Music is a major part of Glastonbury, but each year festival organisers are faced with new recommendations, questions and complaints about noise levels – including low frequency noise.

Low-frequency noise is one of the leading causes of sound-related disturbance and is related to headaches, tiredness, trouble with concentration, irritation and pressure on the eardrum - a concern for local residents, staff and festival goers.

Whether you’re looking forward to the football or not, there’s certainly a lot of noise about it!

(See what we did there?)

⚽️ Here’s a football fact for you…

The average level of noise during a stadium football match is around 90 dB. Just four hours of exposure to that level of noise can cause permanent hearing damage.

One of the biggest complaints when spending time outdoors in the garden during summer is noisy neighbours!

Here are a few gardening tips to help tackle the problem:

🌳 Create a good soundproofing wall of greenery between gardens. Separating your garden makes a big difference.

🌼 Move your garden furniture back against your house wall to make your noise louder to you.

🌱 Lawns are a natural sound barrier and can reduce noise levels by up to 10 dB.

🪴 Rough surfaces absorb sounds - willow work or evergreen plants such as bay, strawberry trees and conifers can help to reduce noise all year round.

Nuisance noise can have a range of effects on our mental health.

Our brains constantly monitor sound for signs of danger, even when we sleep. As a result, loud, frequent and prolonged exposure to noise can increase sensitivity and trigger anxiety or stress.

As it’s Mental Health Awareness Week this week, it’s a good time to make mental health a priority and consider how the level of noise you are exposed to might impact your mental health.

Residents in Frontenex, France, have had trouble with some very noisy neighbours!

Villagers complained to police after they were kept awake at night by a group of loud frogs in a local garden!

Frogs make noise to find mates and rely on sound to reproduce, this makes them particularly vulnerable to noise pollution - which means our noise is probably much more harmful to them than their noise is to us!
