๐Ÿพ The Most Common Mistakes When Dealing with Boxer Puppy Biting

Having a hard time with your Boxer pup's biting? It's normal, but there are some common mistakes that can make it a right pain. Let's sort it out.

๐Ÿ›‘ Mistake 1: Shouting or Pushing the Puppy Away
Contrary to popular belief, shouting "No!" or pushing your pup away isn't solving the issueโ€”it's likely making it worse. This can even become a game for your pup, making the biting worse.

๐Ÿ›‘ Mistake 2: Using Inappropriate Toys
Small toys can be a choking hazard and increase the risk of your hand getting bitten. Go for longer, soft toys that are easy for your pup to grab, especially if you've got kids about.

๐Ÿ›‘ Mistake 3: Forgetting About Teething
Teething makes the biting worse. Remember, your pup's not being naughty - their gums just hurt. Natural chews like bully sticks, antlers, or even frozen carrots can help.

๐Ÿ›‘ Mistake 4: Inconsistent Training
Make sure everyone at home is doing the same thing. If you're all giving different messages, it'll confuse your pup and mess up the training.

โœ… The Fix: Positive Management
1๏ธโƒฃ Positive Reinforcement - give treats for good behaviour.
2๏ธโƒฃ Use longer toys for safer playtime.
3๏ธโƒฃ Try different chews like bully sticks, Himalayan Yak Milk or frozen carrots.
4๏ธโƒฃ Energy Management: If your pup turns into a "shark," it's likely they are overtired. Use a chew toy or licking mat to help them settle down.
5๏ธโƒฃ Redirect: Keep some tasty treats handy to redirect them quickly.

Remember, puppy biting doesn't last forever. But if you don't sort it out, especially during play or when they want attention, it could turn into a proper problem later on. Stick with it and build a good bond with your Boxer pup for a happy life together.

Thank you for a lovely testimonial Jo ๐Ÿ™‚
โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ
"I joined the training club a month or so before our puppy joined our family. When we brought him home we started working our way through the Baby Boxer course.

He's now 6 months old and amazingly we can take him to cafes/pubs and he will settle whilst we eat! And he's doing so well with loose lead walking. I'm sure we would never have been able to achieve this without the Training Club.

Most importantly, he LOVES his fun training sessions! He always looks disappointed when I give him the 'finished' cue ๐Ÿ˜†.

Also, the Training Club Facebook group is a very supportive community.

I honestly believe that joining the Training Club is the best thing we could have done for our boxer pup."

โš ๏ธ In the current hot weather ๐Ÿฅต, it's crucial to keep your Boxers safe and comfortable! โš ๏ธ

๐Ÿพ Check if the ground is too hot for your dog's paws.
โ›” Avoid walking your dog in direct sunlight. Opt for early morning or late evening walks instead.
๐Ÿ’ฆ Ensure your dog has constant access to fresh water at all times to keep them hydrated.
โ„๏ธ Consider using cooling equipment, such as a cooling vest or mat, to help your dog stay cool during the heat.
๐Ÿก Think about cutting outdoor walks short and instead opt for indoor enrichment activities or training sessions to keep your Boxer mentally stimulated.

๐Ÿ† Our July Boxer of the Month award goes to Evie and her brilliant owner Debbie! ๐Ÿ†

At Bombproof Boxer Training Club, we love seeing our members visit new places and try training in different environments with their dogs. That's what real progress looks like!

This month, Evie and Debbie have shown us exactly that, and more! ๐Ÿ’ช

When Debbie first joined our club, Evie was a bit scared of the world. Walks were tough - she'd hide from cars, stare at people and other dogs, and didn't really listen to Debbie. Going to the vet was so scary that Evie needed to be sedated just to be checked. She wasn't even that keen on treats or toys, which made training really hard.

But look at them now! Debbie has worked so hard to understand Evie and help her feel braver. They've been training loads and trying new things, and now:

Evie is much braver: She can now go to busy places like shops and even visited a pub for the first time - a huge win!

She pays more attention: Evie listens to Debbie much better now, even when there's lots going on around her.

They're having fun outings: They're trying new things like training in parks and handling surprises on walks.

Vet visits are better: Evie recently went to the vet without needing to be sedated - she let the vet check her and everything!

She's less bothered by distractions: Evie doesn't react as much to things like cats and other dogs now. If something does upset her, she calms down quicker.

She's learning new tricks: From going under benches to playing with new toys, Evie's learning all sorts.

Debbie understands Evie better: Most importantly, Debbie can now read Evie's body language and understand her needs much better, allowing her to help Evie in the best way possible.

What's really great is how Debbie takes their training out into the real world. By carefully introducing Evie to new places and situations, they're making sure Evie can use her new skills anywhere.

