Joey's Beer Club
Welcome to Joey's Beer Club, the non-exclusive beer club. We would like to share with you the best c
We are super lucky to have the hottest brewery on the UK craft scene right now pretty much on our door step, .
This beer, Locals IPA, was our pick of last years with bold Nelson Sauvin hops (which happens to be our favourite π) oozing out!
Some beer is better by can, and some by keg. For us, Locals is more for the keg. That being said the fluffy and light fruity flavours where there in abundance and the 6% IPA didnβt disappoint.
Beak can do no wrong, even in the reasonably short time they have been around for, and they are producing insanely good beer. We highly recommend the full range and those who like a Porter, Pencil is particularly good π
Locals (in the can) - we would score this at 4/5 with it not quite hitting the heights of it on the tap (which is more the 4.7)
Cheers
Joey
*Spoiler alert* This is bloody delicious π
This looked like a match made in heaven as soon as we saw the labelβ¦ Kveik Black IPA π€€
Our love for Black IPA goes back a while, having discovered it at one of our first , where were showcasing and we barely left their stand after trying it! Since then we have been looking for one that rivals it and here we go! The guys at have pulled it out the bag ππΌ
For us, the confusion of looking at a stout and drinking an IPA is all the fun with a Black IPA and this has nailed it.
ππΌyou have the traditional aromas of the Kveik base and a hint of orange with the slightest touch of lime.
π
this is where the party is at! Firstly silky smooth, leaving a very mild citrus flavour on the tongue. Then this hoppy explosion comes to life; the dark malts play a part in bringing together the creamy, ye**ty base, combined with the citrusy lemon and orange notes which turn into a smoky blueberry and cherry lasting flavour. It sounds like a lot going on, perhaps too much, but it pulls together perfectly (and we mean⦠perfectly)
This Black IPA is frankly amazing, truly fantastic! If you like the texture and look of an easy drinking, creamy stout, as well as the hoppy flavour of a citrusy Pale, here is your next beer. The JBC score for this Kveik IPA is 4.7/5 (top of the JBC leader board π) The only issue we have with it is that we only bought one bottle this time.
Cheers
Joey
Well then, _& this is quite spectacular ππΌ
First of the weekend and I hope it sets the tone. Thick on the ππΌ with lots of pine notes but then moves to a deep peachy flavour on the π
. A style we have got off lately and this has given us a NEIPA boost.
Happy Friday, we hope you find a beer equal to this over the weekend π please share any you do!
Cheers
Joey
An absolutely gorgeous DDH Pale from π
ππΌfresh, almost creamy
πstraw yellow, light fluffy foam
π
slightly straw like, bitterness comes through nicely across the whole tongue, zesty citrus develops in the back of the mouth π
We picked this up recently on a trip up to Northumberland and very pleased we did (even if we did pay an arm and a leg for it in a local village shop). A bit βout of seasonβ in terms of this being a lovely sunny summer beer but who does want a DDH Pale all year round?!
Plenty of body but not sickly at all, it is certainly a beer and brewery to look out for π
JBC verdict is a solid 4.1/5
Cheers, Joey

Next up is one of 360 Degree Brewing Company showcase beers in the form of a juicy and hazy NEIPA - Green Monster, 6%. The name and artwork found on the can is based on the Boston Red Sox Fenway Park home, where the "Green Monster" wall was the target of the big hits that would take the ball over 90 meters away from the home plate (our baseball knowledge is pretty limited). Headline hops include Simcoe, Galaxy and Centennial, some selection and set to be a bold beer.
π Heavy tropical aromas with pineapple standing out. It smells like there was no holding back on the DDH(ing) here.
πVery hazy and straw yellow.
π
Definitely juicy with huge tropical notes coming at you from the off. Bitterness lingers on the tongue to bring you that bitter/sweet combo which work in isolation but also pull Green Monster together to even out a well balanced NEIPA. There is a slightly earthy/pine finish once the juice goes, coming from the ever popular Galaxy hops, a great combination of flavour.
