Dog first aid certified๐พ
Even though I am a student veterinary nurse who is already trained in first aid, the thought of needing to perform it outside of the practice without the support of my veterinary colleagues can be daunting. So I completed the course to perfect my CPR technique, and enable myself to feel more prepared, should an event arise in which I need to perform first aid on your pet.
I would highly recommended this course to any pet owners as you never know when an accident may happen and your quick actions could save a life! Course ran by Dog First Aid West Berkshire and Hampshire
Respect to all those service dogs doing an amazing job in the most difficult of circumstances
Absolutely tragic ๐ข RIP sweet boy
๐๐ขWith the families permission, I am posting this picture of beautiful Kilo who lost his life in a tragic and horrific accident yesterday in Jack Kane Centre after choking on his ball.
The family are trying to find the amazing lady who was with Lewis, Kilos owner, at the time of the incident and who tried to help him.
I know I've bn tagged but I am NOT the lady who helped Lewis... I only helped with collecting Kilo and taking him to rest in peace at the Vets, so pls share to find the lovely lady who helped Lewis.
Lewis is still in hospital and has damage to his hands from trying to save the life of his much loved pet. Kilo didn't run off as Police initially told me. He was with Lewis the whole time and passed away next to him but Lewis had to be taken away in an ambulance.
Let's pls send condolences and well wishes to Lewis to recover both physically and mentally from this awful incident.
RIP Kilo. Run free at Rainbow Bridge ๐ข๐๐๐พ

Do not risk leaving your dog unattended outside a polling station, or anywhere else for that matter!
With temperatures soaring in parts of the UK this week, this is a useful guide. It is a guide only, every dog is different - age, breed, weight and general health can all make a difference. Itโs really important to know your own dog and to be able to spot the EARLY signs of overheating and start active cooling immediately! If in doubt, air on the side of caution and always consult your vet if you have any concerns! ๐ถ ๐ ๐ ๐ฅต

Blue-green algae are most commonly found in non-flowing fresh water such as lakes or ponds during the warm weather but can also occur at other times of the year. They can float on the surface of the water or be bottom dwelling.
Exposures in animals usually occur when they drink from water bodies where the algae have bloomed. Dogs are often affected when they swim in infested water bodies or groom themselves afterwards.
Although not all species are toxic, many blue-green algae produce toxins that can have effects on different body systems. Clinical signs therefore vary depending on the toxin(s) involved, but can include gastrointestinal signs, liver failure and neurological signs.
If you know or suspect that your pet has come into contact with blue-green algae, we recommend that you seek veterinary treatment as soon as possible. Veterinary professionals can call VPIS on 0207 3055 055.
Itโs adder season ๐๐ป
๐ Adders ๐
As the weather begins to warm, we have noticed an increase in calls regarding adder bites.
The adder (Vipera berus berus) is the only venomous snake native to the UK, and is also found across northern Europe. It is a protected species in the UK. Adders are most commonly, but not exclusively, found on dry, sandy heaths, sand dunes, rocky hillsides, moorlands and woodland edges. The clinical signs of an adder bite can include rapid and progressive swelling around the bite site, pain, lethargy, vomiting, bruising, bleeding and collapse.
What should you do if your pet has been bitten by an adder?
โDo not panic.
โDo not interfere with the bite.
โDo not apply a tourniquet.
โDo not attempt to touch or catch the snake.
โDo not kill the snake โ it is a protected species.
โIf practical, carry your dog to your car and go to your veterinary surgeon - do not delay seeking advice even if your pet is well as things can change quickly.
Adders are not aggressive and generally only bite when provoked. They hibernate in the winter and as a result most bites occur in the summer. Pets are frequently bitten on the leg, head or neck. If your pet has been bitten by an adder (even if you did not see the snake or are not sure what happened) โ contact your vet immediately. Your vet will examine your pet to determine the location of the bite and extent of the swelling.
Veterinary professionals can call us any time on 02073 055 055 if required for assistance with managing cases of adder bites. We also hold a list of antivenom stockists across the UK. Please note that antivenom is not indicated in all cases.
TOP TIP TUESDAY - HOW TO USE A TICK TWISTER โ
Do NOT DELAY removing the tick. Prompt removal reduces the risk of Lyme disease.
Remember to disinfect the bite area and wash your hands thoroughly.
โ๏ธ BEWARE OF MISINFORMATION ONLINE โ๏ธ
DO NOT do any of the following:
โข burn the tick
โข smother the tick in Vaseline
โข rub around it with a cotton bud
โข squeeze the tick
โข stick tape over it
โข try to pull it out with ordinary eyebrow tweezers
If you do anything to it while it is attached and feeding other than removing it as described above you will be distressing the feeding tick which will make it more likely to regurgitate tick born diseases such as Lyme Disease and bacteria into the dogs body.
