California Watchtowers - Live at Edinburgh Blues Club 03/03/23 - Stoney Broke 10/12/2023

Anyone that has come to a Stoney Broke show in the last few years will know that, about 90% of the time, I finish with a rip roaring mash-up version of "California Watchtowers".

Combining "California Dreaming" and, a loose take on, Jimi Hendrix's version of "All Along The Watchtower" this has been the exclamation mark to finish the set.

I have been regularly asked when I'm going to record it (which I probably won't), and subsequently I've avoided sharing video versions of it to avoid being known solely for that at the expense of my own material.

But, the music industry is in a state of dissaray, so what is there to lose sharing it now?!

Kindly recorded and shared by Raymond Meyer at Voodoo Rooms with Edinburgh Blues Club in March 2023 as part of my support run with Wille and the Bandits.

Hope you're all having a great weekend.

One of my favourite songs to play, sing, and say that I've written. "Too Late" has been included in just about every set list since the day it was finished.

It also made it onto my recent EP which includes a live version recorded at

I know one or two have it as their favourite, but is it yours? Pop in the comments if it is.

If you want to listen again you can on Spotify, , or watch a live version on YouTube.

Happy Sunday to you all!

8 years ago today, looking very fresh faced, playing at Glasgow. Big props to my great pal for inviting me to play that night.

The guitar has stuck around but it's been a while since the shirt and waistcoat fitted!

Stoney Broke - I'll Be Gone / As The Crow Flies (live) - Honey Bee Blues Club Sheffield 05/11/2023

Remember, remember, the 28th of April 2019??

Well, dear I recently posted about the sad loss of Martin Bedford and his role with Honey Bee Blues Club. At the risk of sounding like a vain idiot, I was watching some of the live videos from that gig, and it seems only right to share one.

I love this for the improvised audience participation. I hope you do too!

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday!

Tonight I find myself joining hundreds of people paying tribute to Martin Bedford, who has sadly departed for the great gig in the sky.

Unlike many of those, I can't say I was exceptionally close to him (sadly) but he welcomed me to the with a warmth, and support, that brought out one of my best ever performances and stands as my only Sheffield gig to date. I can still just about remember his praise;

"I knew you'd 'bring it', and, boy, did you (possible swearword) bring it!"

My love for that show now means I have his poster framed in my studio, and the club sticker on my case.

COVID robbed me of my first attempt to return, poor scheduling by me another attempt, and a recent message exchange advised me he wasn't booking further ahead due to hospital visits. I wished him well. I'm sad that's the last exhange.

Sheffield music scene has lost a giant. Music in general is poorer for his loss. Just go and read some of the other posts. They say it far better than me.

Farewell, Mr Bedford.

Friday night was gig night back in Glasgow!

Packed tightly into QMU we were given a masterclass in effortless showmanship by who performed tracks by Deep Purple with an effortlessness that made you wonder if he even got out of second gear! The house was well and truly brought down with the encore of "Burn"!

Before that was a band I really dig, who smashed their support slot. Even better, it was great to chat to the band while they signed my LP. Can't wait to see them back for a full headline show.

Keep music live!

97 not out....can we make it a century?!

Playing the numbers games bores me, but I realise the music biz is moving in ways I've not always thrown myself into, but I'm 3 away from 100 subs on YouTube and I'd love it if y'all can help me get over the line and start the climb to 200!

Find my channel via the deets in the picture, or through my linktree. (Below and in my bio)

Thanks for all the support. I'm knocking on doors for next year, so we'll see who opens them!

24 hours ago we were loading into for the musical magic of and what a show it was! Superb musicianship, command of stage, and audience connection. I wish I was going to see it all again tonight!!

Massive props to for an excellent support slot. Hints of Allman Brothers, Thin Lizzy, and Bob Seger, and it f-in rocked!!

Magic night in No Mean City!

It does mean my demos list reads as some sort of calendar/to-do list!

Watching recent gigs I've noticed some very slight changes in sound, and recovery, so it's time to save what's left!

Live music should be loud. Infact, I blame circa 2001-ish at Glasgow Armadillo for doing the most damage!

If you google ‘Thea Gilmore net worth’ it says:
‘As of January 9th 2023, Thea Gilmore’s net worth is $5 Million.’

