Hackney Speedway

Hackney Speedway, once the greatest place in the world.......

27/07/2024

This is the 2024 Vic Harding Memorial Trophy being held at Iwade Speedway home of the Kent Kings on Sunday 4th August, first race 2pm sharp.
Vic is still so fondly remember by so many. It will be I’m sure a great day but with a singe of sadness of our friend….
If you don’t drive why not book a seat on the special bus, (a London routemaster no less) that will be running from the former home of the Dons Plough Lane Stadium. At just £10 return that in itself is worth the ride on a iconic London bus.
Details on booking your seat email Jon Stevens [email protected]

26/07/2024

Have you booked your seats on the Routemaster bus to the London Tournament? Do it now!

26/07/2024

Back in the day what songs you remember being played at Wimbledon, White City, Hackney and of course Kent.

Delighted to say Mr Hackney Speedway himself Barry Thomas has agreed to be team manager for the Hawks on Sunday 4th August.
His long time sponsor at Waterden Road Chris Fenn will be assisting Thommo. Chris is also bringing Thommo’s bike down to the meeting that he won The Junior Championship of the British Isles at Canterbury in 1970 and you never know you might just see the skipper have a ride around.

Forget the Speedway GP at Cardiff, the Speedway of Nations at Belle Vue, but the biggest meeting in British Speedway takes place at Kent King’s Iwade track on the 4th August. Our friends at Wimbledon are running a bus from the old Plough Lane Stadium, now called the Cherry Red Records Stadium and open to all including of course Hackney & White City fans. Contact Patrick John Lynch to book your tickets, he writes,

“We're running the bus to & from Iwade for the return of the Yellow & Red Wimbledon Dons to Speedway racing, & we'll be giving out freebies to celebrate.
70 places available- £10 return - all profits to charity.
A special commemorative programme will be available featuring all of the teams competing.
Sunday 4th August 10.30 AM departure from the Cherry Red Records stadium, pay on the gate at the Kent Kings stadium for the event.
DM for seat reservations.
Special thanks to Kingsley & Craig at DLAG for their support. 💛❤️
In partnership with WiSH”

It’s been a while coming, but the Hackney Hawks will be back racing on a speedway track!
The date to put in your diary or for the younger folk a note on your mobile phone!

The date Sunday 4th August
The time 2pm
The venue Iwade

Joining the Hawks on track will be the Wimbledon ‘Dons’, White City ‘Rebels’ plus host’s Kent ‘Kings’ and will race for the Vic Harding Memorial Trophy.

It’s sure to bring back the rivalry that existed between the Don’s, Rebels and Hawks fans.

There’ll be rider announcements and more details on special guests in the coming weeks.

Many on this group will remember with great fondness Friday nights at The Wick. We had ‘great times’ and of course some ‘not such great times’. HSSC coaches to away tracks on a Saturday where very special but we just didn’t realise it way back then.

Keep an eye on this page, also on hackneyspeedway.com for some exciting news later this week about the Hawks.

Up the Hawks!

Mr & Miss Vintage UK 2024 (Voting Album) 18/06/2024

Hope Hackney Speedway fans will support Jon Steven’s.

Jon Stevens (from SW London)

"'Mr Wimbledon'. I am known for my vintage look in most things I do, I have always had a passion for vintage clothing and style. Art deco being my favourite. This fits nicely with my passion and love for vintage dirt track motorcycle speedway racing. London and Wimbledon Dons related as can be seen in this photo. I’m In genuine 1930’s leather breaches jacket and boots, wearing spearpoint white shirt and tie underneath, which was the done thing in the 1930/40’s. With my 1940’s Wimbledon Dons race tabard on this 1929 Rudge dirt track racer motorcycle and demob suitcase. I am curator for the speedway heritage at Wimbledon in sporting history (WiSH)"

Congratulations to Sam Hagon on becoming British under 21 champion. Of course Sam is the son of former Hawk Martin Hagon. Wonder if Sam would have liked the Waterden Road track, you bet he would 👍🏻

It’s the quiz of the week! Who are these two that seem to have Hackney connections……

Standby Sheffield
The Hackney Speedway gang are preparing and getting in practice for a beer or two tomorrow.
Dave Morton don’t think you’ll be buying any beers.
Paul Wyer it’s going to be a ball……

Sad to hear the passing of John Louis. Always will be associated with Ipswich but was Hackney team manager in that team of 88. RIP JL

Throw back Friday, Hawks Keith White and Barry Thomas with Snowy Beatie looking a little tired.

