It’s Parent Mental Health Awareness Day! PMHD is a day to encourage understanding and awareness of the importance of parent mental health and its potential impact on the whole family system. We all know it can be hard being a parent and it is easy for mums and dads to overlook their own mental health as they juggle daily tasks. And when you forget about yourself, it’s easy to feel down, stressed and burned out. Remember to breath and take time for yourself.

Quick tip: start your day with a glass of water and do some breathing exercises.

Today is National Hug Day! National Hug Day is to encourage everyone to hug family and friends more often.

Have you ever thought of your friends and family to be part of your support network? They can help you with the struggles you face in life such as maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Having a strong support network can make all the difference when carrying a lot of mental strain on your shoulders. Most people will assume that you are coping and doing okay unless you ask for help directly. So, start a conversation with others who can help, as well as your family. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness – it shows that you know when you need help.

And don’t forget to remind the people around you that you love and appreciate them!

What is Wellness? Wellness not only mean your physical health but also your emotional, mental, social, environmental and spiritual wellness. What does each of these mean to you?

1. Physical Wellness is arming your body with the right kind of exercise, food, and sleep. Did you know adults should be sleeping 7 or more hours a night but more than 35% of people in Scotland get less than 6 hours a night.

2. Emotional Wellness is being aware of and understanding our feelings, as well as knowing how to express them. You might not realise it but your emotional wellbeing might also be impacting others in both a positive and negative way. Talking to others about how you feel can help you in the long term and allow you to get any support you may need.

3. Mental Wellness is like emotional wellness, your mental health and wellbeing is important and should always be considered. Allow yourself to rest after a stressful day, week, or even year. Remember to take breaks from work and/or family. Even a few hours just to decompress can be beneficial. Picking up new skills and hobbies can help keep your brain active and even boost your confidence.

4. Environmental Wellness is especially important. You might not know it, but your environment plays a big part in your wellbeing. Your environment can seriously influence your behaviour. From a messy room, wrong lighting, even having your furniture in the wrong place can really mess up your mood. Current climate concerns also can contribute to personal wellbeing and knowing what changes to make can help with that.

5. Spiritual Wellness is having a set of values, morals, beliefs, and principles in which provide a sense of meaning to life. Being able to self-reflect and find yourself can be a big part of you as a person. Knowing how to set yourself boundaries and understanding we cannot control every aspect of life.

6. Social Wellness is essential as humans are social creatures. We struggle to live in isolation, even those who prefer to be introverted still have the need to socialise and be around others occasionally. Connecting and engaging with others in our communities in a meaningful way is a basic human behaviour that a lot of us do without even realising.

Dry January is the UK's one-month alcohol-free challenge. Dry January has become a popular way to kick off the new year. It allows you to re-evaluate your relationship with alcohol and recuperate from any excess drinking over the holidays—all while feeling incredibly refreshed with and a great way to save money too.

There are many reasons to be careful about the amount of alcohol you drink. Health is one of these things but so is the number of calories in each alcoholic drink and mixer.

Both men and women are advised to drink no more than 14 units of alcohol a week to keep the risks to their health low. Current recommendations also suggest that it's safer and healthier to spread out your drinking over at least 3 days in a week. If you are looking to reduce your alcohol intake, a good way to do this is having several alcohol free days each week.

Is 2022 going to be the year you lead a healthier lifestyle? Will you make the changes you need? Here are a few tips to kickstart your knowledge.

1. Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated. Water helps you get rid of waste from your body, as well as help burn necessary fat while exercising.

2. Try limiting your intake of fatty and sugary foods. Try eating smaller portions as well as meals high in protein and fibre. Try a more varied, balanced diet rather than having excessive amounts of vegetables.

3. To make sure you have sufficient levels of nutrients, taking vitamin supplements can ensure your body has all it needs.

4. Regular exercise will ensure you keep physically fit, going for a daily walk will keep you active. If you’d like more of a challenge getting a membership for a gym could be a step in the right direction.

5. Avoid going overboard with alcohol. Alcohol is damaging to the body over the recommended 14 units per week. If you exceed this, you will be harming yourself and adding excess calories to your diet.

If you would like to start your own journey to better health, get yourself a ticket to the Wellness Weight Programme which is taking place digitally in January 2022.

Do you have a healthy relationship with Alcohol?

It’s Alcohol Awareness Week and a chance for the UK to get thinking about drinking.

Research shows that many of us have found ourselves drinking more to deal with feelings of loneliness and isolation during the pandemic.

There are many reasons to be careful about the amount of alcohol you drink. Health is one of these but so is the number of calories in alcoholic drinks and mixers.

The Wellness Weight programme takes place virtually on the 14th and 15th January 2022, we are excited to jump start your journey to a healthier lifestyle.

So, what can you expect on part two of this journey?

A personalised, person-centred outcome with emphasis on your weight and health.

We will use non-stigmatised language to make you feel confident and supported throughout the journey.

We will arm you with tools to continue your positive changes to your lifestyle to achieve success.

So, what does the itinerary consist of?

Session 2 3 hours

Look at the ‘future you’ and the goals you are working towards. Break down your goals to make them manageable and set targets for yourself so the process doesn’t feel daunting but instead exciting and something to look forward to achieving. You will also be looking into what support mechanisms you can use to your advantage at home.

Explore your energy balance and how we can use some tools to help increase physical activity levels as well as consider small steps to decrease the energy we are taking in by looking into the importance of healthy eating. We’ll look at the calorie contents of different food groups and you can expect an activity quiz to test your knowledge. (Definitely not as scary as it sounds)

Recap, review and refine your future goals. Discuss what success for you will look like, acknowledge what bumps you may come across in your journey and how to give yourself praise for the positives.

If the Wellness Weight Programme sounds like the right journey for you after getting a better understanding of the structure of the course, purchase your early bird ticket now!
