Sarah Macdonald - J S Bach Goldberg Variations 24/05/2024

Today's the day! We are delighted to release Sarah MacDonald's beautiful new recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations, recorded in Ely Cathedral on the Cathedral's own recent Steinway D. The Cathedral's luminous and radiant acoustic adds a dimension not usually found in recordings on the piano.

The product of the Covid pandemic motivating Sarah to learn, perform and record this major work, it is accompanied by her written notes on each variation in the form of diarised entries, following her personal journey through the musical, medical, professional, and social challenges that occurred over time, as the lives of us all adapted in response to Covid 19. The entries are personal, self-effacing, and include a healthy dose of humour, illustrated with examples of her talent as a keen amateur photographer.

Released today: 'A Year at Newcastle' - the first recording of the re-vitalised Newcastle Cathedral Choir under their Director, Ian Roberts, who was appointed in 2016, and has taken the choir to new heights.

Includes a number of first recordings. ‘Three Grace Anthems’ by Alan Gray (1885–1935). Recently rediscovered and newly-edited by a member of the choir, Matthew McCullough, each of the pieces is an absolute gem of a capella choral writing.

'Ubi caritas', by the Cathedral's Assistant Director of Music and organist for this recording, Kris Thomsett, is a radiant, multi-part setting, destined to enter the standard cathedral repertoire for Maundy Thursday.

William Drakett’s Evening Canticles from ‘The Wells Service’ were written for Matthew Owens and the Lay Clerks and Choral Scholars of Wells Cathedral Choir. Taking plainsong tones as a starting point, Drakett writes masterfully and sympathetically, exploiting the luminous and resonant qualities of the choir’s lower voices.