A very popular beer style currently, but we find some NEIPA's deliver more than others - and with that said Green Monster is certainly delivering a very decent beer for us. The big bold juicy notes matched with that lasting bitterness (from what we can only imagine was an onslaught of hops) give this NEIPA quite the flavour. Where it stands out for us is the use of oat and wheat, this feels like it gives the beer a great base for the main flavours to flourish. The more we try oat-based beers, the more we are enjoying them. Our only comment to push Green Monster up in the rankings would be the end flavour lingering on just a tiny bit more; the build up is great but we would like the taste to stay a second or two more to finish it perfectly. If you like your hazy juicy beers, this needs to go on the list. We are scoring Green Monster a solid 4/5.
Cheers
Joey

The first of our beer reviews and we start off with a Hazy Pale Ale - Double Act, 4.5%. This is said to be "juicy" and "bold" which, looking at the headline hops of Citra and Equanot, gets our full attention π
π Very thick murky haze which is almost dark yellow. A decent fluffy foam which stays around for a fair bit
ππΌ Full and fruity; peach, melon and lychee... this is a proper fruit salad
π
Instantly you get acidity, brought out by the bitterness of the high alpha hops. However this then makes room for the sweet peach flavours from the aromas which take over the mouth (in a great way) and almost act as a palate cleanser from the initial bitterness π€€
The bitter/sweet combo gives this beer a true balance and perhaps is the reasoning for the name "Double Act" π€·π»ββοΈπ€·π»ββοΈ The headline hops work hand in hand; Citra giving it a natural citrus, bitter feel, and Equanot coming in big with an easy drinking, fruity feel. We have had Double Act in cask and would say that the can delivers a bigger flavour punch ππΌ
Starting off well, this easy drinking Hazy Pale scores a 3.8/5
Cheers,
Joey

A beer to make Good Friday even better... Our first encounter with comes in the shape of their Nelson Rye IPA - Mission - coming in at 7%.
π Dark amber, but poured with an unusual blush pink tint. Decent foam, and pretty still in the glass
ππΌ Lychees, red berries, strawberry laces and pear drops. Almost sounds like a sweet shop, doesn't it?
π
A complex taste journey; starts by bringing through the strawberry that came from the aroma, but then moves to a dry, bitter feeling on the tongue, finally developing into a darker, forest fruit flavour - with a hint of cherry in the after taste. The bitterness from the Nelson hops brings balance to the sweet flavours by adding a dryness and preventing the sugar rush that you might expect from the smell!
The rye base allows the hop profiles to play their part perfectly in this really well balanced IPA. The 7% strength is hidden extremely well in this flavoursome IPA, which could be dangerous if you got a taste for it on a sunny afternoon like today! This is a fantastic IPA that we're scoring 4.2 / 5. The only thing we'd say is that the hint of cherry at the end gives this a slight Belgian feel, which isn't our taste, but that's purely personal preference. Look forward to trying more from this brewery!
Cheers,
Joey
An extra special craft beer review today and one that takes us back a few years to 6 packs for Β£5 from Unwins off licence (remember them?!) and drinking in the parkβ¦ deja vu, donβt you think?.
The iconic Original Lager comes in at a sessionable 4% and boasts 100% British barley, and is described as βperfectly balanced with a great refreshing tasteβ... letβs see about that claim.
π A crystal clear glass full of bubbles, this is a lively number and odd to see in a glass rather than out of a can at the park. Overall a light amber fizzy liquid with a decent foam.
π yup, just as we remember, punchy malt with a bit of a tinnie aroma
π
On to the best bit, as we move the JBC glass (of course) closer to the mouth; we can hear the bubbles and with the initial gulp, well - itβs keeping us in suspense alright. 3 seconds go by and we finally get a hint of barley and a whole lot of fizz finishing with that nostalgic, slightly tinnie aftertaste.
βPerfectly balanced with a great refreshing tasteβ - well, we suppose this is true; much like an empty seesaw is balanced, so is Carling, and it certainly wet our throat so refreshment is there. If you are looking for a punchy European lager full of flavour with a balance of malt and hop, put your can of Carling back on the shelf, this isnβt for you. We canβt really give you a time when this would be your go-to lager, but stranger things have happened over this past year, and at 4 cans for Β£4.20 some of our frugal fansβ ears might perk up. We are scoring this a solid 0.5/ 5 - after all, it was cold and the can didnt leak.
