Bartók for Basses brings together a collection of 15 duets and 8 trios for double basses, arranged by David Heyes. Aimed at the intermediate duo and trio, these are pieces which offer musical and technical challenges in equal measure demonstrating the great versatility and potential of the double bass.

15 Duos for 2 double basses

Bartók’s 44 Duos for Two Violins were composed in 1931 at the request of the German violinist and teacher Erich Doflein, to provide young musicians with structured technical studies, and to introduce them to folk music. The melodies originate in countries of the Slovak region, and two feature a melody composed by Bartók himself. They are rife with bi-tonal passages, poly-rhythms, and many brash dissonances. The 44 Duos are divided into four books, where the pieces advance in difficulty.

David Heyes has selected 15 from books 1 and 2 which lend themselves easily to being transcribed for double basses. Each one has its own character and style, none lasting more than a minute, offering musical and technical challenges in equal measure. They continue to have both a didactic and performance element and would easily fit into any student recital or concert demonstrating the versatility of the double bass. The duos could easily be played by violin or viola and double bass, and any number of pieces can be played and in any order. The possibilities are endless.

Bartók for Basses: 8 trios for 3 double basses

For Children is a cycle of 85 short piano pieces by Béla Bartók. Composed between 1908-9 and divided into four volumes, each piece is based on a folk tune from Hungary or Slovakia. Books 1 and 2 (Hungarian folk tunes) and Books 3 and 4 (after Slovakian folk tunes) were revised in 1945 when the composer removed six pieces that were inaccurately transcribed or found not to be original folk songs.

David Heyes has selected eight pieces, seven based on Hungarian folk tunes and one (Oh, Mother-in-law!) based on a Slovakian folk tune to arrange for double bass trio. The original keys have used in most cases, with the occasional octave displacement to help maintain open and clear textures. The effective interplay between each bass offers many ensemble possibilities and the ability to explore a wide range of musical timbres and sound worlds.

Louise Farrenc - Le Berger Fidèle (The Faithful Shepherd) for Medium Voice & Guitar (or Piano)
Edited by Sarah Poole

This sweet pastoral style song tells the story of a young man who has fallen in love with Zélie, who pledges his love to her hoping for the promise of her love in return. If she says that she loves him, it would be a bright day for ever.

Le Berger Fidèle is a charming song, dedicated to Rosalie Galté, and was arranged for voice and guitar by Joseph Meissonnier (1790-1855) which perhaps presupposes that it was probably written with piano accompaniment at an earlier stage.

Happy 90th birthday to the legendary Bert Turetzky

“A Place in New England is played all in harmonics, apart from a few pizzicato open strings, and was composed for my younger students at Wells Cathedral School. The overall effect is evocative and atmospheric, introducing harmonics at an early stage of study. It was premiered at the school on Sunday 4 November 2018 as part of ‘A Turetzky Tribute’ to celebrate the 85th birthday of my great friend Bertram Turetzky." [David Heyes]

ARMAND RUSSELL (USA)

Armand Russell was born in Seattle, Washington in 1932. He received the Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from the University of Washington, with a major in music composition, and a Doctorate in music composition from the Eastman School of Music. He studied double bass with Leslie Martin, who played in the Seattle Symphony and Boston Symphony Orchestras, and at the Eastman School of Music with Oscar Zimmerman. His composition studies were with John Verrall and George McKay at the University of Washington, and with Bernard Rogers and Howard Hanson at the Eastman School.

Professionally, Armand Russell played double bass in many orchestras including the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Boston Pops Tour Orchestra, Rochester Philharmonic and Civic Orchestras, and Honolulu Symphony. COMPOSER OF THE DAY

VOJTA KUCHYNKA (1971-1942)

Vojtěch [Vojta] Kuchynka was born in the Czech town of Nové Strašecí on 7 May 1871. He studied double bass at the Prague Conservatoire with Vendelin Sládek (1851-1901) from 1885-91, and composition with Antonín Dvořák from 1891-93. In 1895 he was appointed 1st Double Bass and Soloist in the Orchestra of the Czechoslovak Folk Art Exhibition Orchestra, also conducted a number of choirs in the Czech capital and for a short time was the piano teacher of the family of Count Fürstenberg. Between 1899 and 1933 Kuchynka played in the National Theatre Orchestra in Prague and from time to time worked with the famous Czech Quartet.

He gave solo recitals until the day of his retirement when he celebrated his 600th recital, and was known as 'the Kubelík of the Double Bass', after the leading Czech violinist of the day Jan Kubelík (1880-1940). He was praised for his perfect technique, impressive harmonic work, interpretation and tasteful transcriptions of classical works. Most of his recitals were in Bohemia or Moravia and one concert in Prague, reviewed in The Strad by Miss Windust, stated "Alongside the brilliant performances of František Ondříček and Karel Hoffmann it was the admirable virtuosity of Vojta Kuchynka that made the deepest impression on me." He made the first Czech double bass recording for Parlophon, and Prague Radio broadcast recitals of his music to celebrate his 65th and 70th birthdays.
