Team City Lifting - British Talent Cup team
Donington Park played host to the second round of the 2024 Honda British Talent Cup Championship over the weekend of 17th to the 19th of May and ran on the fast and flowing 2.4873-mile-long GP circuit. First on the agenda for Team City Lifting/RS Racing was the opening free practice session of the weekend which got underway late Friday afternoon at 17:00pm. Due to some riders taking part in GCSE exams, this was the only session for Filip and Clayton on Friday.
Clayton headed out and got 15 laps under his belt to open his weekend, setting his fastest time on his 15th and final flying lap. A 1:42.801 saw him end the session 8th on the timesheets, 1.641 off fastest man, Julian Correa.
Friday was a different story for Filip as on his opening flying lap, he had a crash at Coppice which brought a premature end to his session. After a trip to the medical centre for a check over, Filip was declared fit and ready for free practice 2 which got underway first thing Saturday morning at 9am.
As we headed into FP2, it was cloudy overhead with cool conditions. Clayton went out on track and completed 14 more laps of the Donington GP circuit. His fastest time came on his 13th flying lap, with a 1:41.628 placing him 6th on the timesheets.
Filip also got 14 laps under his belt, easing his way into the weekend after his mishap on Friday. His fastest time came on his 13th flying lap, with a 1:42.297 placing him 11th on the timesheets.
Up next was qualifying which got underway a little later at 12:10pm. Filip set a fastest time of 1:40.440 which would see him line up for race one from the middle of the front row, with Julian Correa on pole and Lucas Brown alongside in 3rd. Clayton set a fastest time of 1:40.644 which would see him start from row 2, in 6th place with Amanuel Brinton and George Bowes for company.
The opening race of the weekend got underway at 15:30pm Saturday afternoon and after the sighting lap, the grid formed, the red lights came on and it was heads down, revs up and lights out as we were away racing for the first time of the weekend. From the off it was Filip who got the holeshot however Julian Correa soon took the lead from Filip as they headed down into the old hairpin. Clayton slipped back a few positions from the off and found himself in 9th place after the opening corners. After some swapping of positions, Filip settled into 4th while Clayton settled into 8th. Both riders were content with where they were in the opening laps, just studying the riders ahead to see where they are weak and where they are strong in order to come up with a gameplan in their heads. Both riders kept showing their front tyre to the rider ahead to let them know they were still right on them and applying some pressure in a bid for them to make a mistake to allow an easy overtake. As we began to enter the closing stages of the race, Filip decided it was time to make his move and on the 10th lap made his way up into 2nd with some stunning overtakes into the Fogarty Esses and Melbourne Loop. Filip then got the perfect slipstream down the Wheatcroft straight which allowed him to make a move on Lucas Brown for the lead of the race on lap 11. However, Lucas was not going to give it up easily and got the switch back, reclaiming the lead on the exit of Redgate. At this point, Clayton was sitting in 8th place with George Bowes for company on his back wheel, the pair were just behind this lead group and hoping that with some squabbling going on at the front, they were going to be able to close the slight gap to the front runners. It all went wrong for Filip as they entered the Fogarty Esses, with him having to take the escape road which put him back down in 7th and out of podium contention. On the final lap, Filip managed to regain a position, with a pass on Harley McCabe into the Melbourne loop and as the chequered flag waved on race one, Filip crossed the line in 6th with Clayton just behind in 8th.
During the opening race, Filip set a personal fastest lap time of 1:39.816 which would see him start race two from pole position, with Clayton setting a 1:39.898 which saw him claim his highest qualifying position in the British Talent Cup, with a 3rd place start.
After a brief 8 minute warm up session on Sunday morning, it was soon time to get into the final race of the weekend which got underway at 11:15am.
The lights went out for the final time of the weekend and from the off, it was Ryan Frost who rocketed off the line and getting the holeshot into Redgate, with Filip slotting in right behind in 2nd and Clayton losing a number of positions off the start, to slot into 7th place. Filip soon made his move on Ryan Frost for the lead. Filip led for the opening lap before Julian Correa made a move for the lead down into the Old Hairpin, from here the battle was on. The top 6 had begun to pull away slightly, meaning Clayton was in some air on his own, trying to get right back onto the back of the lead group. There was position changing happening at every opportunity in the lead group and the battle was heating up. However, disaster struck for Filip on the 6th lap, as he crashed out of contention at the final corner bringing his race to a premature end. This meant it was just Clayton flying the flag for Team City Lifting/RS Racing, still sitting in 7th place, with Ronnie Harris and Ollie Walker just ahead. More drama unfolded in the front group, with Julian Correa crashing out of contention at the Melbourne Loop on the 8th lap whilst entering the long lap area, this moved Clayton up into 6th place. The race was cut short, with the red flag being brought out on the 11th lap and with two thirds distance complete, it was declared a result meaning Clayton came home in 6th place, bringing some important championship points home with him.
