What Live-In Care Is (and Isn't!) - A Quick Guide

Ever wondered exactly what live-in care involves?

Let’s clear up a few things, in a fun way.

What Live-In Care IS:

👉 A Full-Time Helping Hand: Imagine having someone trustworthy who lives with your elderly or frail family member, offering support day and night. Whether it’s help with meals, personal care, or just getting out of bed, they’re there to assist!

👉 Personalised Attention: It's like having a personal assistant for healthcare needs, tailored exactly to your family member's preferences and routines.

👉 Companionship: More than just care, it’s about having a friend at home to share tea, stories and favourite TV shows. No more feeling lonely!

What Live-In Care ISN'T:

⛔️ A 24/7 Workhorse: Our carers are superheroes, but they’re also humans! They need their own time to rest and recharge to be their best for your loved one.

⛔️ A Replacement Family: While live-in carers provide great company and emotional support, the unique love and bonds of family are irreplaceable. We’re just here to add to the circle of care!

⛔️A Cleaning & Shopping Service: Sure, care and support is a big part of what they do, but live-in carers are not full-time cleaners, or an Ocado replacement service!

Looking for a compassionate, round-the-clock care solution that feels like family?

Live-in care might just be what you need!

Reach out to us at Sarah’s Carers to explore how we can bring peace of mind and heartfelt care into your home. 💕

I know the care team do amazing things every day. Being sent this feedback from a client just shows how much they are appreciated and valued.

"From the start I have been incredibly impressed at their professionalism, efficiency, knowledge, patience, reassurance, care and compassion, and above all what I would call person-centred care. All they do is focus on me and my needs and they are also working alongside District Nurses 2 days a week, with the District Nurses being consistently impressed at the level of complementary care and support that the carers provide, resulting in a service that makes me feel reassured and fully supported.
There have been a couple of unexpected medical incidents recently associated with my illness and they have responded well above the ‘call of duty’ with calmness and efficiency in dealing with them. I am extremely grateful for their ability, therefore, to work and respond so well under pressure.
I cannot thank the service enough as it has made a real difference to my sense of well-being. Most commendable"

After 40 years of nursing still gives me a thrill to be part of a team that helps others.

Deciding on which type of care to invest in for elderly or frail family members can be tricky.

It's easy to assume a few hours of domiciliary care will do, but often, their needs may require the more comprehensive support live-in care offers.

In many cases those few hours of additional support, companionship and care are sufficient to really help improve the quality and comfort of somebody's day.

Avoid the pitfalls of under or overestimating care needs and the impact of frailty.

Speak to experts, get an assessment, and make an informed decision.

The right choice today can ensure your family member receives the precise support they need, giving you peace of mind.

Understanding the care needs of an elderly or frail family member can be quite complex.

Recognising the early indicators of frailty, which often slip under the radar, is key.

These signs can be subtle - maybe you've noticed they're not moving around as easily, their appetite isn't what it used to be, or perhaps they've lost a bit of their usual spark.

These early signs are more than just age-related changes; they're signals that they might need additional support to maintain their quality of life and independence.

But how can you be sure?

Once you've noticed these changes, how do you figure out what level of care they need?

Frailty can show itself in both physical and emotional forms. It could be a decrease in social interactions or a shift in daily routines. Recognising these signs is the first step towards providing the support your family member needs.

Understanding the degree of frailty is key to ensuring your family member gets the appropriate level of care. It might seem overwhelming, but you don't have to navigate this alone. We've created the Frailty Spiral Checklist to help you identify these signs early on.

This free guide is a straightforward tool designed to help you spot the early warning signs of frailty, empowering you to make informed decisions about the support and professional care your family member might need.

We recently had the incredible opportunity to host the Virtual Dementia Tour at our offices in Woodbridge, Suffolk, and what an insightful experience it was for our care teams.

The Virtual Dementia Tour is a unique and powerful training tool designed for anyone who interacts with individuals living with dementia – from care staff and nurses to families and beyond. With over 350,000 people receiving this training annually, we knew it was something we wanted to bring to our team.

This scientifically and medically proven method offers those with a healthy brain an experience of what living with dementia might feel like. By stepping into the world of a person with dementia, our team gained invaluable insights into making meaningful changes in both practice and environment to enhance the lives of those we care for.

Why did we invest in this?

It's really important to us to provide not just care, but understanding, empathy, and support that truly make a difference in the lives of individuals with dementia and their families.

This experience has equipped our team with even deeper insights into the challenges faced by those with dementia, enabling us to refine our Live-in and Domiciliary care services further.

We're so proud of this step to better support our team and the families we work with. It's initiatives like these that deepen our understanding and enhance our ability to care, connect, and make a positive impact in the lives of those we provide support to.

If you have an elderly or frail family member that might be showing signs of dementia, or signs that they may be in need additional support, please give our team a call on 01394 824053.

We currently have capacity within our care team and we'd love to help.

How can we better support our elderly or frail family members, especially as we get to grips with the complexities of their changing needs?

One of the first steps in making sure they receive the care they deserve is recognising the early signs of frailty.

But how do we spot these signs, and more importantly, how do we determine the right level of care based on their frailty score?