Cheers
Joey
Just looking at this branding gets us excited for beery days out in London again, as has grown well in recent years, and you can normally find yourself a pint throughout the day ππΌπ»
Our first review of this brewery's beer and it's one of their headliners - JUPA - a 5.5% "juicy, fruity pale ale". Containing Simcoe, Citra and Mosaic hops, JUPA is said to be juicy, bold and big on tropical flavours... ππ₯
π Ever so slight haze and quite big on the fizz (you can hear it in the glass)
ππΌ As the can suggests, very tropical, big on pineapple with a hint of papaya to get the senses going. The Simcoe and Citra combination working together to deliver the fruitiness
π
First thoughts are that the aromas don't develop into the taste as much as we had hoped. There is an initial burst of pineapple, but this soon moves aside and is taken over by more of a nod towards a Czech lager. It feels that the Citra/Simcoe are all aromatic and it is Mosaic that delvers the main flavour.
This isn't the first time we have tried JUPA but it is in can. When drinking from keg we have been treated to the big fruity notes that the can suggests, but, for some reason, they haven't come through in this one. If the can states juicy, we want juicy, and not just on the nose. We know this is a great beer (on keg at least) but on this particular occasion it hasn't delivered what we were hoping for and score it appropriately at 2.8/5. We will be trying another can and will update if this was a glitch...
Cheers,
Joey
Sun dropping and TGIF π seems appropriate to crack open this colourful chap. One of the best sellers, now in its more grown up 440ml can. Wilde is a fruity 4.4% East Coast Pale Ale which balances its flavours well; a number of tropical fruits from pineapple to mango, whilst being light enough not to be sickly at all.
These new 440ml cans are part of the EXCLUSIVE offer, 12 cans delivered with access to an online tasting session for just Β£28. Follow the link in the bio and use βJBCtastingβ at the checkout to save up to Β£9.50.

To prove that we practice what we preach, we treated ourselves to a range of the βFresh Dropβ cans from ππ» We love their beer from the tap when we visit , so seeing that we could get hold of this whilst the pubs are shut, was a dream π The beers are poured and canned at the brewery so come super fresh! Cans come in packs of 3 (1320ml) and prices range from Β£6-Β£7.50 (very decent value).
We went for:
First Tracks, 3.2% Pale
Stout For Now, 5% breakfast stout
Beyond The Surface, 6.5% DDH IPA
Between The Lines, 8.5% DIPA
All four were stunning; from the fruity low ABV First Tracks, to the heavy hitting Between The Lines DIPA π₯ Our pick was Fresh Tracks as it delivered absolutely everything we wanted with its juicy, passion fruit aroma and heavily hoppy, citrus flavour - mega flavours from such a low ABV pale.
We aren't sure how long this will be available from their web-store, but highly recommend giving it a try. 5/5 for the idea and not far off that for the taste of this fine beer range π
Cheers,
Joey
- Tarrant Street, Table Beer, 3.4%
A style of beer that is becoming ever more popular. Long gone are the days where it was only coming from , a number of breweries are now adding this style to their range.
π Light and very hazy with a good lasting foam
ππΌ Extremely floral and almost NEIPA like in the aroma
π
Hard hitting with a juicy burst and super light, but the big floral notes from the aroma come through in the flavour. Again, it smells like an NEIPA and carries that through in the taste; Tarrant Street is packing huge levels of hops and massive flavour as a result.
This is up there for us as a big player in the sub 4% beer category. The amount of flavour that comes from a decent table beer is always a huge nod to the genius that brews it ππ» It does remind us more of a NEIPA but either way, it is bloody lovely. We hold Sonoma as the pinnacle of sub 4% beer (and craft beer to be honest!) but Tarrant Street is nipping at the heels with a massivly impressive 4.3/5. Supping on this on a warm day at the beach - the dream! ππΌ
We have been really impressed with the couple of beers from Arundel Brewery that we've tried and luckily may have more to come!
