An update ๐
Sometimes life is tough and throws you a curve ball. You can never be fully prepared for those days.
The last couple of weeks have been hard, mentally and physically. However, I do believe that things happen for a reason and in many ways, I was blessed that events unfolded in the way they did. Someone was looking over me.
I was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism. I had no symptoms and still have a number of tests to go in an attempt to get to the bottom of what happened and get me back out on the roads.
You might have noticed that things have gone quiet on the social media front too. The focus has shifted and my eyes are now firmly fixed on the road to recovery and full health ๐๐๐ผโโ๏ธ
In the absence of my own training, Iโm still doing what I love. Everyday I get the opportunity to help others reach their goals, and thatโs very special ๐ซ
Hi everyone ๐๐ผ
A little update: Yesterday morning in Donegal I went out for a run with Ciara. I collapsed, took a seizure and lost consciousness.
Thankfully, we had just come off the beach and there were plenty of people around (including Ciara) to help as well as nurses and paramedics.
The ambulance came and I was brought to Letterkenny Hospital for a CT scan, cardiology tests and other checks. Theyโre keeping me here for a few days to do more scans and some testing on my heart.
Take care everyone. Health is wealth โ๏ธ
Mark OโBrien (left) with a sweet PB (1:46:18) in this mornings Clontarf Half Marathon
PBs donโt come easy on windy days. Cracking job Mark ๐ช๐คฉ
Thank you, Orlagh! ๐
TRAINING UPDATE ๐
After a couple of days of sickness, Iโve been focusing on getting out for some easy miles, listening to my body and limiting the intensity.
Never be a slave to whatโs written on your training plan for the day/week. Listen to your body (and your coach!) and prioritise your health over fitness. Your body will not adapt to intense sessions as it recovers from sickness or fatigue.
Thatโs why we always say โThe best training plans are ALWAYS written in pencilโ โ๏ธ
Step by step for the ๐ runners breakfast ๐ค
I have this every day, sometimes twice. I change up the protein powder flavour to keep things fresh.
The vegan protein by mixes perfectly
Can be made in exactly the same way and added to Tupperware for overnight oats. If Iโm doing this, I make it slightly less thick and donโt add Greek yogurt until Iโm ready to eat.
Enjoy! ๐
Matthewโs been around since day 1. After a break during covid and starting a family, he ran a 30 minute marathon PB ๐ค Always a pleasure to work with you!
Thank you Meaghan!
I have to be honest, it felt a bit odd asking my clients and friends to write about their coaching experience, just so I could pop a few testimonials up on social media. A touch of imposter syndrome definitely kicked in but there you have it.
Iโm beyond grateful to those people that allow me to do what I love every single day. It can be a strange feeling when โworkโ starts to become something youโre genuinely excited about.
Thank you for this one, Graham โ๏ธ

๐๐ฅ CORK MARATHON ๐ฅ๐
A sizzling hot day this Sunday in Cork saw Dermot Kelly storm the marathon in 3:46:16 for a new PB.
Calf issues starting mile 6 and 21 degree heat werenโt enough to stop this man getting the job done ๐
Well done Dermot!
๐๐ปโโ๏ธโก๏ธNEWRY HALF โก๏ธ๐๐ปโโ๏ธ
1:36:05 for Christine Nugent at Newry Half Marathon last weekend as she returns to racing ๐
Christine is a talented athlete, and another lady balancing a busy life. She will be out running some seriously swift times in the coming months ๐๐จ
Well done Christine. Proud coach! โ๏ธ

Another outstanding result from last weekends Edinburgh marathon was Michael Wheavilโs 4:20. Having broken 4 hours just last month in London, the goal of this one was to simply enjoy the experience ๐
Well done Michael! Time for a rest ๐ฅฑ๐ฅฑ
๐ฆ๐ฆ๐บ SYDNEY HALF ๐ฆ๐บ๐ฆ
Michaela Doyle stormed home in the Sydney half last weekend in a swift 1:39:31 in her first half marathon.
Michaela is currently on her travels but is training away, using her running to explore new places ๐๐
Well done Michaela!

Mรฉabh Carlin was also in action. 2:03:13 for the half marathon in the trendy London borough.
Mรฉabh managed to raise vital funds for .org.uk, a charity committed to working with women who have survived trafficking and sexual exploitation ๐
Well done Mรฉabh!