Debbie, you've done an amazing job with Evie. You've shown that with patience and the right help, any dog can improve. Your story shows how understanding our Boxers and being kind to them can lead to brilliant results. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

Well done to Evie and Debbie for being our July Boxer of the Month! You're an inspiration to everyone in the club. Keep up the great work - we can't wait to see what you do next! โค๏ธ

Is your Boxer stubborn?

Does your Boxer ignore commands or put breaks and refuse to move?

Reason 1: Your Boxer might not understand what you want him to do.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Every behaviour should be practiced many times in lots of different locations so the dog can generalise.

Reason 2: Your Boxer might be in too high arousal state and struggle to listen.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Practice impulse control and thinking in arousal games

Reason 3: The environment is too overwhelming for your Boxer.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Remove your dog from the uncomfortable place

Reason 4: Injury or health issue.

๐Ÿ‘‰ It might be that your Boxer can't sit or lie down because he experiences pain in this position.

Your Boxer does his best with the information he gets and the situation he is in

He isn't stubborn BUT:
โ€ข under pressure
โ€ข too distracted
โ€ข doesn't understand what you want
โ€ข not feeling well
โ€ข your rewards are not reinforcing
โ€ข emotionallyย uncomfortable

Ever packed your pup's treat pouch like a mini buffet?

Kibble, cheese, hotdog bits - the works! You're all set for an epic walk, but then... your Boxer seems to lose interest faster than you can say "sit". What gives?

Here's why: when you mix all those yummy treats together, they start to smell the same to your dog's super-nose.

It's like accidentally blending all the colors of Play-Doh - suddenly, everything's just... meh.

But don't worry, we've got your back (and your dog's snack game)!

๐Ÿ† Our Boxer of the Month June award goes to Roxy! ๐Ÿ†

The Boxer of the Month award is designed to recognize and praise a training club member who has made significant improvements in training their Boxer, overcome a specific challenge, and is actively striving to reach their training goals.

Every month, many Boxers achieve great progress, making it difficult to choose just one. Thus, when we announce the winner, it becomes an emotional moment for the Boxer owner. These individuals understand the importance of training, care deeply about the mental wellbeing of their dogs, and quite rightly feel proud when they are a step closer to their goals.

Roxy's mom is definitely one of those dedicated individuals! Thanks to her efforts, Roxy has been doing amazingly over the last few weeks: growing in confidence, walking nicely on a lead, becoming much less reactive to other dogs, and staying more focused on her guardian. Because of all these improvements, she now gets to visit new places, explore, and be a part of family summer outings. ๐ŸŒป๐Ÿพ

In one of her posts, Susan, Roxy's owner, said: "Iโ€™ve seen a big improvement in getting her to refocus on me when passing other dogs this week. Usually, her fur hawk is up and sheโ€™s growling, pulling, and barking. But yesterday, for example, we passed about six dogs on our walkโ€”she only reacted to one, which was an off-lead border collie. She disengaged nicely for the rest and took food from me, which she never used to." ๐ŸŒŸ

Susan, you are doing an amazing job! The entire Bombproof Boxer community is proud of you and Roxy! ๐ŸŽ‰

Another lovely review of our Bombproof Boxer Training Club
Thank you, Sarah ๐Ÿ˜€
"I joined the club from the beginning when my puppy was just a couple of months old.

Adolescence was the most difficult time for me and with Justyna's guidance and support me and my dog have worked together to build our relationship and resolve some unwanted behaviours.

Walking my dog is so much more enjoyable and training no longer feels like training as it just fits into our daily routine. Thank you for all your help."

Do you know how to recognise when your Boxer might be in pain?

Here is a slide from our Dogs Body Language course where we teach club members to understand their and other dogs around.

Knowing when dogs feel uncomfortable, scared or overwhelmed can prevent aggression or escalation in any behavioural issues.
When dogs know we understand what they are 'saying' they trust us more which create mutual understanding and trust.

Every responsible dog owner should learn about dogs body language.

Full course and ton of training materials can be found in Bombproof Boxer Training Club :)

Grateful for another wonderful feedback about our Bombproof Boxer Training Club. A big thanks to Linda for her kind words ๐Ÿ˜Š.
โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ
"I joined the club after taking on a 3 year old rescue. To say he's challenging is an understatement, not his fault, just a typical bouncy bundle of fun, but he has had zero socialising and training till he came to me. I'm his third owner. I nearly gave up before giving him a chance as he's extremely strong, pulls like a steam train, reactive to everything and didn't listen. The club and it's members gives me the advice and support, not to mention all the training videos, which I can access 24/7, that gives me the confidence to help Bailey become a calmer, more sociable Boxer. I also love that I can upload my training videos for all the members to see, so I can get their feedback. Bailey and I have a long way to go, he challenges me everyday, and probably always will, but since joining the club, I know I'm not alone on this journey. I can't recommend the club enough, it's like one big family, the training is fun, interesting and rewarding." - Linda McCulloch

Have you ever felt like giving up? I have very recently. You might think dog trainers don't have those thoughts... Well, we are human too.

