Smartphone addiction involves the excessive use of a mobile phone device. This behavioural dependancy is commonly referred to as "Nomophobia", indicating the fear of being without a smartphone.
There are 3.8 billion smartphone users world wide! ๐คฏ
I'm asking because, sleep ๐ด is super important to my mental health. The blue light from mobile phones fools the brain into thinking it's daytime. When that happens, the body stops releasing a sleep hormone called melatonin. Melatonin is nature's way of helping us wind down and prepare for bed.
Something I'm heavily focused upon currently, below are notes I made to change my own habit in December 2023.

Habits ๐๏ธ ๐งโโ๏ธ
As we enter the second week of January next week, I wanted to share some thoughts that repeatedly go around my mind on habits.
Are you thinking about changing some of your daily habits for a healthier 2024?
Iโm asking because, in the past Iโve had some bad habits. Eating chocolate, eating pringles (the whole tube in one in go! Yes, one go). Drinking acidic drinks like orange juice, dilute juice & fizzy pop ๐ฅค.
I learned to stop focusing on bad habits and to REPLACE them instead!
Focusing on stopping a bad habit, often makes you rebound and do it more, we are action orientated creatures.
The more you supress your thoughts, the more likely you are going to think about those bad habits. Ultimately returning to the bad habit. This reminds me of my experience below ๐.
I visited the dentist some years back and they asked me about my acidic drinking habits. My enamel started to wear down. I removed all fruit juices, pop & dilute juices and replaced with just water and a slice of lemon. This still gave me some taste and dramatically reduced the risk to my teeth.
โEnamel is the strong outer layer that protects your teeth. Acidic drinks can wear enamel down, weakening it and causing long-term tooth erosion. It's essential to care for your teeth because tooth erosion is permanent. Enamel isn't a living cell and doesn't naturally repair itself as your skin doesโ.
I focused on the behaviour I wanted to change. Forming a new habit takes time.
Will power to stop is not enough, it will exhaust as the day goes on to just cut out everything.
Donโt focus on stopping all bad habits at the same time. Keep it simple and focus on ONE bad habit at a time.
Give yourself a better reason why to change your bad habits. The habit is always going to be there. A reason thatโs genuinely & personally important to you!
My reason for changing my reduction of non-acidic drinks was my SMILE ๐. My teeth mean an infectious smile and gives me confidence. To lose my teeth in the long term would massively impact my mental health and confidence.
Something I heard in in the past which stuck with me until this day ๐.
โChange happens when the pain of staying the same, becomes greater than the pain of making a changeโ.
This makes me think about my father passing in 2021 and drives me to change habits. Your health is everything and changing my drinking habits is one small step for longer healthier future.

Are you setting new years resolutions?
Iโm asking because, I usually set goals to put my health first. Stop drinking alcohol, get in shape for summer.
Trying to form a new habit in my life can be tough. There are numerous ways of forming a new habit, reach out to google and youโre overwhelmed by what you find.
In the past I set a personal goals for new year to stop drinking alcohol for the month of January only to break it mid-month. Join a gym, only to go once per week to never go from March onwards.
Setting mini goals that are realistic are a priority any time of the year. Spending two hours walking per week, only have a drink on a Saturday night.
Author of Atomic Habits โ James Clear, helped me gain perspective. I highly recommend reading this book, it may change your life!
James Clear - โIncredibly, if you can get 1% better every day for a year, you'll end up 37 times better by the time the year is up. A slight change in your daily habits can guide your life to a very different destinationโ.
Thereโs no greater form of self-love than taking care of your mental and physical health.
I try not to put a measure in the form of steps whilst walking but in instead measure my exercise in time, plan where in my week this will happen. Walking gives me levels of โfeel goodโ chemicals in my brain. I find this a great way of self-meditation to be alone with my thoughts and be away from screens.

