"Thank You" doesn't do it just justice, every year I am humbled by each and everyone of you that I get to work with 💯

Huge accomplishments by the team this year, fighting back from injuries, achieving best times, best lifts, pushing your limits, setbacks, UFC contract and victories.

Every step of it has been an honour to be a part of and the growth of my business is all down to you guys.

As a small business it has been my best year yet and is and always will be my passion.

Coaching is a part of who I am and every year the lessons come thick and fast which forces me to develop and be a better asset to you.

Not everyone is aware that my coaching is still something I do outside of a regular day job, 2024 I am going to be pushing even harder to make Coaching a full time profession.

From the bottom of my heart, I truly appreciate everyone I work with past and present and all those that support me in ways not obvious to others.

2023 was incredible, 2024 is going to be even better.

Thank you everyone ❤️

Are you a "fight camp only" thinker?

After all, it is a common approach to training.

The problem is, it is probably stalling of not only your short-term development but even more crucially your long-term development.

An 8 week camp sounds like plenty of time but when you take into account all the factors at play, 8 weeks doesn't sound so plentiful . . .

In this scenario as a coach I may only get 4 weeks of having the athlete feeling well enough and in the condition to train intensely.

How can intensity weeks be lost?

▪︎ 1 week lost
Assessing the athlete.
▪︎ 2 weeks lost
Close to fight, low cal/energy.
▪︎ 1 week lost
Fight week travel & weight cut.

My experienced athletes approach their development differently.

They implement consistent year round S&C programming that allows us to work on long-term athletic development.

It is simply a fact that there are things that take a long time to development which you can build upon from post-fight to pre-fight over and again.

Learn from the best.

Success leaves clues.

In your efforts to attain success in whichever endeavour you choose, there is a requirement to expose yourself to the hardest imperfect conditions.

Your ability to perform in conditions that are extraordinary will set you apart from those who await fair weather.

In the hardest of tests you will have trials of character and in those moments of exhaustion there will be no hiding the character you have built.

There is no perfect time to train . . . there is just time to train.

A Summary - being an MMA Strength & Conditioning Coach

The important message here is that Melissa owes none of what she has achieved to anything but her will to be the best and I owe a great deal to Melissa and James for my foray into working with combat athletes.

I first watched Melissa in her 3rd amateur contest. She was my kids gymnastics coach at the time, so my wife and I went along to see her compete.

We watched as she was on the wrong side of a contentious decision loss (this wouldn't be the last of these). It was clear from the emotion after the fight how important this path was to her and this passion to win and improve will be a theme of this prose.

A few months later I watched from my desk as she competed at the IMMAF Europeans, winning silver in a very close final fight.

As a testament to that desire to improve, 3 days post IMMAF she was looking for the next way to get better and so she contacted me to talk about working together.

I believe Melissa saw that there was potential for her to improve her cardiovascular fitness with a joining of forces.

It was a welcome surprise but a surprise nonetheless as I had not worked with combat athletes before.

Since that day we have been working together as athlete and coach, those early days might have been seen as a bit of a gamble and I'll be honest. It was 😅

The pictures above show snapshots of some of the tough moments along the way but only a small amount of the commitment it takes.

It's a huge privilege to be a part of this but I would never overstate the role an S&C coach plays, I see her for a couple of hours a week.

The countless hours at Lions gym with her team and James, boxing with Brandon, travelling to other gyms, now that is where the champion is made.

Now to summarise the summary.

This history is cool to think back on, from the fjrst day training in the park to lockdowns, training in my conservatory, home gym and then The Fitness Factory. (How you stuck it out through this I don't know but I'm glad you did!)

Melissa you have earnt every moment of that success but there is a hell of a lot more to come.

1-0 in the UFC is just the start of the work 💯

UFC Debut win‼️‼️‼️🇬🇧

We try to imagine how much such a momentous occasion feels for an athlete.

I don't think we ever really get close to knowing.

What we do know is just how thoroughly deserving of this she is.

Melissa, you are a true champion in spirit and ability, enjoy every second of it.

An amazing start to your UFC career . . . this is just the beginning.

One door does not fit all 🚪

The work of an S&C Coach depict.

Athletes invariably vary, some details are similar for many but you have to be able to ensure what you do is right for the individual.

Quite often you start out planning for one thing and end up having to react to another.

Some coaches make their favourite door fit any frame.