Many of you will remember walking through the front turnstiles at Hackney Stadium.
You’d be greeted by very pleasant ladies selling raffle tickets. One being the much missed Vi, then I think there was the punk rocker girl and the other Linda Aspro. To be honest I’m not sure what happened to the punk rocker girl (think she lives in Newcastle, Australia) and Linda (think she moved to Dublin. Someone has told me it’s Linda’s birthday today.
So if it is Linda get a pint of Guinness down yer to celebrate 70 glorious years 😂
From everyone at the Wick that remembers you, (that’s everyone 😂 😂 😂) happy birthday and many happy returns. I’m exactly sure what means but assume other people sending birthday greetings 👍

18/12/2023

Skipper Barry Thomas, Mr Hackney Speedway, sends seasonal greetings to all and wishes everyone a Merry Christmas, a happy & healthy New Year.

17/11/2023

Delighted to be off to The Speedway Show tomorrow selling a few bits, I hope 🤞
It’s just deciding what to take and not what to take 😂

24/09/2023

Been posted on all the speedway sites. In case you don’t read these sites it’s Dave Morton’s birthday. What I want to know though, how the bloody hell can he be 70!
Happy birthday Mort from everyone at Waterden Road and indeed you are one of the Magnificent Seven and always will be at Hackney Speedway legend.

Horrendous accident with Nicolai Klindt. These guys are absolutely mad (but in the nicest way) but thanks for entertaining us.

Don’t usually do birthdays. But always a popular visitor at The Wick was former Doncaster Stallion, Berwick, Sheffield, Halifax, Birmingham and Edinburgh rider Doug Wyer who celebrates his birthday today.
We perhaps only saw Doug when he rode for his northern teams when they visited Waterden Road. Certainly in the mid seventies Doug was probably at the peek of his career. In 1976 he reached his only world final appearance scoring 8 points.
Today Doug can often be seen donning those famous white leathers at Scunthorpe having a spin. Happy birthday Doug and hope you have a great day. .

Crayford v Workington springs to mind if your watching Poole v Plymouth, that’s if your old enough…….

17/04/2023

With this news all over the internet, will Poole be next as widely rumoured? With clubs now not wanting speedway (Kent Kings and
Newcastle) it makes you wonder what on earth is happening and why speedway is getting the cold shoulder.

CLUB STATEMENT | 🐺

WOLVERHAMPTON Speedway have received notification that Speedway racing will cease at Monmore Green on October 31 this year.

The Club have been informed by Entain Group that the tenancy agreement will not be extended beyond the end of this season.

Club bosses are devastated by the news and will be making no further comment at this stage.

Would certainly liven up meeting

26/03/2023

I find it quite amazing that so called ‘speedway fans’ are asking if they can get BSN for free on their
firesticks!
I appreciate many people are finding it hard to budget their £ notes and go to speedway, but if you pay to watch speedway on the BSN app those £ notes go back into British speedway!
As a matter of interest does anyone know with Eurosport’s coverage of the Elite league how much money filters though (if any) to those clubs or British speedway in general?

21/03/2023

This feller Paul Wyer Art is rumoured to be thinking of doing a Barry Thomas pencil portrait. I’m sure many will be jumping at the chance to buy one, I certainly am!

My latest pencil portrait is starting to look something like now ✏️
Sam Ermolenko with Greg Hancock behind, from 1994 I think.
I'm probably going to start drawing the 1990 World champion next but I've a couple of pet portraits to get underway also.
Hopefully get this one finished in the next week or two 🤞 🏁

Very sad to read that our former rival and later to become the Kestrels team manager John ‘Tiger’ Louis is suffering from dementia.