Cheers,
Joey
The first review from a brewery that we have a lot of time for, having had some great visits to their tap room on the Bermondsey Beer Mile. and their canned Best Bitter - "The Ordinary Bitter", 3.7%
π Dark amber and not what you would expect from your normal "brown beer" style
ππΌTrue to the beer style, it's malty and sweet with a hint of orange and red berries
π
A pretty sweet caramel flavour with a note of spice to finish. There is a biscuit-like lasting aftertaste to this that again comes directly from the malts. A very traditional beer style in a can... not something you see a lot of and we aren't really sure on it. We aren't certain that the beer needs the carbonation, and we would rather have this from the bottle or straight from the cask.
Overall, we don't feel that the beer suits the canned format. We may not be thinking outside the box, but Best Bitters in cans - not for us π
π»ββοΈ The Ordinary Bitter is true to its style with the caramel flavours taking control, but the slightly spiced notes were great and would maybe have developed at a slightly warmer temperature. As the name suggests, we think this is pretty ordinary, and score it at 2.8/5.
NEVERTHELESS, we have sampled a number of beers from Anspach and Hobday and have been impressed with them; the IPA and the Pale in particular. So, don't be put off from trying them - infact, we encourage you to give them a go, as they are currently offering 15% off on their online shop with code "STOCKPILE".
Cheers,
Joey
The last of our Thornbridge Brewery Beer Club box and we are finishing big with Necessary Evil. This whopping 13% stout has been resting nicely in bourbon barrels for 8 months, and it promises to deliver some serious flavour. We will put our hands up and admit that we wouldn't normally go for this style, but that is the joy of a Beer Club box, taking us out of our comfort zone.
π Jet black (as you would expect) but a lot more lively than we expected. Bubbly foam which disappears after 30 seconds or so
ππΌ The sweet bourbon aromas come through instantly, hitting us as soon as the cap came off! After the strong bourbon, a rich chocolate smell takes over.
π
The aromas come through in the taste with big bourbon and chocolate notes taking over the mouth. There is a slight hint of vanilla but this is very much in the background and overpowered by the bourbon. The way the flavours work is interesting, as the bourbon and chocolate work individually by popping up and taking over your taste buds one at a time.
Firstly lets just say, this was a seriously specialist beer to finish on. We would never pick it up ourselves but we can 100% appreciate why it is in the box, which really has delivered some outstanding beers to try. Necessary Evil has picked up flavour from every second of being in the bourbon barrels. For us, the chocolate worked really really in complimenting the bourbon and without it, it would have been far too overpowering as a stout. Super specialist but we'd recommended it to anyone who likes bourbon and chocolate (and of course stout) in isolation as we think you might like this! Very unusual but we like that every so often and score Necessary Evil a 4.1/5.
Overall the Thornbridge Beer Club box has been fantastic and we are so pleased that you get 2X (of most), which is something that most beer subscriptions do not offer. We highly recommend giving it a go for a month... What is the worst that can happen π
Cheers
Joey
Here is one for those on a Gluten Free diet - AM:PM, a 4.5% Session IPA from Thornbridge Brewery Beer Club box. This beer has been part of the core range for a while now and is available in cask, keg and bottle, of which we have tried the latter two before. When it comes to gluten free beers, we find it is like trying to find a good alcohol free beer about 5 years ago - few and far between.
π Light amber colour with an equally light foam
ππΌ Strong aroma of mango and (those who remember) Tutti Frutti sweets. The label states pineapple, tangerine, guava and passion fruit and it certainly delivers that in the smell
π
This session IPA starts off slightly bitter and a bit sharp, but then develops a crisp, biscuit malt flavour which continues throughout. This has a slight lager feel to it thanks to the fizz in the mouth and the sharpness.
From the description, we were expecting a super fruity IPA but the fruits stay mainly in the aromas. AM:PM (for us) is a decent everyday session IPA; nothing out of the ordinary but doing its job, which is no disrespect to the beer at all. If you are looking for a big punchy juicy IPA, it isn't that, but nevertheless it offers its own biscuit malt flavours that might offer a mainstream larger convert exactly what they want - and of course, it's GF ππΌ
Overall, as we say, we think it is an everyday beer, but we all need them and for that, we are scoring AM:PM a 3.3/5.
Cheers,
Joey