A Merry Festive ANNOUNCEMENT ๐ข ๐

As I reflect over 2023, qualifying as a Practitioner/Master Practitioner in Clincal Hypnotherapy, NLP & Life Coaching and setting up my own Clinic is probably the most successful year of my life.
Prior to 2022 however was the most challenging time Iโve ever experienced. From losing my father in January 2021 to increased anxiety and grief.
I wanted to share a brief story Iโve never shared before in public...
I never thought about losing a parent until the news of stage 4 terminal cancer hit me in the short years prior to his passing in January 2021. I thought my parents were invincible. Watching a man who had a successful career as a people leader in Human Resources for a well-known company, to slowly face a challenging health situation and then see him take his last breaths made me question my own mortality & purpose. I never had a purpose in life other than living up to what society thought me to strive to achieve, marriage, children, car, house, and a well-paid job.
Experiencing sadness, anger, guilt, fatigue, self-isolation during the pandemic and poor sleep hygiene are to name a few symptoms I experienced during the cancer diagnosis, and post passing of my dad which drained me to breaking point.
His passing thought me to cherish other loved ones around me and to cherish friendships. I wanted to learn more about mental health and try and deal with the grief of the tragic news my dad will no longer be with me in the years that follow.
I had no qualifications other than passing my driving test, mentor, or plan for my mental health or future.
* Why am I here?
* Whatโs my purpose?
* What does the future look like for me?
* Can I carry on living the way I am?
* Am I happy? (How often do we ask ourselves that question)
All questions I never allowed myself to reflect upon.
Cherishing my mum & family was and still is the top of my priority list, spending as much time as I can in their loving company. I never know when that time may come to an end. Love you, Mum! I know you will read this.
It takes courage to show vulnerability, emotional risk, and potential judgement, it also sets us free!
Knowing what I now know, having learned so much from my training with Hayley J Austin for my own growth and future, Iโm forever grateful ๐. Iโm now on a path to help others in their own personal challenges, I truly believe we can all get through anything life hits our way. Its the courage to ask for help when we may need it the most ๐ฆธโโ๏ธ๐ฆธโโ๏ธ.
As I look forward to 2024, January can be one of the most mentally challenging months of the year. Post-holiday blues, winter weather affecting mood, and the pressure of New Yearโs resolutions, creating a sense of expectation and potential stress. You are not alone.

WHY SLEEP IS IMPORTANT!!!
1. Reduces risk of Brain Disease & Heart Disease.
2. Keeps you looking and feeling young.
3. Fortifies your immune system.
4. Balances hormones.
5. Boost metabolism.
6. Improves physical energy.
7. Improves brain function.

Did you know??
Your Glymphatic system removes toxins from your Brain when you're asleep, by removing and recycling dead cells, this can be up to ten times when you're asleep.
What can you do to have a better nightโs sleep
1. Getting daily sunlight.
2. Avoid smart screens, at least 2 hours before going to bed. The blue light that these emit, stops your sleep, and produces cortisol. (Stress Hormone)
3. Remove Smart Devices from your bedroom when going to sleep, these will distract you and keep you awake.
4. Caffeine, think carefully about your intake daily after 12pm, one cup of coffee can stay in your system for 12 hours.
5. Optimal Room Temperature: 20 Degrees, any higher or lower than this temperature will prevent a peaceful nights sleep!
6. Fall asleep with the sounds of running water. This will help slow your breathing rate.
7. English Ivy & Perennial Snake Plants in your bedroom, these absorb Carbon Dioxide and replaces with Oxygen.
8. Blackout blinds & curtains are necessary in the bedroom. Your skin has receptors that can pick up light and send messages to your brain to wake you up from sleep.
8. Replace artificial light in the bedroom with red light. An example of this would be candles or a pink rock salt lamp.
9. Choose morning workouts instead of evening workouts. When you work out in an evening your body temperature rises, which then can take a number of hours to reduce, thus preventing you from sleeping.
10. Time your sleep schedule well and try to achieve 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night.
