🐲 In the Chinese zodiac, the Year of the Dragon is traditionally associated with power, strength, and good fortune. As we approach the next Year of the Dragon in 2024, many people look forward to the unique energy and opportunities that this year may bring.
🎋The dragon is a symbol of authority and success in Chinese culture, and those born in the Year of the Dragon are believed to inherit these traits. The dragon’s influence in 2024 hopes for prosperity and positive changes. The Year of the Dragon is often seen as a time for bold initiatives, innovative thinking, and taking calculated risks. It’s a year that encourages individuals to pursue their ambitions with vigor and determination, making it an ideal time for new beginnings, entrepreneurial ventures, and personal growth.
✨In Chinese astrology, each animal sign is also associated with one of the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, and water), and 2024 is the Year of the Wood Dragon.
🪵The Wood Dragon is believed to bring a harmonious blend of strength and flexibility, fostering growth and stability. As we arrive at the Year of the Dragon in 2024, we can try to embrace the dragon’s legendary characteristics by navigating the year ahead with courage, resilience, and having the potential for great achievements.
🐉The Year of the Dragon is sure to inspire hope and optimism as people embark on new adventures and pursue their dreams!

🧧People in China commonly celebrate the Lunar New Year with red decorations, fireworks and temple visits. Family Reunions are a big part of the Lunar New Year and it is a time for family gatherings. Many people travel long distances to return to their hometowns and reunite with their families. This tradition is known as “chunyun,” or the Spring Festival travel rush, and it is considered the largest annual human migration in the world!

🥟Families come together to enjoy lavish feasts, often featuring traditional dishes that hold symbolic meaning. Foods like fish, dumplings, spring rolls, and niangao (sticky rice cake) are commonly served, each representing good luck, prosperity, and unity.

❤️ Happy Lunar New Year! 🎇

✨ In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), depression is generally understood as a disruption in the flow of Qi (vital energy) and an imbalance of Yin and Yang within the body.

🎋 From a TCM perspective, depression can be caused by a variety of factors, including emotional stress, poor diet, lack of exercise, environmental factors, and constitutional imbalances.

Here are some key patterns in Chinese Medicine that help explain depression:

1. Qi stagnation: In TCM, the free flow of Qi is essential for health, and when Qi becomes stagnant or blocked, it can lead to emotional imbalances such as depression. The Liver is associated with the smooth flow of Qi in the body, and in TCM, emotional stress, frustration and unresolved emotions are often linked to stagnation of liver Qi, impeding the flow of Qi and leading to symptoms of depression.

2. The Spleen and Heart are also important in TCM for mental and emotional well-being. Weakness or imbalances in these organs can lead to symptoms of depression, including fatigue, insomnia, and feelings of sadness or emptiness.

3. Yin-Yang imbalance: TCM emphasises the balance of Yin and Yang within the body. Depression may be seen as an imbalance of these forces, with symptoms arising from excess or deficiency of either Yin or Yang.

💫 From a Five Element perspective each element can provide insight into different aspects of depression, for example the Wood element is linked to the emotion of anger. When the Wood element is imbalanced, it can lead to feelings of frustration and irritability, and a sense of being stuck or constrained. From a spiritual perspective, imbalances in the Wood element can contribute to a lack of vision or direction in life, which can lead to feelings of hopelessness and depression.

Treatment in TCM involves a holistic approach that may include acupuncture and dietary therapy and lifestyle modifications.

🔥 Five Element Acupuncture is a traditional form of acupuncture rooted in ancient Chinese medicine.

🌽 It is based on the concept of five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water) that are believed to exist in the human body and in nature.

⛓ A five element acupuncturist seeks to identify and address imbalances in these elements to restore health and well-being.

🌊 The treatment aims to not only alleviate physical symptoms but also to bring about harmony in the body, mind, and spirit.

🪵 This is done through the use of specific acupuncture points and personalised treatment plans tailored to the individual’s constitutional and emotional needs.

🔥 Moxa, also known as moxibustion, is another method acupuncturists use in Traditional Chinese Medicine that has been used for centuries to treat a wide range of health conditions.

🌱 It involves burning dried mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) near the skin to stimulate specific acupuncture points. The warmth and smoke from the burning herb pe*****te deep into the body, promoting circulation, relieving pain, and balancing the body’s energy flow.

✨ One of the main ways that moxa can help in Chinese Medicine is by stimulating the body’s immune system. Moxa has a warming, tonifying and nourishing effect on the body, which can help to strengthen the immune system and prevent illness.

🩸 By targeting specific acupuncture points, moxa can also help to boost the production of white blood cells, which are vital in fighting off infections and diseases.

💪🏼 Moxa can be used to alleviate pain and inflammation in the body. The heat from the burning mugwort can pe*****te deep into the muscles and joints, promoting blood flow and relaxing tense muscles. This can be especially beneficial for those suffering from chronic pain conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, or back pain. In fact, moxa has been shown to be as effective as acupuncture in relieving pain and improving joint mobility!

