Which visionaries of the past would you like to remember today?

Perhaps Marie Curie who was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize?

Maybe Frida Kahlo who taught us so much about embracing her ‘flaws’ and challenging societal normals?

Anne Boleyn? Executed by her husband and King Henry VIII after being accused of witchcraft amongst other accusations.

Or possibly Sheila Kitzinger, known amongst other amazing things for her advocacy for women’s rights in childbirth.

Who would you choose to celebrate today? Let me know in the comments. ❤️

I am oh so proud to have trained with Developing Doulas back in 2019 and consider myself a DD through and through.

As Maddie says, we doulas are here to support your wants and desires, whatever that means your birth may look like.

Please do get in touch to chat some more if you’re looking for a doula in the wider area. I am currently taking bookings for the end of the year and beyond, but I don’t expect to have space for much longer.

📰Breaking News

DOULAS ARE JUST MADWOMEN PROFITING FROM NATURAL BIRTH.

Really?
Do we have an agenda? Do we make money from natural birth?
Do we judge and refuse those who need or choose a medicalised birth?
No.
I don’t know how some people out there got that impression but here at Developing Doulas we abide by the philosophy that our clients have the right to choose. We teach doulas to support their clients to gather the information they need to make informed decisions, knowing the pros and cons of all their options.
I don’t know of a doula training organisation that does anything different.
We are drowning as a society in birth trauma. Some people say it’s because women and birthing people’s bodies are failing. Others say our health service is failing.
Which is it do you think?
Doulas don’t care how you give birth. We just care that you are safe and satisfied.
Why is it so strange that we are sad when we see our clients dreams for their birth sabotaged by a system that lacks compassion and individualised care?
I don’t know who is driving this narrative that doulas and midwives judge mothers for their choices. Our job is to support parents to navigate through their birth journey in a way that maximises health and happiness.
End of.
If you’d like a doula for your birth, check out the DD Directory. Or perhaps you feel the pull to provide loving, non judgemental, non clinical support to new parents. Check the links in our bio.

End of news flash.

What are the benefits and risks associated with doula support in labor? Save this post for later! ✅

In 2017, Bohren et al. published an updated Cochrane review on continuous support in childbirth. They combined the results of 26 trials with more than 15,000 people across 17 countries including North America, South America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Oceania, in both high-income and middle-income settings.

People in these studies were randomly assigned (like flipping a coin) to either receive continuous, one-on-one support during labor or “usual care.”

Overall, participants who received continuous support were more likely to have spontaneous vaginal births and less likely to have any pain medication, epidurals, negative feelings about childbirth, vacuum or forceps-assisted births, and Cesareans. In addition, their labors were shorter by about 40 minutes on average, and their babies were less likely to have low Apgar scores at birth (an Apgar score is a measure of a baby’s immediate health at birth). There was some evidence that doula support in labor lowered rates of postpartum depression. There was no evidence that there are any negative effects of doula support.

The results of this study mean that continuous support, including support from a doula, is a safe and beneficial way to increase the chances of better health outcomes for your family.

Ever feel like you're having a convo with Nessa when talking to a medical professional??

Cutting through the acronym's and medical jargon can be tough. Many people come away from their appointments feel bamboozled, or worse, coerced into something that they didn't understand or want. - Sometimes not even aware that they HAVE A CHOICE!

The NICE guidelines state that: "People have the right to be able to make informed decisions about their care." - Yet so many people are not being provided with the information they need to achieve this.

This is why I offer hourly Zoom calls. It is a place to breakthrough the jargon and make sure that you go into your next appointment or decision in a truly informed way.

You will always leave the call (or virtual Doula contact or one-2-one course or birth plan writing session) with links to EVIDENCE BASED articles, podcasts, books, videos or online course - the format will always be tailored to your fav learning style, and your birth partner's too!

Message me now to find out more about the how's and how muches.

Look lokward to speaking to you soon.

Low PAPP-A? It can be hard to find info on this subject, this is a fantastic post here from

▪️▪️ Repost ▪️▪️

Low Papp-A 💉

This can be a really tricky topic to find evidenced based information on ( I’m waiting on you 😉) so hopefully this summary will help.

⭐️ Low Papp-A may be detected as part of your first trimester screening for Down’s syndrome. However, you may not feel you explicitly consented to this so it often comes as a shock.
⭐️ A diagnosis can often mean Aspiring is recommended, plus more scans are offered to monitor baby’s growth. Remember, it is your choice if you accept these or not.
⭐️ Induction may be recommended at 40 weeks. I could find NO evidence to support this when a baby’s weight was good (if there is, please point me in the right direction).

Have you had a diagnosis of low PAPP-A? Does this answer your questions?
Comment your experience below and make sure you follow me for more pregnancy and labour advice and evidence based information.

Feeling grateful to have met such an incredibly wonderful family. 🥰

Review image text:

Sarah is just the best, I can’t imagine my birth without her ❤️

From the moment she joined us on our birth journey we knew we were in the best hands. Sarah draws on an incredible set of online and offline resources, meditations and tools which made us feel confident and prepared for the birth of our baby.

Sarah is very knowledgeable - she supported us with any questions we had throughout our birth journey and was always able to point us to lots of different resources for us to form opinions and create our birth plan.

Aa a same s*x couple we were grateful that Sarah’s materials were already inclusive and she checked in with us on a number of occasions to ensure nothing was missed even down to how we wanted to be addressed by staff in hospital.

As soon as labour started Sarah was there with a Mary Poppins style bag producing anything I could need in that moment from snacks to scents, even mood lighting! She has a very calming presence and was an absolute rock helping me stay calm, control my breathing, talk through visualizations and so much more.

Sarah moves with great intuition and sensitivity. We feel very blessed to have had her with us for the birth of our baby, I can’t recommend her highly enough.

Amazing news from …

Gas and air has now been fully reinstated at both Hinchingbrooke and Peterborough hospital maternity units. 🎉

It has been over a year since a the response to a health and safety report suddenly removed G&A from both units. It has been a loooong time coming for both parents and staff.

I would love to hear from you in the comments below if this affected you in either past or future births. 🙏🏻

Just received this HUGE bundle of Neal’s Yard Remedies goodness. 💙 It was the Frankinsense face cream I was really after, but I am so happy to see there’s essential oils in the bundle too.

I’ve joined as a consultant, primarily to get the discount for myself on this lot, but am now very tempted to offer it out to others to buy via me too.

What do you think? Would you order through me?

Fancy being added to a WhatsApp group so I can tell you when they have a sale on? 🤔
