We are happy to add this response from Barry Town Council.
We would like to highlight that Barry Town Council is responsible for Merthyr Dyfan Cemetery and employs 11 staff spending £460,000 per annum (gross) to ensure that the Cemetery is well maintained and looked after. The Cemetery has been awarded both a Green Flag and a Green Flag Heritage award which highlights the history and high standards of service within the Cemetery. The Team works closely with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission to ensure maintenance and respectful tending to the war graves; the Commission also carries out tours to increase community understanding.
Despite the good intention and community spirit shown, the reason that the Council does not allow members of the public or other services to maintain the cemetery is due to levels of risk, insurance, health and safety, required training and PPE. You can get in touch with the Commission if you have concerns about the war graves or to volunteer.
