Happy Birthday 🎶🎶to Denbigh Library - 35 years today since opening in this fantastic historical building!

Diolch i bawb am eu cyfraniad gwaith celf i Gystadleuaeth Ffolio Cyntaf Shakespeare Llyfrgelloedd Cymru. Roedd yr holl geisiadau a dderbyniwyd yn dangos gwybodaeth am ddramâu Shakespeare, syniadau artistig a chreadigol diddorol a dehongliadau gwahanol.

Aseswyd y ceisiadau gan Lyfrgellwyr oedd yn cynrychioli Llyfrgelloedd Cyhoeddus Cymru a Chymdeithas y Prif Lyfrgellwyr ac o Lyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru yn Aberystwyth, ac mae'n bleser mawr gennym enwebu'r ceisiadau buddugol isod. Byddwn yn cyflwyno copi i'r enillwyr o'r argraffiad plant darluniadol cyntaf erioed o First Folio William Shakespeare, a gyhoeddwyd i ddathlu ei 400 mlwyddiant yn 2023.

Thank you for all the art work entries into the Welsh Libraries Shakespeare First Folio Competition. All the entries received demonstrated knowledge of Shakesperae's plays, interesting artistic and creative ideas and different interpretations.

Entries were assessed by Librarians representing Welsh Public Libraries and the Society of Chief Librarians and from the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth, and it's with great pleasure that we announce the winning entries below. The winners will be presented with a copy of the first-ever illustrated children's edition of William Shakespeare's First Folio, published to celebrate its 400th anniversary in 2023.

Mae Llyfrgell y Rhyl yn gyffrous i fod yn gweithio ar brosiect gyda'r artist lleol Nick Davies i helpu i ddatblygu eu casgliad o lyfrau celf. Enw’r prosiect yw ‘Critical Mass’ a phob mis mae’n rhoi llyfr i’r llyfrgell - dyma ychwanegiad mis Awst.

“ Mae’r llyfr celf nesaf yn y gyfres ‘Critical Mass’ rwy’n ei ddatblygu gyda Llyfrgell y Rhyl gan Ryan Gander a aned yng Nghaer a’i ffrind Jonathan P Watts.

Teitl y llyfr yw ‘The Annotated Reader’ ac fel y mae Ryan a Jonathan yn ei ddisgrifio, mae’n “gyhoeddiad-fel-arddangosfa ac arddangosfa-fel-cyhoeddiad sy’n cynnwys ymatebion a sylwadau 281 o bersonoliaethau creadigol ar ddarn penodol o ysgrifennu.” Yn y bôn, penderfynodd y golygyddion fynd at 281 o artistiaid a phobl greadigol, gan ofyn y cwestiwn iddynt “dychmygwch eich bod wedi methu’r trên olaf. “Oes yna un darn o ysgrifennu y byddech chi ei eisiau gyda chi fel cwmni?””

Y canlyniad yw crynodeb o dudalennau anodedig o ystod eang o lenyddiaeth gan rai creadigol gwych. Roeddwn i’n meddwl bod ei chwarëusrwydd a’r gallu i bori yn crynhoi’r hyn rydw i eisiau i ‘Critical Mass’ ei gyfleu.

Mae ‘Critical Mass 2024’ yn waith celf gymdeithasol rwy’n gweithio arno gyda Llyfrgelloedd Sir Ddinbych lle rwy’n helpu i ddatblygu casgliad llyfrau celf Llyfrgell y Rhyl. Bob mis mae llyfr celf newydd yn cael ei ychwanegu at yr arlwy.”

Rhyl Library are excited to be working on a project with local artist Nick Davies to help develop their collection of art books. The project is called Critical Mass and each month he is donating a book to the library – this is August’s addition.

“ The next art book in the ‘Critical Mass’ series that I’m developing with Rhyl Library is by Chester born Ryan Gander and his friend Jonathan P Watts.

It’s called The Annotated Reader and as Ryan and Jonathan describe it, it is a “publication-as-exhibition and exhibition-as-publication featuring 281 creative personalities’ responses and remarks on a chosen piece of writing.” In essence, the editors decided to approach 281 artists and creatives, asking them the question “imagine you’ve missed the last train. “Is there one piece of writing that you would want with you for company in the small hours?””

The result is a compendium of annotated pages from a vast range of literature from some brilliant creatives. I thought its playfulness and dip-in-ability summed up what I want ‘Critical Mass’ to be about.

Critical Mass, 2024 - ongoing, is a social artwork I’m working on with Denbighshire Libraries where I am helping develop the art book collection of Rhyl Library. Each month a new art book is added to the offering.”

☀️📸 Here are some pictures from the exhibition of the 'We do like to be beside the seaside' Project at Prestatyn Library last week. The project is based on some of the well known JT Burrows photo collection focussing on the Seaside resort of Prestatyn. ☀️📸

The event was very well attended and we look forward to hosting Heather and the collection again this Friday, 10:30-12:30. Pop along to see for yourself!
