Brian Mathew's maiden speech this week.

15/07/2024

What an incredible first week both in Parliament and in the Constituency. I intend on being a hands on, hard working and highly visible MP for the people of Melksham and Devizes. 🔶🎉🔶

13/07/2024

Our new MP on his first week in Westminster and raising the case for Melksham hospital to be revived.

Melksham and Devizes MP, Brian Mathew has been sworn in as our Member of Parliament and has already raised the case for Melksham Hospital to be revived.

Brian said: “It was a whirlwind week getting to know my way around the parliamentary buildings, meeting officials and receiving some excellent induction on life and work as an MP. I aim to have an office and staff team set up as soon as possible, but meanwhile I’m busy responding to enquiries from constituents as best I can.

“My first priority has been to raise the case for the revival of Melksham Hospital. People have to travel miles to Bath or Swindon for routine tests, treatments and injuries that could be handled locally.

“I have written to the Secretary of State for Health, Wes Streeting, asking for a meeting about the hospital and also to the Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire Integrated Care Board, which manages our local NHS services. I am in contact with the local Friends of the hospital, and hope to meet with them soon.”

Sarah Gibson, our Wiltshire Councillor in Bradford on Avon South, with information on the old golf course site.

Old Golf Course:. There is quite rightly a lot of concern over activities on the Old Golf Course recently. As the Wiltshire Councillor for BoA South, I have spoken to the leader of Wiltshire Council, Richard Clewer, and followed up with an email to him. Cllr. Jack Vittles Bradford on Avon and Cllr. Tim Trimble and the local Focus team have also written to officers and to the leader.
We are waiting on a formal response but Cllr. Clewer assured me that no application has been received and that as things stand Wiltshire has the required 4 year land supply so an application on this site would be unsuccessful.

Great to hear that the road improvements around Christ Church School are soon to go ahead. Cllr Tim Trimble says, "I very much welcome these long awaited improvement works in the Berryfield Rd and Christ Church School area, which I have been pressing for for some time. They will deter vehicle numbers and speeds and significantly improve safety for residents, pupils and parents especially at the start and end of the school day. This work is jointly funded by the Town Council and Wiltshire Council’s Local Highways and Footpaths Improvement Group (LHFIG) and follows extensive consultation with the school and local residents." Tim Trimble, Town and Wiltshire Councillor, BoA North.

We will be carrying out work later this month to improve road safety and to deter through traffic on Berryfield Road in Bradford on Avon.

A temporary road closure will be in place from Monday 29 July to Friday 23 August.

All tactical voting sites agree. The Lib Dems are best placed to beat the Conservatives in Melksham and Devizes. But not only will you not get a Tory, you'll also have a hard working, local MP who will make sure you are represented in Parliament.

Really encouraging poll showing Libdems taking the lead in this constituency.

Today’s updated polls are showing there is just 0.6% between us and the Conservatives. If you want change in Melksham and Devizes the Lib Dems are the only party who can beat the conservatives here.

It's neck and neck in Melksham and Devizes but only the Liberal Democrats can beat the Conservatives here.

22/05/2024

It's time.

Time to elect fantastic Liberal Democrat MPs to champion their communities.

Time to change the system and give people real hope.

Time to smash the blue wall and kick out the Conservatives.

Time to deliver the fair deal the British people deserve.

Jack and Sam will do a great job for the town as Mayor and Deputy for the final year of this council's term of office.

06/05/2024

The Tories won the Police and Crime Commissioner whilst only securing 31% of the vote. 69% of voters cast their vote for the opposition. Yet because of our voting system the overwhelming majority of people who voted, DID NOT vote for the winner.

Voting for the political party you want to vote for should be a given but if we oppose the incumbent we often have to tactically vote in order to remove them.

A lot of the tactical voting sites are being updated with the new boundaries but you can look at Electoral Calculus to see that we are best placed in Melksham and Devizes to unseat the Conservative MP. It's tight but it's doable!

THREE big reasons to back me TODAY:

🎯 Restoring accessible community policing
🎯 Tackling anti-social behaviour and bringing in more funding to improve services for victims and divert young people from crime
🎯 Consulting with residents when decisions directly impact their local community

🗳️ Polls are open until 10pm today - your vote could be the one that makes the difference between more of the same with the Conservatives or fresh, innovative outside the box thinking with me!

Melksham is the biggest town in our new parliamentary constituency of Melksham and Devizes, so it's great to see the Lib Dems going from strength to strength there.

Lib Dems have won all four town council by-elections held over the last nine months in Melksham, and in this by-election, the Conservatives had no candidate, so Adrienne Westbrook was elected unopposed.

24/04/2024

Next week we can vote for a new Police and Crime Commissioner. Alan Hagger is the Lib Dem candidate and brings years of experience in police work.

Election day for a new Police and Crime Commissioner for Wiltshire is coming up, next Thursday May 2nd. Lib Dem candidate, Alan Hagger, has solid experience after ten years' work for the police and crime commissioner for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. He says "I know the system, and I know what is possible. Under my leadership, we developed highly effective services for victims of crime, repeat offenders, young people at risk of offending, and crime prevention initiatives." Continuing the work to make our town greener.

Today marks 5 years since the town council declared a Climate Emergency.

We believe that how we act and how we work is just as important as what we do – and our decisions and our actions at the town council are shaped by the climate crisis and the ecological emergency we are all facing.

Since 5 March 2019, we’ve been striving to become a greener and more conscientious town council.

In 2020, we declared an Ecological Emergency alongside the Climate Emergency.

And we’ve pledged to be carbon neutral by 2030.

There’s still lots to do – but you can find out about our journey so far by reading our Green Roadmap.
