It was great to be invited to give a presentation at Public Record Office Northern Ireland (PRONI), in conjunction with the Belfast Titanic Society. Although Belfast was a hive of activity, with scores of fans queuing for the Jonas Brothers (who were performing on the same evening just a quarter of a mile away), the lecture was well attended. The new images from reveal one thing for sure: is changing.

After 112 years at the bottom of the , the hostile ocean environment has taken a toll on TITANIC. Notably, a 15-foot section of port side railing from just aft of her iconic prow has fallen to the ocean floor.

From films to literature, TITANIC’s looming hull has become a staple in the story and imagery of the great liner. For decades, the bow was a testament to the resilience of her strength and pride. The drastic change in the celebrated image is a reminder that TITANIC is deteriorating, advancing our resolve to preserve her legacy.

I have seen it claimed that a 'rule of thumb' for the period c. 1912 was that a shipyard might see one worker die for every £100,000 that they spent on ship construction.

Is anyone aware of a contemporary source for this claim?