When I got Khaleesi, the plan was to train for KC Obedience. I knew very little about the sport, so we were learning together. When she was one, we moved to Spain. Here, we have FC Obedience, which is quite different from what we've been learning in the UK. While I don't mind learning new things, there are no local trainers, and driving 5-6 hours to Madrid regularly was not an option.
A few months ago, I decided to join a local Mondioring club and train with Khaleesi in a sport called ODM. Again, this was very new for both of us.

Recently, I nearly gave up. With the new foster, lots of work scheduled, many trips abroad, and life being overwhelming in general, I lost motivation. We skipped weeks of training. But I started feeling bad about the situation. Giving up isn't me. Khaleesi is such a clever girl who loves learning and training. Competing in a sport with her was always my goal. So we are back! And we are enjoying it :)

The reason I'm sharing this is that I often see on social media, or sometimes hear from my clients, that they have tried everything and are close to giving up. Usually, it's the owners of reactive Boxers who feel like failures. Life gets in the way, accidents happen, and bad moments crush hope and motivation. I get that!

But if I had given up on Mia years ago, she would probably have bitten someone, been a dangerous dog to be around, and probably put to sleep. Instead, she is the sweetest girl ever, no longer struggling with reactivity. If I had given up on Nella's traffic anxiety and lead pulling, I would now have lots of shoulder and back injuries plus a very anxious dog that hates being walked. Instead, she is confident and loves all our adventures.

I have six dogs, so I'll stop with the examples here; otherwise, I could write a book.

I think by now you get the point. The thing is, over the years, I've seen so many amazing transformations that I know everything is possible... unless you give up. Taking a break to recharge physically, emotionally, or both is a good call. But never ever give up!

12/06/2024

Bringing home a Boxer puppy is beyond exciting, but it's also a journey that requires patience, understanding, and the right approach. ๐Ÿถ These adorable bundles of energy need guidance to grow into well-adjusted pups. So, let me share some tips that will help you navigate those early days with your new companion.

First up, puppies sleep like little logs - we're talking 18-20 hours a day! ๐Ÿ˜ด Make sure you have a cozy, quiet spot for them to recharge their batteries. And when they're awake, those little jaws will be working overtime as they teethe. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ Be ready with plenty of appropriate chew toys to save your furniture!

Mouthing is also their way of exploring the world, so don't get too frustrated. Just redirect that nipping to something they can chomp on. And keep an eye out for signs of overstimulation - an overtired or overexcited pup will be a mouthy pup. ๐Ÿ˜œ
Speaking of tired, toilet training will be a breeze if you stick to a consistent routine. ๐Ÿšฝ Puppies usually need to go after waking up, eating, drinking, playing, or any exciting activity. And don't overdo it on the exercise front - their little bodies aren't ready for marathons just yet! ๐Ÿพ

While we're on the topic of activities, enrichment is key. ๐Ÿง  Introduce your pup to different textures, sounds, smells - it'll do wonders for their development. And when it comes to socialization, focus more on exposing them to new environments than interactions. It'll build their confidence and adaptability.

Last but not least, training should be a fun bonding experience for both of you. ๐Ÿ‘ Before you start working on commands, spend time nurturing that positive relationship. After all, your puppy looks to you for guidance, love, and patience as they learn how to be a brilliant Boxer.

It's a big responsibility, but also an incredibly rewarding one. ๐Ÿ’– Embrace every moment, stay consistent, and shower them with love. If you're looking for help with training your Boxer puppy, inside our Bombproof Boxer Training Club, you'll find the Baby Boxer Course - our six-week puppy program designed specifically for Boxer puppies. You've got this! ๐Ÿ’ช

"Koppa and I joined an intro to obedience group, to work on everything weโ€™ve learnt in this group in new places around new distractions, Koppa was a star and aced the sessions ๐Ÿคฉ
He really changed the instructors opinion on boxers (they are too silly, too playful)!
They wanted us to join the good citizen dog training but had no space in the bronze group until Septemberโ€ฆ However, they were keen for him to start asap so offered private 1:1 sessions very cheaply. We went to one of the sessions last week, at the end of it they said they had a few spaces in the gold plus class (continuation class) and thought actually Koppa could train alongside them, but advised they would probably be far more advanced but thatโ€™s ok he would get a jump start on his levels (would still need to do bronze, silver etc).
So we went to the first class yesterday evening, I wasnโ€™t expecting too much but Koppa blew everyone away, they were so impressed, he left with a new nickname, โ€œsmart cookieโ€ ๐Ÿ˜‚