Frailty isn't always obvious. It can manifest in subtle ways - perhaps a slight decrease in mobility, changes in appetite, or even shifts in confidence.

It's these early warning signs that, if identified, can make a significant difference in the quality of life and the level of independence your elderly or frail family member can maintain.

Identifying when a family member is on the frailty spiral is essential. This involves observing not just physical changes, but also emotional and mental shifts.

Are they engaging less in conversations? Is there a noticeable change in their routine? These are critical questions that can help us gauge where they are on the frailty spiral.

Ensuring your elderly or frail family member receives the right level of care begins with understanding their current level of frailty.

This might seem daunting, but it doesn't have to be guesswork.

To assist you, we've developed a valuable resource: the Frailty Spiral Checklist.

This free guide is designed to be a quick and straightforward tool to help you spot the key signs of frailty.

By identifying the key signs and understanding their implications, you can make informed decisions about the level of support and professional care needed.

We're also here to support you in making these important decisions with confidence and compassion.

Have you considered the value of introducing care early?

If you have an elderly or frail relative and you’re unsure about when to start exploring care options, this message is for you.

The decision to introduce care, especially live-in care, at an early stage can be pivotal. I’ve seen first hand how early intervention can profoundly impact the well-being of elderly or frail family members.

Have you started to notice small changes?

Maybe you’ve spotted a slight decline in mobility, a momentary lapse in memory, or a change in appetite. These signs, often subtle, are crucial indicators that extra support could be beneficial.

With live-in care, the support is comprehensive. It's not just about assisting with daily tasks; it's about ensuring that nutrition, hydration, and mobility are actively managed to maintain physical wellbeing.

But perhaps more importantly, it's about companionship – someone to share stories with, to laugh with, and to offer a comforting presence. This emotional support is invaluable for mental health and overall happiness.

Early support and care can have a profound effect on slowing down certain frailties.

I founded Sarah's Carers with a vision to offer care that’s not just professional but empathetic and nurturing. We understand that your family's journey is unique, and our approach is tailored to meet your individual needs.

We’re now actively welcoming new clients and would love to have a conversation about how we can support you and your family.

Reach out to us, and let’s explore together how introducing care services early, can bring comfort, support, and peace of mind to you and your family members.

You can contact our amazing team at [email protected] or by calling 01394 824053.

Our team have been hard at work onboarding and nurturing a fantastic group of qualified and professional local Carers.

If you’re currently buying Domiciliary Care and have been thinking about upgrading to Live-in Care, then we’re ready to support you.

If you’re thinking about a care home, but know you’re frail or elderly relative would prefer to stay in their own home, surrounded by their memories and possessions, then Live-in Care is a great option for them.

If you’d like to explore our Live-in Care services and discuss your specific needs, please get in touch with our team on 01394 824053.

The more notice we have, the more time we have to pair you with the Carer that meets all of your needs.

This is something that is never lost on us. The Impact of professional care on family dynamics

When an elderly or frail relative starts needing extra care and support, it can lead to significant changes within a family’s dynamic.

Responsibilities might shift, roles may change, and the relationship between family members can become complex and trigger different emotions. Professional care services, whether it's Live-in or regular home visits (domiciliary), can bring a sense of relief and stability to these often tricky situations.

One of the most noticeable impacts of retaining a professional care provider is the reduction of stress and anxiety among family members.

When a professional carer steps in, it alleviates the pressure on family members to constantly provide care themselves.

This can significantly reduce feelings of guilt or worry about not doing enough, and can also prevent burnout, a common issue in families where one member is predominantly responsible for providing care.

Having a professional care service can improve relationships within the family too. It’s important that family members can return to their original roles as sons, daughters, or spouses, rather than primary caregivers. This shift can allow for more quality, meaningful time together, based on love and companionship, rather than the duties of care.

It's important to note that introducing a care provider into the family dynamic can be a significant change and require an adjustment period. Open communication among all family members, and with the care provider, is essential to ensure that everyone's needs are met.

Time and again we see the positive impact of professional care on family dynamics. It can bring relief, improve relationships, introduce expertise, and contribute to the overall health and happiness of both the individual receiving care and their family members.

If you're considering care options for a relative, know that this decision can be a positive turning point for your entire family.

If this resonates with you and you have questions, or would like to learn more, please feel free to email our team at [email protected] or call 01394 824053

Are you, or a family member, getting close to having ‘that’ conversation about finding some external support and professional care for an elderly or frail relative?

For some people this can be a simple conversation. Perhaps it’s something you and your family have been planning for a while and now it’s just about taking that next step.

For others this can be an emotional and difficult decision.

How do you approach the subject? Are you worried about upsetting people? What if other members of your family disagree? Do you feel like you’re letting someone down?

The journey to making a decision about care can be very different for everyone. However, in our experience, the best way to start is by having open and honest conversations.

We’ve created a free video resource for you, in which our founder Sarah Seaman discusses the process and intricacies of having those conversations.

WATCH IT HERE: https://info.sarahscarers.com/difficult-conversations-optin

If the above sounds familiar, you are not alone.

So many of our clients say they wish they had been able to have those conversations earlier.

This is your opportunity to get started now.

We really hope this helps you and your family.
