Everyone can get a bit of wax build up from time to time. As long as it doesn't get so bad that it affects your hearing and completely blocks the ear drum. To help prevent this get booked in or just to get your ears checked over.

NICE advises healthcare professionals to use either the ear irrigation method or microsuction method. These methods have replaced an older technique known as manual ear syringing, where a syringe manually pumps water into the ear. According to NICE, ear syringing is potentially harmful and should not be used.

This is why I use only microsuction as it is the new gold standard for removing wax from the ears. It is safe, fast and effective.

It is a popular misconception that using ear buds/cotton buds are good at getting wax out of the ear when infact using them can often cause more harm than good.

You should not put anything at all in the ears and yes, this includes hairpins, tweezers, straws, paper clips, pens, pencils and every other inanimate object that you could possibly contemplate using to clean your ears.

Another foreign object found inside a clients ear...this time the end of a cotton bud. His daughter contacted me saying he was struggling to hear her when she spoke to him at a normal volume 🗣. This was removed on a 2nd visit and will require a 3rd to remove a large amount of hard wax that had built up or that had been stuck behind the end of the cotton bud with no where to go. With a week of olive oil treatment I should be able to microsuction the wax out and he should be hearing like a baby again. When removed he exclaimed "where did that come from and how did it get in there", 🤣🤣🤣. His daughter has since removed all cotton buds from his house to prevent this happening again. If your parents or grandparents re struggling to hear don't just assume it is due to age if could be wax or a foreign object that has been stuck down there for years 😆