MICHAEL - 3:17:20 (PB)
A gent who shares the same passion for endurance and sport that I do, our conversations are one of the reasons I love to coach: you meet like minded people.
Michael balances a busy job, a young family and his training like a master magician spinning plates, and is no stranger to the 5am club. Itโs pretty simple, the training either gets done, or it doesnโt.
Proud coach โ๏ธ

SCARLETT - Relay
Scarlett contacted me in February with the goal of running a leg in the relay of the Belfast City Marathon. Like many, Scarlett did some running during lockdown, but with a lack of structure and poor load management, picked up a stress fracture and didnโt make the progress she wanted.
After the recent birth of her son, Scarlett wanted to get back into some running. She smashed her leg at Belfast and felt โcomfortableโ. So comfortable, she will be running the Newry 10km later this month ๐

MATTHEW - 4:23:31
Another outstanding run - This time from Matthew Trouton, running a 30 minute PB after a 3 year running hiatus ๐ฎ I have a lot to thank Matthew for as he was the first athlete I had the opportunity to coach. If it wasnโt for a conversation with this gent, I might not be doing what I love.
Excited to see whatโs next for you Matthew! ๐๐ป

SEAN - 3:42:40
For me, this has to be the pick of last weekends results. A 36 minute improvement on last years Belfast Marathon for Sean. This result doesnโt surprise me, Despite a hectic work schedule and busy lifestyle, Sean is always hungry to squeeze every last ounce out himself and improve every time he gets on the start line ๐
๐ข๐ Belfast Marathon 2023 ๐๐ข
ALICE - 3:56:02
A 22 minute improvement on last years Belfast marathon for Alice. One of the most consistent athletes I have the pleasure of coaching. This lady knows how to commit to a goal and get to work!
Well done Alice ๐

EAMONN 3:52:39
A strong run by Eamonn again this year, comfortably breaking 4 hours and running a 14 minute personal best. A man who just gets it done day after day, always with a smile! Proud coach โ๏ธ
23rd in the world for Graham Taylor in his age category at the world Duathlon Championships in Ibiza last week ๐ช๐ธ
First time in an international kit and this man is only going to get better. An exciting few months in store as we prepare for even bigger things! ๐
If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.
Good luck to all my friends running the Belfast marathon this weekend โ๏ธ
Catherine Farley 4:07:19 at the London Marathon ๐๐ผโโ๏ธ๐ฅ
A special mention must go to Catherine, who balances her training on top of a busy family and work schedule ๐ฉโ๐ผ๐
Forget the elites, itโs athletes like Catherine that inspire me the most! ๐ Well done!!
With the target of running under 4 hours, smashed the barrier by almost 10 minutes with a 3:50:56 in Sundays London Marathon ๐ฏ๐
There is no better feeling than setting yourself a goal and seeing it through. Well done Michael! ๐
๐๐ PB Sunday ๐๐
2:54:20 for at Sundays Manchester marathon. Delighted for Stuart as he gets another quality marathon under his belt.
Time to take things up a notch and take a big chunk off that time in the months to come ๐๐
WORLD CHAMPS BOUND ๐๐ช๐ธ
A cracking result from long term athlete, Graham Taylor at the weekend in the Brahman Park Duathlon finishing 18th in a competitive field.
Itโs pretty hard to believe, but Graham started his journey in running and triathlon during lockdown in March 2020. Heโs come a long way since, and is showing no sign of stopping ๐ช
Next stop, Ibiza for the World Duathlon championships (30th April), where Graham will be representing Great Britain! Proud coach โ๏ธ
On a personal note, a PB of 70:43 was a nice cap on a good winters training ๐
My sights are now firmly set on breaking that elusive 70 minute half marathon barrier!
Winter miles, summer smiles ๐
Shoutout to AS coaching athletes (1:29:49), Stuart Bell (1:23:03) and Catherine Farley (1:50:49) who all ran cracking times in Sundays Omagh half marathon.
Off the back her recent cross country success with St Peters AC and a swift time at Queens 5k (18:13 - PB) last week, Orlagh used Omagh as a training run, ahead of more spring racing ๐
Stuart and Catherine are both in full preparation for Manchester and London Marathons next month, and training is looking ๐๐
Well done all! Proud coach โ๏ธ๐
Yesterday, in Barcelona Mรฉabh Carlin ran her first marathon in an incredible 4:31:44.
Whatโs even more impressive: In 2011 Mรฉabh spent two years in a wheelchair following a hit and run incident in the same country.
On her way, Mรฉabh has raised ยฃ3000 for Tribe, a foundation fighting to end modern slavery and human trafficking.
Hereโs what she said about the race: โI was super conscious of starting out slower. So kept a close eye on my pace and paid attention to how I felt. I kept thinking about you advising me to hold back. Once I felt a bit warmed up I kept going by feel but was a bit more conscious of my cadence. I started getting sore on mile 19-20. But only hit a big mental wall in the last mile and a half. The whole way felt so good and I felt super relaxed. I took my first gel 25 mins in and paced it for every half hourish. But I also took electrolyte drinks and water at the rest stops which were every 5k. I walked through two of them. Had a couple of bites of banana and orange too as a few women were passing out in the heat. The finish line was epic and very emotional! Itโs amazing what your body can do with the right coaching!โ
If youโve got this far, thanks for reading! Mรฉabhโs next race is the Hackney Half Marathon in London ๐๐ปโโ๏ธ
Well done Mรฉabh, proud coach! โ๏ธ
