Today we meet another Devon born artist : Thomas Hudson a portrait painter and art collector
(1701-1779).
He trained under the successful portrait painter Jonathan Richardson, later marrying his daughter. His artistic friends included William Hogarth, Allan Ramsay and Francis Hayman. Hudson retained these connections, travelling to France, Holland and Flanders with Hogarth and Hayman in 1748 and to Italy with the sculptor Louis-François Roubiliac in 1752. Eventually establishing his own portrait-painting practice, he became increasingly fashionable.
Being artistic is not only about painting it is being creative. Sadly we lost the exceptional creative talent
Benjamin Obadiah Iqbal Zephaniah who was born in Handsworth Birmingham in 1958. A British writer, dub poet, actor, musician and professor of poetry and creative writing. He was included in The Times list of Britain's top 50 post-war writers in 2008.
He was dyslexic and left school aged 13, unable to read or write.
There is so much to we could write about this gentleman but instead I will finish with a few lines of his poem (which is appropriate for the time of year) Talking Turkeys.
'Be nice to yu turkeys dis christmas
Cos’ turkeys just wanna hav fun
Turkeys are cool, turkeys are wicked
An every turkey has a Mum.
Be nice to yu turkeys dis christmas'

Let's take a look at some work by another Devon born artist : Tom Rowden. He was a self taught landscape artist born on 7 February 1842 in Exeter. He is best known for depicting moorland animals, particularly cattle, ponies and sheep within a Devonshire landscape ( often Dartmoor). By 1886 he had established himself as an artist with exceptional talent, although he had almost certainly been painting earlier whilst in the Royal Marines. He made numerous painting excursions to Scotland where he perfected his skills at rendering exquisite compositions depicting the highlands. Tom lived in a house called Banavie, at St. Davids Hill, Exeter, where he died on 15 May 1926. He exhibited from 1884, twice at the Royal Hibernian Academy, and an example of his work may be seen in the Exeter Museum. He also exhibited at the Slade gallery in 1883. His pieces have gained great appeal amongst the lovers of the naturalist genre of art as is evidenced by his continuously strong auction records.

Quote for the Day: Lucien Freud.
What do you think?
Time to celebrate some Devon born artists. Joshua Reynolds was born July 16, 1723, Plympton, Devon, he died February 23, 1792, London. He was a portrait painter, aesthetician and teacher who dominated English artistic life in the middle and late 18th century. Through his art and teaching, he attempted to lead British painting away from the indigenous anecdotal pictures of the early 18th century toward the formal rhetoric of the continental Grand Style. With the founding of the Royal Academy in 1768, Reynolds was elected its first president and knighted by King George III.
Do you know the artist of the Christmas scene?. The answer will be revealed at the Mulled wine and mince pie event at Bitton house on Sunday 3rd December 2pm to 4pm. £5 per person. You can pay on the day. We look forward to seeing you there.

Last night was a fantastic opportunity to hear from a distinguished local artist. Robert Mountjoy Hon.SWAc treated our members to a mesmerising dive into his art process. It was fascinating to see artworks from an early age that are now relevant to his latest project looking at the water around urban seascapes.
Robert works tirelessly on projects producing initial sketches on site, reworking sketches again at home, before producing up to 30 paintings demonstrating his abstraction of these images.
See his work online, on YouTube, & at
www.robertmountjoy.art
Robert's books featured soon.
We can't wait to welcome Robert Mountjoy Hon.SWAc to our monthly Professional Artist Talk TONIGHT.
All welcome to join us.
Free to TAS members/£5 non-members Teign Heritage - Teignmouth & Shaldon Museum (doors locked at 7pm).
Tea/Coffee break at 8pm.
