Some great advice here ♥️
I feel a strong need to clarify something today ...
safe bedsharing not only saved my sanity, it possibly saved my baby’s life.
I don’t say that lightly but with the full awareness that up until the point I discovered information on how to reduce the risk of shared sleep I was unintentionally putting my baby at great risk multiple times a night, every night.
He could NOT settle in his cot.
Ever.
Even with our intense persistence with sleep training.
He just couldn’t.
But boy could that babe wake.
Every 45 minutes to an hour.
Every night.
Yep, we investigated it all.
Nope, that’s not your average kind of normal, but that was my baby.
And to tend to that child of mine I was up and needed SO many times a night, every night.
And up until 6 months of age, that involved me getting up to tend to him and doing my utmost to adhere to the safe sleep advice I knew ... keep him in his own sleep space. Do not co-sleep. Co-sleeping is dangerous.
No one told me that falling asleep with him on me in the nursing chair WAS co-sleeping...
I wasn’t trying to sleep with him.
I had every intention of putting him in his cot.
But I physically could not stay awake with him.
I could not.
But I didn’t realise the huge risk attached to my efforts trying desperately not to co-sleep.
For 6 months, my baby slept in dangerous situations regularly.
Was I negligent or careless?
No.
I was a desperately tired first-time mum trying to do everything right and adhere to the rules as I knew them.
No one told me about risk reduction strategies for shared sleep.
You can imagine my horror upon realising the danger I had inadvertently been placing my baby in when I found out about preparing a safer shared sleep surface for bedsharing.
I was so angry at myself.
I took it all on.
But it was only later that I came to realise that my anger was misplaced.
How the hell was I to know any different?
Where was the information?
It simply wasn’t available at the time unless you knew to go digging.
And that is not fair.
Not when research shows that over 75% of families will share a sleep surface with their infant in the first three months.
Thankfully, organisations and bodies such as The Lullaby Trust, the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine and Basis in the UK and the Australian College of Midwives and Australian Breastfeeding Association in Australia have recognised that blanket ‘no co-sleeping’ messaging is deeply flawed and have begun to actively share risk reduction strategies for safer shared sleep.
But it still remains largely taboo.
Any talk of co-sleeping online is often swiftly attacked by those in the anti and it shuts down far too many conversations and sparks fear when education could easily save lives.
The ‘co-sleeping is dangerous’ messaging could have killed my baby.
That’s a fact that still sends shivers down my spine.
But it’s also why I will tirelessly work to ensure that the message gets out there that safer sleep for your baby is about risk reduction for YOUR family. Your baby. Your circumstances.
You.
Not blanket ‘do this, don’t do that’ but access to quality information on what is known and how you can work to reduced risk in your setting.
If you’ve never had the chance to look into how to make shared sleep safer, check these resources out today, because even if you have no intention of ever sharing sleep with your baby, research says that there is a high likelihood that you will, and it would be brilliant if on those occasions you knew how to reduce risks

If you’re wanting a home birth or just interested. This is worth a watch.
Just ♥️
I had this info on a poster on my table at the Carousel event last night and absolutely loved talking to all of the pregnant mums about it, so many in disbelief at how incredible these findings are.
And these risk reductions are just for those PLANNING a home birth, regardless of where you give birth.
Findings from The Lancet, 2020, which looked at data from over 500,000 women giving birth in the UK.
"Maternal outcomes and birth interventions among women who begin labour intending to give birth at home compared to women of low obstetrical risk who intend to give birth in hospital: A systematic review and meta-analyses"

Amazing breast milk. We use tiny drops of it as medicine for premature babies, it’s that powerful ♥️
A photo showing droplets of breast milk fending off armies of harmful bacteria in Petri dishes is going viral on Facebook.
The photo, posted by a biology student in England, features nine Petri dishes completely colonized with the bacteria M. Luteus, except in the center, where tiny puddles of breast milk have created what looks like “moats” of protection around themselves.
The student, Vicky Green, said she had similar results with Petri dishes full of e.Coli and the dreaded anti-biotic resistant “super bug” MRSA.
“The white spots in the middle are discs soaked in two samples of breastmilk,” Green wrote in the caption of her post. “See the clear bit around the discs ― that’s where the proteins in the milk have inhibited the bacteria!”
An article from YourPediatrician.com explains how this is possible:
“About 80 percent of the cells in breast milk are macrophages, cells that kill bacteria, fungi and viruses. Breast-fed babies are protected, in varying degrees, from a number of illnesses, including pneumonia, botulism, bronchitis, staphylococcal infections, influenza, ear infections, and German measles. Furthermore, mothers produce antibodies to whatever disease is present in their environment, making their milk custom-designed to fight the diseases their babies are exposed to as well.”
What’s even more impressive is that the samples of milk in the photos came from the mother of a 15-month-old and a 3-year-old, providing further evidence that breast milk continues to protect against illness long beyond infancy.

