This week we are thinking about memory!
On our ‘memory strategies’ post, we recommended using visual tools like task plans, mind maps, word maps and story planners. Here are examples of a task plan, a word map and a story planner, and you can find more information about how to use these on our website: www.childspeechbedfordshire.nhs.uk/information-and-advice/resources

This week we are thinking about Messy Play!
We learn lots when we use all our senses to explore and play including our touch, taste, smell, sight, and hearing. Messy play encourages vocabulary development of words like ‘squish’, ‘squelch’, ‘splat’, ‘gloop’, ‘squeeze’, ‘scoop’, ‘sprinkle’, ‘pour’ etc. Messy play can be difficult if your child is sensitive to texture so try firm or dry textures first like dry pasta, lentils, or twigs, moving towards wetter or looser textures like jelly or slime. have ideas on this video:

Mind your words is a FREE e-learning tool designed for professionals working with children and young people. The tool aims to improve understanding of children and young people who have both mental health needs (or social emotional and mental health needs) and communication difficulties. The online training highlights the links between mental health and communication and outlines how professionals can work together to remove communication barriers and help these children and young people achieve their potential.
