The Craft of the Novel by Colin Wilson is already available in paperback after more than 25 years out of print.
A title that elegantly combines technique and knowledge about one of the most beautiful and expressive forms of art. A wonderful read for both writers and spirits who aspire to nourish their minds.
In a time when we complain that the fleeting and the frivolous constantly demand our attention, this is a call, rather a whisper, to those who still seek true wisdom.
We have just published the Kindle version of The Craft of the Novel by Colin Wilson.
The Craft of the Novel is an emphatic praise to the ageless art of novel-writing, reaffirming its timeless principles even as the world around it shifts and morphs. The core principles he articulates in this seminal work retain their universality. The wisdom contained herein speaks to us all, writers or not, transcending time and technology. The craft of the novel, as Wilson sees it, is about holding a mirror up to the ‘face behind your face’, your ultimate face.
“Now when a young aspiring-writer settles down with a sheaf of paper and a pen, the question that confronts him is not simply ‘What shall I write?’, but ‘Who am I? What do I want to become?’ His purpose in writing is bound up with his sense of identity.”
It is exciting when a book awakens us from the state of robots, as Gary Lachman would say, and provokes a state of natural enthusiasm in us. Suddenly we feel that a whole world of ignored possibilities is presented with solid forcefulness before our eyes. That is the power of great novels, of great literature, of great philosophy.
Soon in paperback.
Dear conscious readers,
we have the pleasure to announce the publication on a new title by Colin Wilson, The Craft of the Novel.
This title doesn't belong to the Outsider Cycle. It shows his role as an existential critic. It was published for the first time in 1975 by Victor Gollancz Ltd and then by Ashgrove Press in 1990. This is the first edition in 33 years. And it contains a bright introduction by Colin Stanley, Colin Wilson's bibliographer.
For those interested in the art of writing a novel this book is a manual of inestimable value. Wilson points out the essential questions that any writer must ask themselves before starting to write. These questions are also crucial if one is willing to examine one's own life with honesty and courage.
Like all of Wilson's books, The Craft of the Novel is loaded with appealing knowledge and passion.
As Wilson says: The craft of the novel is about holding a mirror up to the ‘face behind your face’, your ultimate face.
Thank you Colin Stanley, bibliographer of Colin Wilson's work, (also a publisher and writer) for organizing the Third International Colin Wilson Conference. The conference will take place in Nottingham from September 1 to September 3.
This year apart from the great speakers, among whom will be Gary Lachman, Matthew Coniam, Simon Brighton, and Colin Stanley himself, (all of them experts on Wilson's work), we can attend the premiere of the of the Figgis/West documentary film:
Colin Wilson: his life & work. Part 1: The Outsider
Introduced by Jason Figgis and John West with a Q&A session afterwards.
As you already know Colin Wilson's Outsider Cycle titles are available at Aristeia Press after 30 years out of print. This conference and these titles are a great opportunity to immerse yourself in Wilson's universe, who is expanded at the same speed at the Universe itself.