Dear soon to be twin/triplet mum,
We know you might be feeling anxious, overcome with emotions, excited and exhausted and that’s perfectly normal. Once the shock of a pregnancy with multiples starts to wear off it’s quite usual for feelings of anxiety and stress along with excitement and joy to come and go in waves. It’s normal to wonder how you will do it all. How will the logistics of having two or three babies at once work?
It might be hard to say these things out loud as you don’t want anyone to think you’re ungrateful for the miracles growing inside you.
It’s not that you’re not happy or excited to be having twins or triplets but it wasn’t something that was planned when you first thought about having a baby and the life you had envisioned has changed. This is all new and it’s hard to find someone who really understands as everyone you know had their babies one at a time.
We get it! We know finding others who are in similar situations can be helpful so we’ve set up Facebook groups so you can meet other pregnant women who are feeling the same. We have courses to help prepare you for what’s about to happen. We also have a helpline, Twinline that’s open for you to get in touch if you need to.
If you’re processing all the maybe’s we want you to know that you will cope, you will get through and it can be done. You’re going to be an amazing mum. And if you ever need reassurance, advice or just someone to listen, we are here.

The Holistic Birth School story
Welcome to The Holistic Birth School, I am so glad to have you here. My name is Paris Senior - a little about me: I am first and foremost a mother to James- Daniel, and also a fully qualified UK Midwife with a special interest in antenatal education and holistic therapy. In particular aromatherapy, positive mindset, herbal treatments & massage therapy. I live in England on the East Yorkshire Coast with my Beautiful Son and 2 naughty dogs and am the founder at The Holistic Birth School.
As a holistic midwife, I help pregnant women wanting to avoid drugs & harsh chemicals, learn how to safely harness the power of Essential oils so they can support themselves through pregnancy and childbirth, live clean, and be the mother who cares for their family’s health and home naturally.
Having used essential oils and aromatherapy in my personal life and within my midwifery practice for many years, I am constantly amazed at the power of nature, and how, (with a little knowledge and education) these amazing pure oils can have such a positive effect in our lives.
Essential oils can easily be incorporated into your life to reduce the number of chemicals in our immediate and wider environment. With the right guidance, essential oils can be safely used to aid many ailments in pregnancy, for childbirth support and as a new mother caring for her family.
I find it comforting knowing that my son can pick up food from a surface, or bathe in a bath that is not coated in chemical cleaners polluting his future world or breathing their fumes into his lovely little body. I feel reassured that I am able to treat many ailments and health problems naturally, without resorting to drugs and antibiotics. I am extremely passionate about sharing these life skills with like-minded women who wish to go through pregnancy and childbirth and live life more naturally.
Being pregnant is time for self-reflection and great changes within & outside of our bodies. Essential oils can assist with many issues and problems during pregnancy, during labour and in the postnatal period and far beyond. From, easing nausea and vomiting, to managing anxiety and fears, to easing tired aching bodies, managing pain, inducing labour and aiding symptoms in the postnatal period for Mum, Dad & Baby.
Regarding preparation for parenthood, I wholeheartedly believe that knowledge creates self-empowerment and confidence within, which is why I feel that antenatal education is so vitally important. I believe that education should start early in pregnancy and the journey into parenthood in order to strive for the very best outcome for your new addition(s) and changes to family life. Preparation is key and I am happy to personally support you through this.
Having a baby is, no doubt, a life-changing experience, whether this is your first or your tenth baby. I fully understand that whilst pregnancy and new parenthood is an amazing journey, upon which you, your baby and your family have embarked, it can also be a bit scary. Feelings of elation, wonder, disbelief, amazement and excitement can be tempered with questions, anxieties, worries and concerns.
The Holistic Birth School is born from knowing that parental education should stem from quality research and current best evidence, however, that there is no 'one size fits all' when it comes to individual families. Each family is unique, each person within the family is unique, and no two pregnancies are the same, neither are their educational needs.