As we come away from Donington Park, Filip sits 6th in the championship with 48 points, and Clayton 7th just 3 points behind Filip and 49 points behind championship leader, Lucas Brown. The next round for the British Talent Cup will be at the beginning of July, at Snetterton over the weekend of 5-7th of July.
Clayton Edmunds #64: “Coming into round two after a flying start at round one in Spain I felt strong and ready to fight. The weekend went from strength to strength, my high of the weekend of setting the third fastest lap to be able to start p3 for race 2. Front row nerves did set in but what a lot learnt from this amazing weekend. Huge thanks again to the team. Ready for round 3 after a little summer break.”
Filip Surowiak : “The weekend overall was positive even though the results did not show it. We had the pace and felt really strong with the bike feeling great, just luck was not on our side. A mistake in race one with the fastest lap of the race and crashing out of the lead in race two. Will work hard and come back stronger for Snetterton.”

It's race week!! Who's ready and excited for round 2 of the 2024 British Talent Cup championship to get underway at Donington Park this weekend? We know we are 😎
The Team City Lifting/RS racing duo of Clayton Edmunds and Filip Surowiak were in action over the weekend of the 20th to the 21tst of April, with the 2.4261-mile Circuito De Navarra in Northern Spain playing host to the opening round of the 2024 Honda British Talent Cup for the first ever time. Before we got into race weekend action, we had a two day test which saw the boys learn the track and try a variety of different settings to find what worked and what did not work as we headed into the race weekend.
It was a busy Saturday with the weekend being condensed to two days, meaning we had four sessions starting with Free Practice 1. The weather conditions were bright and dry however, it was cold which meant only Filip rolled out of pitlane for this session. He got 8 laps under his belt to open the day, setting his fastest time on his 8th and final flying lap. A 1:52.308 saw Filip end the opening Free Practice session of the weekend 2nd on the timesheets, 0.676 off fastest man Julian Correa.
The second of the Free Practice sessions got underway a little later, with the weather warming up, both riders headed out to get some laps under their belts ahead of qualifying. Filip got 11 laps in during FP2, opening his account with a 1:54.159. He got faster as the session progressed and clocked his fastest time of the session on his 11th and final flying lap. A 1:49.787 saw Filip end the session 2nd on the timesheets, 0.485 off fastest man Amanuel Brinton. Clayton headed out and got 10 laps under his belt, opening his account with a 1:54.199. His fastest lap time of the session soon came on his 4th lap, with a 1:52.784 seeing Clayton end the session 18th on the timesheets.
Both riders opted to make some setup changes as we headed into qualifying and after a chat with Kyle Ryde, they knew where they could make improvements on their running from the morning.
Moving into the qualifying session which saw both Clayton and Filip get 11 laps under their belts. Filip set a fastest time of 1:50.027 which would see him line up from 6th for the opening race, with Mason Foster and Charlie Huntingford for company. Clayton set a fastest time of 1:51.141 which would see him start from 12th on the grid with Daniel Goodman and Joshua Raymond Jr for company.
The opening race of the 2024 season got underway at 17:47pm after a slightly delayed start with 18 degrees air temperature and 21 degrees track temperature. From the off, Filip made his way up into 3rd and was comfortably in the lead group of 5 riders which soon managed to make a break from the rest of the pack. Clayton lost a few positions during the opening few corners and found himself down in 15th place, but quickly got his head down to regain those places and by the end of the opening lap was back up into 12th place. Both Clayton and Filip were in their own intense battles, with positions changing at every opportunity for each rider. However, disaster soon unfortunately struck for Filip through no fault of his own. He was comfortably battling with Correa for the lead however, on the 10th lap of the race Amanuel Brinton who was sitting 3rd got it wrong as they headed into turn 9, clipping the tail section of Filip’s NSF250R and as a result it brought a premature end to Filip’s race. This meant that Clayton was now the lone City Lifting/RS Racing rider out there and was right in podium contention, battling with Ryan Frost, Harley McCabe and Ronnie Harris for the final podium position. It all came down to the final lap and Clayton did everything he could to try and claim his first British Talent Cup podium, crossing the line in 4th place, just missing out on the podium.
