Great to see BBC showing working carers. 👏🏻 It's a very difficult juggle.

Catch parent carer Isobel talking on BBC News: East of England at 6.30pm tonight about how caring and working is so difficult. She said she wanted to talk about the issues on behalf of all the carers she knows in the same position.

Her son Logan had been diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder, ASD, ADHD, a heart condition, diabetes, asthma, sensory processing issues and anxiety. The eight-year-old needs round the clock care and his routine is so important. She had to give up her job as an administrator 3 years ago.

She said it was impossible to carry on work. She has to deal with so many appointments and communications between the school and medical team. Plus her son has never slept through the night because of his conditions and she found it hard to concentrate with the lack of sleep and if he's having a bad day she could be called in to pick him up at a moment's notice.

She told the BBC: "People don't understand what having a child with his level of needs is like. It's so much more than being just a parent. I gave up work as my child comes first."

Whilst everyone around us gets their lives back to normal, those caring for vulnerable relatives, whether in their home or within a care home setting are all too aware that Covid is still around and just as concerning as it was before, especially to our loved ones. I wanted to let you know that you are not forgotten by us. Whether you are still doing an element of shielding, are in a care home lockdown or just being extra vigilant around your loved ones....thank you, we support you. Here is a nice bunch of flowers to brighten your day.

Lovely to receive this in the post this morning from The Giftware Association

Welcome to the Carer’s Companion

When I was heavily pregnant with my son, I found my 95 year old grandmother laying on her bathroom floor after she fell in the morning. She had been there for six hours. A year later, she had another fall, but this one was more serious than the last and she sustained more severe injuries. On this occasion, like the others, an ambulance was called.

The ambulance crew were absolutely brilliant with her and brought us some calm to a highly pressured situation. The crew began asking questions that my nan didn’t understand fully and couldn’t hear because her hearing aids had fallen out. I felt immense guilt. Everything is fast paced and stressful and my mind was blank. Is this fall number 6 or is it 7 this year? When did she last have her checkup? What dosage is she on for her warfarin? I really wanted to get it right, especially the dosage. Getting it wrong could lead to the ambulance crew delivering the wrong dosage of medication which can lead to serious illness and even death. They could hear the doubt in my voice and decided not to proceed with any medication.

This is when I decided we needed something more formal. Something written. And not just a notebook either, because Nan would just see that as us keeping tabs on her! It had to be something formal yet friendly and recognised and endorsed by doctors and those in the care profession. That is when the Carer’s Companion was born.

I use it myself for my nan and I hope you find it useful for your loved ones too.
