Have you every wondered if you’d like more of an insight into coaching?
Coaching skills can also help with your own skating, as it builds an awareness of how to see/feel your movements and make tweaks.
In our coach for the track day we will show you how we break down and choose the key movements to focus on. Plus lots of other coaching insights!
"Just Play. Have Fun. Enjoy the Game."
- Michael Jordan
Is there anything better than getting your skates on and having a bash at this most often sport. Sometimes we get caught up in mapping our goals or overcoming our challenges. And that is important.
But, when it comes down to it, don't forget to take some time to just enjoy the game. 🤩
Ever feel off balance, or suddenly nervous on your wheels? Try practicing a ‘safety stance’.
The penguin stance is a great safety stance for new skaters.
⚡️ Put your feet in a ‘V’ to keep your wheels from rolling away from you.
⚡️Keep your chest up and your shoulders in front of your hips
Coaches and aspiring coaches! Here’s the info on our April workshop as promised!
We started this page to breakdown the WFTDA ‘This is Roller Derby’ curriculum and its different stages. A resource developed to create opportunities for learning, play and engagement at every level, without focusing on defined timelines for successful completion.
We’re going to recap on the Introduction stage over the next few weeks and then move into Exploration.
Hydra was the curriculum developer so we are well equipped to answer any questions you may have!
Here’s a list of our upcoming workshops to make planning a little easier for you :)
Tickets available now for all
Spot our latest Coach the Coach workshop in there too! More details coming on that next week so budding coaches, keep watching!
If you comment with the name of the workshop you’re interested in and we’ll send the details direct

Standing in a group: This Is Roller Derby Introduction.
It can be a big mental jump for skaters to go from skating in their own space to skating in a pack — it’s a good plan to get used to proximity while on wheels from the very beginning — even something as simple as just standing close in a group on skates can start to build familiarity and comfort levels.
So bring ‘em all in for a cheer!
How do you score points in roller derby?!
On the very first day of Recruits we always start with a jam or two of land derby before putting wheels on feet. We don't go through all the rules; we start with the basic structure and how to score points. And then we let it happen.
From the WFTDA Ruleset : Sec 3.1 Earning Points. Jammers score one point every time they lap an opposing Blocker.
Because they have to ‘lap’ the blocker, a jammer's initial pass through the pack does not earn them points. They do not start scoring until their second pass through the pack.
For each pass through the pack, a jammer can only score one point per blocker for a maximum of 4 points per pass.
Jammers can continue to score points until the fourth whistle when jam is called off... this is why you'll sometimes see a jammer speed up or flip to get their hips past an opponent's hips at that last second.

Let’s Keep Talking About Coaching
When I started coaching derby there was a void of information. I was handed a group of new skaters, keen as beans with quite very little skating, and I was expected to get on with it. Get on with teaching them to skate, getting them through their mins, and, most importantly, keeping them in the club. How on earth was I meant to do that with two hours a week and never having really been taught how to teach skating?
I saw so many other coaches in that same space. Wanting so hard to do the right thing but feeling utterly unsure about how to accomplish that. Not wanting to “wreck” that new intake. And I saw good competitive skaters leave the sport because they didn’t feel comfortable coaching, but had to coach because no one else would or could.
Derby Stance UK came out of the need to just have people to talk to about coaching. Bring all the coaches together in one place and just have it out. What do we need? What do we want? How can we get it? Oh and we got to listen to some amazing coaches at the same time to spark off all the ideas.
And the conversation started. And it caught up with conversations happening in other places. Coaching is part of the dialogue and we are working as hard as we can to keep it there.
We want to provide roller derby coaches and clubs with the resources and opportunities that they need to build on our standard of coaching and to push all of us to the next level.
As part of this, we’re running an annual online coaching summit (2019 dates announced soon!) and a coaching community on Facebook (you should join us). We also have an awesome collab project with Hive Skate Hub called Coach the Coach (pretty much what it says on the tin) we post coaching videos and run events.
And we’re always available for coaching, coach mentoring, and general all around chatting about coaching.