During the session each dog had to walk by your side down a line of cones, on the way back sit at cone1, lay at cone2, stand at cone3 and have a body examine at cone4 then walk with you to a chair which they had to sit in front of and wait whilst you crossed the room and sat in another chair to recall them (we did the walking on lead because the dogs were new to him and I wanted him to succeed, but recall was off lead), he did brilliantly ๐Ÿ˜€
Then we had to set their mats up across the hall, stand on the other side with dogs ready to send them to bed (off lead and not following the dog), they had to ignore each other and go to bed when asked, Koppa aced this and instantly went into settle when he got to his bed (the others were asked to lay on approach). I was then asked to do all activities off lead because he didnโ€™t need it!! ๐Ÿคฉ
We are looking forward to next weekโ€™s session, he did amazing, I was so so proud ๐Ÿ˜.

Weโ€™ve also had lots of wonderful success out and about and in new places, beautiful LLW, fast disengagement from dogs, ignoring them when passing very close and walking away from dogs who are trying to have a good sniff of him (without being asked to walk away). Weโ€™ve even had dogs flying at us after selfish owners throw balls using their ball launchers right at usโ€ฆdog charging over, Koppa looking at me, quick yes and we walk off without him trying to run off to play. Super recalls from children, dogs, squirrels and a fox.

You might remember I said I was giving up on the park behind the house due to how distracting it is and dog owners who donโ€™t care what their dogs do. It was too much for Koppa and too stressful for me โ€ฆ.. well weโ€™ve been there every day this week and ignored everyone!! Koppa happily following me or playing with me instead (long line used due to some aggressive dogs) ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿคฉ

Iโ€™ve even found myself making excuses for us to get out for walks this week because theyโ€™ve been so wonderful.

Oh and thereโ€™s now a second garden cat that Koppa has learnt to ignore (we have to step over them to leave the house, because they wonโ€™t move) ๐Ÿ˜‚ as well as 2 ravens and 3 magpies who appear every meal time to wait to see if he leaves them any scrapsโ€ฆ sometimes he does, just a tiny bit and then watches as they take it ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

Koppa also had a wonderful time at the big play barn and was very brave giving everything a try ๐Ÿฅฐ "

Our webinar dives deep into these arousal problems, offering insights and solutions. This is your chance to learn from a qualified dog trainer and behaviourist who specialises in Boxers, understand where these behaviours come from, and how to address them effectively.

For the first time in Bombproof Boxer Training Club history, we are honouring with the Boxer of the Month award someone who won the title before!

Denise and her Boxer Betsy have achieved something absolutely phenomenal!
Betsy is reactive, hyper, challenging and full of energy. Actually, I should say she was!

In May, Denise successfully introduced Betsy to a new dog walker, which was no easy task given Betsy's dog-human reactivity.

But that's not all!

Thanks to consistent calmness, impulse control, and engagement training, Betsy is thriving out and about. She is now far less reactive, much more focused on her mom, and her confidence has grown. Betsy is making great decisions in situations that used to be challenging.

I am thrilled to witness this incredible transformation. ๐Ÿ˜

Denise, you and Betsy are an inspiration and a true testament that even the most challenging Boxers can be successfully trained through reward-based methods. โ˜บ

I came across this quote today, and it fits perfectly: "It won't happen overnight. But if you quit, it won't happen at all."

I know there were many ups and downs during Betsy's training journey. Thank you, Denise, for never giving up! You are absolutely the best, and I am so proud of you. ๐Ÿ‘

Is walking your Boxer a nightmare?
Does he pull and lunge on the lead or ignore recall?
Or perhaps his struggle is over-excitement or lack of focus?

๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ“ฃ Why is training your Boxer so important?
๐Ÿค” It's a common misconception that training is only necessary for "problematic" dogs, but in reality, training your Boxer dog from an early age can prevent them from becoming a problematic dog in the first place.
๐Ÿ’ช Training helps to create a strong bond between you and your Boxer dog. When you train your dog, you are teaching them to communicate with you effectively. This communication builds trust, and as your dog learns to trust you, your bond with them will grow stronger. Your Boxer will start to look to you for guidance and support, and you will become their protector, and their best friend.
๐Ÿ‘€ Training also helps you understand your Boxer's behavior better. You'll learn to recognize their body language, understand their needs, and respond appropriately. This will help you develop a deeper understanding of your Boxer's personality, and in turn, strengthen your relationship.
๐ŸŒŸ Not to mention, a well-trained Boxer dog is a joy to be around. You'll be able to take them on stress-free walks, visit dog-friendly places like pubs or restaurants, and even go on holiday together. Your Boxer will become a well-behaved and obedient companion that you'll be proud to have by your side.
๐Ÿ‘‰ So, if you want to create a strong bond with your Boxer dog and enjoy all the benefits of a well-trained dog, start training - it will be worth every effort and moment spent. ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’ช
