Three peaks across three nations in a single day. That’s the challenge one man is undertaking next week to raise funds for Parkinson’s UK.

Lewis Mackenzie will tackle the three highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales, hiking over 23 miles and scaling 10,052 feet, as part of the fundraising challenge on Thursday.

He will be accompanied by two friends, Daniel Hill and David Thow, who are raising funds, respectively, for ocean conservation charity Blue Marine Foundation and the RAF Benevolent Fund. Their pal, Ben Clokie, will be their driver for the cross-nation trek.

They will start by climbing Ben Nevis, then travel down to England to tackle Scafell Pike, before finishing on the summit of Mount Snowdon in Wales.

The trio will drive 426 miles in between climbs in order to complete the challenge in 24 hours.

Lewis, who works as a contracts manager for his family’s firm, Tain-based building contractors Richard M Mackenzie Ltd, was inspired to fundraise by his father-in-law, Alan Drummond, who has spent many years living with Parkinson’s. Alan was formerly a police officer with the Northern Constabulary.

He set out to raise £2000, but has already collected more than £3500. You can support Lewis by donating to his JustGiving page here 👉 prksn.uk/3VArpdC

Good luck guys ⛰️

📢 Scottish Curling in partnership with Glasgow Ice Centre have launched an offer to buy Ayr Ice Rink in a bid to save ice sports in the area.

The proposal sets out plans to keep the current rink at Limekiln Road open and functional for roughly the next five years while a new facility is built. Curling, hockey, and skating would all continue to have a home, and the rink would be open to the community. 🥌🏒⛸️

‘We’ve had extensive conversations with a variety of agencies over the past weeks and indeed months,’ said Scottish Curling CEO Vincent Bryson. ‘We believe this collaboration with Glasgow Ice Centre, who are already a registered charity, is our best bid to keep Ayr Ice Rink open for the next few years and keep ice sports activities going.’

Glasgow Ice Centre was founded as a charity in 2020 with the objective of seeking to improve the health, wellbeing, and quality of life of the population by introducing a wide range of leisure activities and ice rink sports, such as curling, hockey, and skating.

Alan Hannah, a current Scottish Curling Director and high-performance curling coach with a wealth of experience across the sport, chairs the Glasgow Ice Centre Trustees.

‘We are excited about the possibility of retaining ice sports in Ayrshire,’ he said. ‘Whilst our name contains the word “Glasgow”, our charity was formed to act in the best interest of all ice sports nationwide. By making an offer for Ayr Ice Rink we are acting within the remit of our charitable aims, and I hope the offer is welcomed by the rink’s shareholders.’

Modern curling stone manufacture hasn't changed much since then. It's still a skilled manual process with very little machinery involved.
