Can the phytochemical berberine help to prevent colon cancer?
We know that the risk of colon cancer is related to a person’s diet and resultant gut microbiome, and berberine might favourably influence this. A recent systematic review and meta-analysis located three randomised, controlled clinical trials with 1076 patients. It found that 1-year and 2-year supplementation with berberine was associated with lower recurrence rate of colorectal adenoma (relative risk (RR) of 0.69, p = 0.0001 for 1 year; RR 0.75, p = 0.0004 for 2 years), see https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34509605/

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), is a distressing condition which is frequently misunderstood and maligned, and yet as sufferers of IBS know, it can be debilitating and significantly impact day-to-day life. It is a complex condition to assess accurately, as many of the symptoms overlap with other conditions, such as fibromyalgia.
IBS is a common condition, affecting about 20% of the population, and is characterised by abdominal pain, diarrhoea and or constipation, flatulence, bloating and anxiety. If left unchecked it can lead to nutritional deficiencies, deteriorating emotional health and the potential to underpin the development of other health issues.
In this talk, Helen will sympathetically talk through IBS as a condition – what can be done to help the IBS sufferer through the use of herbs, nutrition and lifestyle aspects. Maybe you have a family member or friend who suffers from IBS and you would like to know more so you can feel better equipped to support them? Come along and find out more.