$5 Million!

It’s not.

Who knows where that figure comes from.

I am lucky though. I have a (mortgaged) roof over my head. I have a car (2015 Nissan). I have saved enough to know that if my boiler broke down, I could get about halfway to replacing it.. the rest would have to go on credit cards. I have no pension, no trust fund.

I’ve been a musician since 1996 and it has been a real privilege to be able to work at something that I love. I never take that for granted.

But the reality of my life is that I am a single mum of two with virtually no savings, no pension. I live month to month. Without my Patreon family, I would not be able to continue making music. I have thought, many times, about turning away from music for good.

Let's be clear: the music industry isn't what it once was. Streaming changed the game. It took albums from being potential profit-makers to costly marketing tools.

Recording, mixing, pressing, and promoting an album costs over £25,000. Spotify pays around £0.004 per stream. To break even on a £25,000 album, I'd need over 6 million streams. Physical media is dwindling, touring isn't what it once was.
I’m one of the lucky ones who can still just make touring work, but I am still fighting for my life in music. I know new artists who struggle to draw an audience despite having thousands of monthly Spotify listeners.

All this while music is becoming secondary to personal branding. More and more of an artists time is taken up with self marketing. The pressure to be marketers and influencers overshadowing the music itself. Though there’s still no income at the end of that rainbow.

It's not just about the money, though.
We need art. It is not a disposable commodity. It is at the very core of our humanity. It is the thread that binds us together.
We are storytellers, it’s how we make sense of our world. It is where God begins. It’s where science lives. It is the lifeblood of civilisation.
Artists deliver that medicine. We need our artists just as much as we need our doctors, scientists, teachers.

But gradually, stealthily, from generation to generation, we are eroding this core part of what makes us human.

My net worth??
It’s over 400 songs and countless human connections.
It’s thousands of gigs. Hours of building a tiny, temporary families each night.
It’s every note ever played, every word ever sung.

$5 million?
It’s so much more…

‘Life is short, the art long’ Hippocrates
‘Without art, the crudeness of reality would make the world unbearable.’ George Bernard Shaw
‘One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.’ Bob Marley

A while back I decided to try and use my pages to help try and support causes I believe in. Sometimes it's not always easy (I mean, you're here for the tunes, right??)

One area I really feel passionately about is breaking some of the stigma that surrounds mental health, especially given so many musicians I have been influenced by have lost their own personal battles.

On our night out in Zante I decided to rep my new tee. Fantastic quality, and design, and if it helps start a conversation along the way then it's a job well done.

Be well, you're doing great.

Happy 5th anniversary to my debut EP, my first official release as Stoney Broke, "If It Ain't Broke..." recorded at

I still love hearing the feedback for this from people discovering it for the first time.

Looking back on it, with my Eye Spy Critical Eye, it sounds rough, but full of the enthusiasm of things to come.

Now, I'm arguably playing and performing better than ever, so 2024 might see some exciting new chapters.

See you at the merch table

Just under two weeks until my gig at and a wee glance back at my past gigs.

For those what don't know, the BBC (no, not that lot) is held in Innerleithen. Innerleithen, as well as being fun to say, is only 28miles from bar and where I've had some great gigs. It's also only a leisurely 22miles from St Boswells where I recently played with Wille And The Bandits.

It would be great to see some familiar faces from both gigs, and also surrounding areas (that sounds familiar...)

Friday 1st September I'll be back at Borders Blues Club, Innerleithen, to kick proceedings off with Delta Geckos bringing their storming headline show.

Tickets are just a £5 (less than most high street coffee!) for a fantastic night of music and will be available direct from the club, on the door, or from The Hub, Innerleithen.

Tickets are hot, you don't want to miss this, so come join us!

See you there.

It's a given that whenever someone mentions getting a tattoo it'll be met with "but what will it look like when you're old?!"

Well... I am old! Around 20 years since I walked into a tattoo shop on my 18th birthday (and walked straight back out as they specialised in 1920s sailer tattoos) I made the leap and turned myself into a human Pinterest board!

As it's something that is totally up to personal choice I'd normally not really share, BUT I feel it'd be a huge disservice to the amazing tattoo skills of
