What is an ingrown hair?

An ingrown hair is a hair that curls and grows back into the skin with its tip, causing inflammation. It's also known as pseudofolliculitis. Ingrown hairs are more common among people with very curly hair. Most ingrown hairs happen in the beard area on men and the bikini or groin area on women.

What causes an ingrown hair?

Ingrown hair is a common condition. It occurs when the far end of a hair grows back into the skin and causes an inflammatory reaction. Shaving, waxing, or plucking hairs can cause this condition.

What are the symptoms of an ingrown hair?

The most common symptom of an ingrown hair is redness and inflammation of the skin. This is followed by pus formation. If left untreated, or allowed to happen repeatedly, permanent scarring can occur. But each person may experience symptoms differently. The symptoms of an ingrown hair may seem like other skin conditions. Always talk with your healthcare provider for a diagnosis.

How is an ingrown hair treated?

An ingrown hair often heals on its own. But for chronic ingrown hairs, treatment may include:

• Letting the hair grow longer before shaving it

• Not shaving the area in the future. If you must trim the hair, use a clipper not a razor. Or try not to shave as closely.

• Removing the hair permanently through electrolysis.

Corneotherapy takes the science of cosmeceuticals one step further. It could be argued that corneotherapy is the skin care concept of the future, where science meets beauty linking dermatology and cosmetics.

An understanding of the role of the stratum corneum is key to the principles of corneotherapy. Essentially skin cannot be corrected if the stratum corneum is not in homeostasis. Many clinicians use treatments on their clients without first ascertaining the level of cellular damage or the condition of the bi-layers of the skin. This can result in expensive, repeat treatments that do not gain the desired results or may even fail completely.

Corneotherapy approaches skin care differently.  Before any treatment or products are prescribed, a thorough examination of the condition of the bi-layers of the skin is undertaken with the aim to not upset the acid mantle, but rather give it what it needs to maintain harmony.

Corneotherapy is a remedial skin treatment methodology with its core principle being the repair and maintenance of the skin barrier. Signs to look out for include a mole that's:

getting bigger

The ABCDE checklist should help you tell the difference between a normal mole and a melanoma:

Asymmetrical – melanomas usually have 2 very different halves and are an irregular shape

Border – melanomas usually have a notched or ragged border

Colours – melanomas will usually be a mix of 2 or more colours

Diameter – most melanomas are usually larger than 6mm in diameter

Enlargement or elevation – a mole that changes size over time is more likely to be a melanoma

Melanoma can appear anywhere on your body, but they most commonly appear on the back in men and on the legs in women.
It can also develop underneath a nail, on the sole of the foot, in the mouth or in the ge***al area, but these types of melanoma are rare.
