I've been introducing some of my counselling clients to this skill of EFT Tapping and this blog post below describes the latest research on why tapping is so effective and works so quickly. Check it out below and contact me if you would like to learn more about tapping. It is quick and easy to learn and I've also been benefitting from using it in my own life.

I am often asked what methods I would use in couples therapy. Here is quick summary of the integrative approach I use. The integrative approach draws from these three main methods and may also use a few other supplemenatary therapies that may benefit a couple in their particular situation. Here are the three main methods :
1) Gottman Method. Created by John Gottman and his wife Julie Gottman. It is a researched-based approach which shows how negative emotion and the inability to meet your partner's bids for connection can harm the relationship. Strategies promote deeper intimacy and understanding of your partner and teach partners how to express affection and respect more effectively.
2) Emotion-Focussed Therapy. Sue Johnson bases EFT on attachment theory, showing how when the emtional bond between a couple is restored, the relationship starts to thrive again. Couples are encouraged and guided to access their emotions, learn how to be more vulnerable and safe for each other and discover how it is easier to solve problems once the emotional bond is restored.
3) Imago Therapy. Developed by Harville Hendrix and Helen Hunt, it helps couples discover how their past attachement to their original caregivers has shaped them to function in relationships. This enables partners to understand each other's perspective and get the love they want.
I also offer expertise in dealing with intercultural couples, high-mobility couples and neurodiverse couples where one or both partners are neurodivergent.
Couples counselling usually focusses on specific goals to improve the relationship and on average couples attend 10-12 sessions with options to check-in going forward every few months if so desired.

Presented a workshop on Working with Cultural Differences and Racism in Counselling for the Counselling Forum in Aberdeen today. A lovely group of counsellors.

A recent testimonial from Kevin Northrop, Director of a counselling centre in Stockport who attended the course on Working with Cultural Differences in Counselling :
I found the training very interesting and it provoked numerous questions for me, which shows how effective it was in getting more than just information across.
I knew about cultural differences but had never considered my own! And especially how they might impact and be subtly imposed on others in the counselling room. So the training was a real eye-opener. I am now more aware how important it is for me to be able to recognise and put my culture to one side and not assume it is the right and only way to think!
Collaborated with my husband Glen to co-deliver the course on Working with Race and Racism in Counselling. Here is a small sample of Glen’s introductory talk on how the current race construct we have in the west came about historically.

I often get asked to explain what counselling is and I find this image below is helpful in describing the process of counselling. What often feels like confusion, a range of strong emotions, random thoughts and difficult experiences can all be understood and worked through in counselling. The first stage is to help the client gain understanding and awareness and then this is followed by resourcing the client with strategies and new ways of thinking that can change their thoughts, emotions, behaviours and life.
