At children's examinations DURAPHAT fluoride varnish will be offered. A yellow, sticky paste, with a faint pleasant taste that then sets on the teeth.
Fluoride varnish prevents caries. Contact with enamel results in the formation of calcium fluoride on the tooth surface, providing a fluoride reservoir for protection against cariogenic acid attack.
Scientific studies have shown that fluoride varnish gives added protection to teeth against decay when used in addition to brushing teeth regularly with fluoride toothpaste and a balanced diet.
Some children may be taking fluoride drops or tablets. These should not be taken for two days after the fluoride application. After that, continue as directed.

What is a dental impression?
A dental impression is a mould taken of the teeth and mouth. These are then cast up within a laboratory setting to create a replica of your teeth and soft tissue.
They are taken by mixing materials into a soft putty which are then placed into a dental impression tray which is designed to fit over your dental arch.
This is a very simple procedure which only takes a few minutes.
You can see the process demonstrated by our lovely associate Maria in the attached film.

March 2021 Update from the Practice Principal
I would like to update you on our progress in providing dental services. In January 2021, we made a collective decision in the dental surgery to try and see more patients for routine dental care; having finally got a good flow of PPE in place, vaccinations for the dental team and the start of vaccination roll out for our patients.
Unfortunately, our waiting rooms are small, so to maintain social distancing we have designed a system where we ask you to stay in your car until the appointment time, but please telephone us to let us know that you are waiting outside. We are required to operate on a locked door policy and will admit you for your appointment only.
We are hoping with the expected relaxation of social distancing measures in June, that we can revert back to an open-door policy with waiting room facilities.
We are still having to rearrange many patient appointments due to social distancing and cross infection measures that are carried out between patients. We continue to invite those patients with genuine dental concerns to email the practice on [email protected]
We care for approximately 23,000 dental patients. We cannot see you all immediately, so please have patience.
I now turn to a subject that saddens me. My team, dentists and nurses alike, have worked throughout the pandemic. We have not had any rest or closed, being an Urgent Dental Care Centre from the start of the Covid Pandemic. The fear of treating patients for the dental team, during this period (who we have had to treat all as assumed covid positive) has been palpable at times and very stressful. We now have more rigorous infection prevention procedures, more difficult masks to wear during certain dental treatments, and in addition air change systems to run.
I now beg of you to be polite and understanding to my staff as we ask you covid questions, or ring to make/amend your appointments. My staff are tired, battered, but still trying to give an excellent service; but daily they receive abuse.
During the covid pandemic, because of our strict policies, South Cave Dental Surgery has not had to close for any deep cleans, our patients have been treated and our staff and patients have been kept safe. Please be kind and considerate to all my staff.
