Latest information from the Forest & Arboriculture Training Fund:

"We are pleased to announce that the Forestry and Arboriculture Training Fund is now open for new applications.

Applicants can apply by visiting: https://www.forestryandarbtrainingfund.co.uk/

Applicants should note that training must be completed by 31st March 2025. Funding will not be awarded for training courses that have either been booked or completed prior to a grant award being made.

Funding for courses is limited and we would encourage those interested to apply early. Priority will be given to those individuals who either have not previously been awarded grant funding through the programme, or who have been awarded funding for less than 3 courses since February 2023. Individuals who have previously been awarded funding for 3 or more courses may still apply, but there is no guarantee that any further grant funding will be awarded."

A good return on investment (ROI) for training is achieved when the benefits of the training programme outweigh the costs incurred. This goes beyond just monetary gains and includes enhanced employee performance, increased productivity, and improved overall organisational effectiveness. Effective training should align with company goals, and address specific skill gaps. A key indicator of a positive ROI is the measurable improvement in employee skills and capabilities, translating into enhanced job performance. Additionally, a well-designed training programme fosters a culture of continuous learning, which can lead to long-term benefits as employees adapt to evolving industry trends. Ultimately, a good ROI for training not only showcases immediate financial gains but also contributes to the long-term sustainability and competitiveness of the organisation in a dynamic business landscape.

➡️ Tree decay: a few questions still worth asking

In 1982, David Lonsdale took on the job of leading a research project on decay in amenity trees.

At the time, tree work practices were changing in response to research findings in the USA, where Alex Shigo and co-workers had developed the concept of “compartmentalisation of decay in trees” (CODIT). They had also demonstrated failures of wound paints to prevent decay.

The resulting changes in tree work practice are now long established but David believes that there are still questions worth asking, especially the following:

🌳 The CODIT model was developed to replace the allegedly flawed heart-rot concept, which dated back to the late 19th century. Was the heart-rot concept really flawed?

🌳 Are decay fungi ever parasitic or pathogenic?

🌳 The “D” in CODIT is now often taken to represent dysfunction, rather than decay. Why might this be appropriate?

🌳 Wound paints: are they really useless?

🌳 Biocontrol of decay in pruning wounds: could this be worthwhile?

Colder days and longer nights can be challenging. Outdoor work becomes more difficult. Rural isolation can rise and a spike in bills can hit those without financial or social security. As we turn towards the winter, it is a good moment to invest in our own connectivity. Why not participate in one of our free online courses www.seltc.co.uk

Fancy a career change?

Free practical forestry training courses now available

Courses funded by government teaching skills like chainsaw maintenance, coppicing, woodland management, and
marketing and selling timber are now available.
The Forestry Training Fund is for people considering a change of career or those who are seeking to build and
diversify their skills in forestry.
Examples of courses which are covered by the fund include:
 coppicing
 chainsaw maintenance and cross-cutting
 managing your woodland
 planning and planting a new woodland
 marketing and selling timber
 fencing and hedge laying
The government is offering 100% funding for eligible courses and expect grants to be in the range of £150 - £3,000.
Funding will be paid directly to the training provider. Applications for funding to cover training courses can be made
multiple times as long as it can be demonstrated that individual courses are developing a person’s career.
You can see our latest course dates here www.seltc.co.uk
To make your application go to https://www.gov.uk/guidance/forestry-training-fund or email [email protected]
and we can help you apply.
The government has committed to increasing tree-planting across the UK to 30,000 hectares a year by the end of
Parliament to reach net zero emissions by 2050. The short, practical training courses will be paid for by a £700,000
allocation from the £750m Nature for Climate Fund and will help grow the forestry sector so that we have enough
people with the right skills to plan, plant, and manage new woodlands.

Transport of Livestock

If you transport animals on journeys of more than 65 km as part of an economic activity you must hold a certificate of competence to do so.
There are two assessments of competency: -

1- Short journey authorisation for journeys longer than 65 km and up to and including eight hours duration

2- Long journey authorisation that covers all journeys, including those lasting more than eight hours

We provide both City & Guilds/NPTC qualifications with flexible delivery and species specific (e.g. cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, poultry, horses, game birds).

Assessments cover the legal requirements, journey planning, vehicle suitability, fitness to travel, causes and signs of stress in animals, space allowances, stocking densities, handling and animal welfare in transit and post journey requirements.

Short Journey Assessments can be computer based multiple choice questions from our site or from your own home/office.
If you would prefer a one-to-one assessment with our assessor this can also be arranged.

Long Journey Assessments are on a one-to-one basis with our assessor.
