! (brain is a bit melty, though ๐Ÿซ )

Also, I really hoped for an impressive shirt, like the good old days when he taught David and I at the University of Bradford, and people, he did not disappoint! ๐Ÿคฉ
