An absolute highlight of one of my trips to Mumbai was meeting .chopra at the headquarters. Ever since reading the rumours of closure, l’ve been in denial that this was happening. To see this becoming a reality breaks my heart and yet I’m full of optimism for what is to come. Thank you Anupama for creating a space for film enthusiasts like we’d never seen before, for making our individual love for particularly Hindi cinema find a safe space to flourish, for giving us the context we need to understand the industry so much better. Thank you for the companionship and I can’t wait to see everything you do next ❤️🫡🙌🏽

Also for just being the classy, dignified person that you are and for never letting your standards drop just because others wanted to get into a mud-slinging match. It’s what makes you the inspiration that you are.

It’s which means it’s 10 years of . Still remember the day they came to for their first UK studio interview - all wide eyed and bushy tailed - overwhelmed by all the new found fame and attention. There’s something special about watching someone’s journey right from the start all the way to superstardom success. All three as humble as ever, even today.

Day four of diaries. This time we’re in Dubai. It’s March 2016 and and I have been sent to TOIFA Awards to record content for BBC Asian Network]. It’s always a risk when you go on these international trips. You don’t know what you will come back and who will stay true to their word and give you the interviews you need. Sometimes it’s a scramble with lots of outlets competing to get time with just a handful of names. And none of them are bigger than Shah Rukh Khan so you know everyone will want a piece of him. But if there’s one thing you should know about King Khan, it’s that he is a man of his word - and his team live by that same philosophy - so if his team tell you that you’ve got guaranteed time with him, then they will make it happen. was that person here. We’d forgone a spot with him on the red carpet the night before because of this scheduled interview the day after but even as we arrived at the hotel there was a part of us that panicked in uncertainty that it wouldn’t happen. Plus, time was against us. We had to be wrapped up by 6pm and the clock was ticking… 3pm… 4pm… 5pm. I went to Mandvi and explained the situation we were in. It was our last day in Dubai. We had to leave by 6 but we couldn’t leave without some face time with Shah Rukh. She understood immediately and within a few minutes, the doors opened… and quite honestly, you feel the aura of SRK before you see him. That’s exactly what happened here. The rest of this meeting is a bit of a blur. What I do remember is that he was a great sport and because it was around the time Jabra Fan had been released in multiple languages, I asked him to sing an English version with me - he was all game for it. He just gets it. He’s fun, he’s creative, he’s collaborative. He doesn’t even mind being told to do a retake - that’s a story for another time. When you leave from having had any interaction with him, you leave having left all your troubles behind - that’s the affect he has on people. Day three of a trip down memory lane. We’re in December 2015 now and in between the last photo and this one, we’ve met another few times - in London for Happy New Year and the SLAM tour, and in Mumbai for the launch of Gerua - which means by now, he knows me by name and face (yes, it still feels strange to say!). Also, I’ve been promoted to Entertainment Reporter, meaning I get to interview him myself, plus he’s coming with Kajol - so there’s double excitement… but also double pressure. This morning was a whirlwind - I remember I was interviewing them for several BBC outlets and I had to tick lots of boxes - mainstream enough for BBC News, in language for BBC Urdu and Hindi - and then something fun for the Asian Network. That final bit is where we bonded most - I made them watch back my favourite songs of theirs - Baazigar, Karan Arjun, DDLJ, KKHH, K3G. It was a blast! Both their faces lit up at reliving those moments - he went from being a superstar to just a simple shy guy having a laugh with his best friend - getting embarrassing, cracking jokes - and for those five minutes, he let me be part of that world. I also told him I was only 2 when Baazigar released and could easily play their grown up son in a movie if they ever needed one! Day two of sharing some memories of meeting over the years as we gear up for and I counting down his top 30 tracks this Saturday on . This one is from around August 2013, when SRK and Deepika Padukone came to London to promote Chennai Express. There was disbelief in our office that he was going to come in to do this interview because Shah Rukh is famously not a morning person and this was a studio interview at 9am. Low and behold, he was there - bright and early and alert as ever. I was an Assistant Producer on the Breakfast Show at the time and it was my job to visualise the whole thing - film it, record it, edit it, the works. We got SRK and Deepika to dance to 1, 2, 3, 4 Get On The Dancefloor, played fun games with them - it was amazing! Until… at the end of the live broadcast, at 10am, I looked at our recording system and it was no longer recording. “Who stopped the recording?” I said - while SRK and Deepika still sat there - their heads turning to look at me and the horror on my face. SRK’s face spoke a thousand words in that moment - there was not a glimpse of stardom or arrogance that we might have just got him to do all this fun stuff for nothing, but rather so much empathy that he knew I could be in a lot of trouble if this content hadn’t been recorded. Not once did he or make me feel bad about it - that says a lot about them as superstars. This photo was taken moments after. It turns out the SD card used that day was faulty, the interview had recorded but stopped midway and the file appeared corrupted when scanned on the computer - a technical glitch that no one could have prevented. The footage never saw the light of day. I do however have the footage from directly after, when I hit the record button again and it captures SRK and Deepika’s reaction… maybe I’ll release that some day. ❤️

Exactly 10 years ago today, I met for the first time properly. He came to to celebrate 20 years of his career with his very own radio show. It was a surreal experience. Like all my childhood dreams had come true… to spend an entire evening in the company of an absolute legend, my childhood hero. I was an intern, but he spoke to me like I was the most important person in the room. He did that with every person he spoke to. Since then, this man has been nothing but kind, humble and giving to me every time we’ve met. I can’t wait to celebrate another decade in his career, this coming Saturday, as and I countdown his best 30 songs, as voted for by you! And I think I’ll continue to share some photos from memory lane over the next few days…
