To celebrate INTERNATIONAL WAFFLE DAY today we decided to delve into the history of the waffle. Although this is an extremely shortened version of the waffles long and very extensive history, this may be one for all you history buffs out there to nonetheless enjoy!

The invention of the modern day waffle we know today is difficult to pinpoint given it's roots are so deep. However, waffles can be traced back as far as Ancient Greece! These were flat cakes made of grains and cooked between two metal plates.

Around the 13th century, cooking irons began to be stamped with various designs such as family crests and landscapes. However, it wasn't untill the 15th century that they were made rectangular and started to include a shallow grid pattern.

Over the next few centuries, the waffle became widespread across Europe, being especially popular in the Netherlands, Germany, France and Belgium. The Dutch were particularly fond of waffles and colonists introduced them to America in the early 17th century, it was here that waffles met their perfect companion.... Maple Syrup! 🤗

As the cost of sugar fell, due to the rise of Caribbean sugar plantations, sweet waffles became widely available. At the same time, waffle recipes became more diverse and indulgent, including the addition of ingredients such as citrus fruits, grated chocolate and cream 😋

By the early 18th century waffle recipes became widely known across Europe and America. They were so popular in fact, that pre Revolution, Americans held waffle parties known as 'Waffle Frolics'! ... Now that's our kind of party!

In the mid 19th century the much loved Belgian waffle was created much thicker, with a lighter batter and deeper grids... Allowing them to hold much more jam and cream! 😇
These were introduced to a worldwide audience at the 1962 World's Fair in Seattle, topped with whipped cream, powdered sugar and strawberries.
From then on, waffles became a true craze and to this day remain highly popular across the world!
