Miniature Midland Wagon Works
I aim to design and build scale wagons, mainly focusing on 71/4" gauge and with time allowing 5" and 101/4" gauge. Wagon weathering on request.
A slow old job of threading some tie rods, well, definitely slow when you have 10 to do at once.
The painful job of building any private owner wagon is getting all the iron work painted black.
A random fun day yesterday with the brake van, the real random part was seeing a tortoise ๐ข walk up the garden. It's random because we don't own a tortoise!!!

As I love an arty farty shot, here's one just for laughs
Working on a 8 plank wagon at the minute, to make sure the tie rod will be in the right place I clamp up the corner pan nice and square to the curb rail and bolt a side strap to it, once I'm happy I drill the curb rail.
I'll then clamp both soul bars and curb rails together and drill through the lot. This will ensure everything is equal, and in theory, everything will be square. If not, I've got my measurements very wrong, lol.
As its not stopped chucking it down with rain for days now and I haven't quite finished with this yet to get an arty farty shot on the track, here is a kitchen table shot of my King Cole 7 plank, a little bit of touch up to do flip round and then weather it, happy so far with my Cricut stencils.
Hi all, while I've been waiting for parts from the laser cutters I treated myself to a desk top vinyl cutter, this is the first cut for my own coal wagon, these stencils will now get covered with transfer paper and mounted ready for painting, safe to say they have come out spot on.
Tinkering away in the workshop this evening, I've ended up finding my lamp bodies for my brake van, I'll be removing the handles from them as they didn't have handles on these two fixed side lamps.
Sorting through my in stock items and making a start on another 7 1/4" wagon, I was going to batch build 3 but as room in my workshop is a premium at the moment a batch will have to wait.
Hi all, as you may or may not know I took in a brake van as part exchange on a wagon build, my plan is to add some details to it to make it look more scale, looking through my books I've found what I'm looking to get as the end result, the 20t CLC "TOAD D" the bit I don't know yet is what colour they would of been painted, can anyone shed any light on the subject?
A big thanks to Chris The Yorkshire Wagon Company for helping me source a nice stack of wood for wagon building I have to do, all the correct width and height for soul bars, head stocks and frame centres, I can finally set to work on doing a frame for the co**se wagon and a couple of eight plankers, happy days.
I had a problem this morning with the wind blowing my unbraked stock about, so with a off cut from a wagon body I cut out a little chock, no more stock movements without my say so ๐
The view from inside the newly acquired brake van.
Today is checking and double checking details on this 8 plank wagon, sorry for the flash glare.
If you have not seen yet, our 7 1/4" buffer stocks are now available as long and short version, get in contact with either myself or Chris at The Yorkshire Wagon Company.

Quite some time ago Nick ordered some wheel castings from me to build a batch of 3 wagons, well I can report he has finished them and just order more wheels for the next lot of wagons, impressive don't you think? If you would like some split spoke wheel castings please get in touch via messenger or email.
Hi all, lathe news I'm running again kind of, a flush through with contact spray and air has helped no end, however there's still something in the barrel of the motor so it will have to come off and be split apart for an even better clean up.
If you haven't already seen thanks to Chris at the Yorkshire Wagon Company we will both be stocking the 7 1/4" webbed buffer stocks that he has developed and cast in white metal, price to be confirmed.
Hi all latest on my lathe motor, after lots of contact spray and more blowing through I now have white smoke, so I think my only option is to pull the pulley off and take it apart to see what's causing the issue.
Video of it running when the smoke starts, it takes about 20 seconds for smoke to appear, can't see any visible arcing either.
Hi all, so on the lathe motor issue, with it being so old finding a new one has proved to be a bit of a task, so with it off the lathe I've decided to have a look at the issue, first off it felt stiff to turn by hand.
What I've done it's pump some grease into the two grease ni***es either end of the shaft, that cured the stiffness, now just dealing with a bit of smoke while running, I've blown it through with the airline and quite a bit of dust and dirt has come out, any suggestions?
Hi all, I've put a new video out about the new drawing programme I'm using, take a look it's the best free download no two ways about it, I even drew it wrong so you can see how easy it is to rectify mistakes, enjoy.
Siemens Solid Edge for Model Engineering A basic from the start view of Siemens Solid Edge 2d programme, its a Free! download and in my view hands down the best I've ever used.
A new favourite photo, she clearly loves trains ๐
Not coal but you get the idea, flooring all finished on the Kings Cole wagon.
Got the wagons out in the sun and took the doggos for a spin, what a beautiful day.
I've been pondering over doing two of these in 7 1/4" just because the co**se wagon needs something to go with it, not only that I'm also currently drawing up a jinty too, now if I design this right I can sit one end while leaving the other end looking scale, wish me luck.
A new container body done this morning, screw heads still need finishing off flush and filling but you get the idea, time to nip to wilko for some blue paint.
Hi all, the latest on the 7 1/4" ride on bicycle van, the first buffer stem and spring fitted, a bit of a poor video but you get the idea, I'll do a longer video on this explaining the design soon.
You can just make it out my rough chalk lines before I paint on the lettering, I say it's rough as I'll rub bits out and redraw where I'm not happy.