As we headed into race two, Filip would line up from the front row after setting a fastest lap time of 1:50.081 which should have seen him start 4th, but Amanuel Brinton who should have lined up from pole position had been handed a 3 place grid penalty for the incident in race one. Clayton would head row 3, starting in 7th after setting a fastest time of 1:50.856 in the opening race, he lines up with Harley McCabe and Ronnie Harris for company.
Moving onto Sunday and after a brief warmup session, it was soon time to go racing with the second race of the weekend getting underway at 10:35am. It was revs up, heads down and lights out as we were away racing for the second time of the weekend. From the off, Filip got into the lead of the race however race one winner, Julian Correa quickly made a pass for the lead and Clayton slotted himself into 7th place. Lucas Brown soon made a pass on Filip, shuffling him back to 3rd however Filip was happy to sit in 3rd and let Brown and Correa battle for the lead, waiting for an opportunity to make his move. Chaos soon unfolded further down the field, with an incident between Josh Bannister and Samuel Munson bringing out an early red flag. With two thirds distance not yet complete, we were set for an 8 lap restart, with Filip starting 4th and Clayton 6th.
After the marshals tended to the riders and cleared the debris up, we were away racing again. Clayton did not quite get the start he had hoped for in the restart and found himself down in 13th place with some work to do. Filip rocketed off the start, taking the holeshot and control of the race as they headed into turn one. There was very much a repeat of Saturday's race taking place, with the same top 5 quickly making a slight breakaway from the rest of the pack with Filip still comfortably in the lead. A little further down the order, Clayton was making quiet progress, making his way up into 11th place by the end of lap 2. Filip soon came under attack from Brinton and Correa, being shuffled back down to 3rd on the 3rd lap. However, Filip was not going to let them have it easy, and the battle was truly on. Clayton quickly made his way into the top 10 and was now defending his position from the pack of riders behind him while chasing down the group ahead. There was plenty of battling going on back at the front and it all came down to the run to the flag on the final lap of the race. Filip was sitting 3rd and in the final couple of corners, Brinton and Correa began to battle for the win, with the pair swapping positions and then on the run to the chequered flag, banging bars which cost them the win. Filip got the slipstream on the pair and came out victorious after a drag to the flag, taking victory by just 0.077 with Julian Correa crossing the line second and Amanuel Brinton rounding out the podium in third. Clayton came home in a lonesome 10th place after managing to break away from the riders behind but was not quite able to catch the riders ahead.
As we headed into the final race of the weekend, Filip would start from pole position after setting a fastest time of 1:49.157 in race two, and Clayton would start from 10th after setting the fastest time of 1:50.568. The final race of the weekend got underway at 14:30pm.
The riders formed on the grid after the warm up lap and it was heads down, revs up and lights out for the final time of the weekend. Both Filip and Clayton rocketed off the start, with Filip once again taking the holeshot into turn one and Clayton making up a few positions on the run to the first turn, making his way up into 7th place. Filip's lead soon came under attack from Lucas Brown, whilst Clayton attacked Ryan Frost to make his way up into 6th place. However, like the previous two races, the leading 5 once again made a break from the rest of the pack, leaving Clayton in the second pack having an intense battle for 6th place. There were plenty of position changes happening, with switches at every opportunity. Disaster struck for Julian Correa on lap 9, with a mechanical issue forcing him out of the race, making it a 4 rider battle for the win in the last few laps. It once again all came down to a drag to the flag for the front four. Filip was sitting 3rd however he found himself having to shut off due to Brinton and Brown almost touching, meaning he just lost out on the podium, getting pipped to the post by Mason Foster at the line for 3rd. Clayton crossed the line in 8th place, after having a fantastic battle for 5th throughout the race.
As we come away from Navarra, both Clayton and Filip bring home a solid haul of points, with Filip sitting 3rd in the British Talent Cup championship on 38 points, 20 behind championship leader Lucas Brown and Clayton sits joint 7th in the championship with Mason Foster, 31 points behind Brown.
Clayton Edmunds #64: “I felt really good coming into this weekend and I was so excited to get the new season underway. The Thursday and Friday test days went really well and I pushed on managing to get my lap times down each session going into the race weekend. I felt really good and was determined to be at the sharp end, coming away with a 4th,8th and a 10th. I feel really strong for round two which will be at Donington Park.”
Filip Surowiak : “The first weekend working with Ryan and the City Lifting team went amazing with me picking up my first race win and the lap record in the race. Still more to learn about the bike so full gas for Donington Park in a couple of weeks. I would like to thank the whole team for their hard work and support over the test days and the race weekend.”