💫 In Chinese medicine, good circulation is essential for maintaining overall health and vitality. Moxa can help to stimulate blood flow to the areas where it is applied, promoting the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to cells and tissues. This can have a wide range of benefits, from promoting wound healing to relieving menstrual cramps.

✨ As the Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu said, “the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”

🦶 This to me emphasises the importance of taking small actions to initiate positive changes in our overall well-being. Just like undertaking a long journey, improving our health requires us to start with a small, manageable step – one that can set us on a path of long-term success!

🌿 It’s important to break down your health-related goals into smaller, achievable tasks. Taking that first step can lead to a snowball effect of further positive changes.

💫 This quote reminds us that significant achievements cannot happen overnight; rather, they require consistent effort and perseverance over time.

💪🏼 Just as a thousand-mile journey requires continuing to put one foot in front of the other, maintaining good health necessitates ongoing commitment and dedication to making healthy choices.

✨ In Chinese medicine, pulse taking is essential because it provides valuable insights into the patient’s overall health status and helps the acupuncturist understand any imbalances in their body.

📝 By analysing the quality, rhythm, and characteristics of the pulse, acupuncturists can gather information about the condition of specific organs and meridians and develop a personalised treatment plan.

🌼 It’s clear that anxiety disorders have a significant impact, affecting a considerable portion of the population. Treatment options such as cognitive behavioral therapy and medication exist, but often come with side effects.

Acupuncture has shown promise in treating anxiety disorders, particularly in acute situations and associated conditions.

✨ Research suggests that acupuncture may positively impact anxiety disorders by influencing neurotransmitters and hormones and reversing stress-induced changes.

☯️ While evidence is still evolving, acupuncture could be considered as a complementary therapeutic option due to its low side effects and promising outcomes.

We all want to have a cheerful and bright holiday season and a healthy winter; herbs are one way to support this goal. There is no single herb or single category of herbs for health in winter - many can be supportive at this time of year! The post linked below highlights several herbs for their use in boosting circulation, supporting the immune system, and assisting in emotional support by chasing away winter blues and buffering against holiday stress.

❔Many people ask me how I got into acupuncture...

In 2016 a year after my daughter was born, I decided to train as an EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) practitioner. I was introduced by a friend to EFT in 2013 after the birth of my second son. I had been suffering from anxiety following his birth as sadly my first son George who was born in 2010 died at 3 weeks old after contracting meningitis. EFT was amazing and helped me through some very tough times emotionally. I found it fascinating that the theory behind this relatively new therapy was based on the ancient wisdom of Chinese Medicine and it involved tapping on main acupuncture points to release trauma.

✨This sparked my fascination in Chinese Medicine and how it recognises the effect "stuck" emotions can have on the physical body. After practicing EFT for a while my intention was to study acupuncture when my two children were a bit older.

🤎When I began having acupuncture myself I noticed a profound change in my emotional state and subsequently my physical ailments that clearly had an emotional cause. After some years of counselling for grief, I felt I had talked through everything enough yet acupuncture seemed to shift some trauma I didn’t even know was still there. Witnessing this profound change in myself I couldn't wait to learn more about this incredible system of medicine.

🌸In 2019 I completed my cosmetic acupuncture training and the following year I began and subsequently completed my 3 year degree in acupuncture which brings me to where I am today.

🎓I am now a fully qualified and insured acupuncturist practicing integrated TCM and Five Element acupuncture. I studied at The College of Integrated Chinese Medicine in Reading where I gained a First Class Honours degree and a LicAc (License to practice acupuncture). I am a member of The British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) and The Association of Acupuncture Clinicians (AAC).

🧡I love seeing how acupuncture can help people regain their emotional and physical health and enable them to live their lives to their full potential.

🧠Just finished the most inspiring Mental Health lesson, learning about all the different mental health disorders, talking about the mind, the spirit, physiology and the different aetiologies.

It was so fascinating and so relevant.

The best bit is acupuncture can help, massively, it can work alongside medication if necessary and will help with side effects and even help the patient to reduce the dosage of medication (under GP guidance) or even stop completely depending on the condition.

This was more of a conventional medicine lecture, we have the second part that focuses on the Chinese Medicine perspective and differentiations, so I will do another post to go into that in a bit more detail ✨🌸☯️

👀Did you know that those bags and dark circles under your eyes are a result of your Kidney energy being depleted, this happens through overwork, excessive physical work, excessive sexual activity and chronic stress amongst other things.

Some of the other signs your Kidneys may be in need of some support is an aching lower back, weak knees, tinnitus, anxiety and tiredness.

😁The good news is acupuncture along with diet and lifestyle recommendations can help with all of the above, get your Kidney health back on track and banish those bags✨🌸
