Lift up your head to the rising sun, Bahamaland. March on to glory, your bright banners waving high. See how the world marks the manner of your bearing.Pledge to excel through love and unity. Pressing onward, march together, to a common loftier goal. Steady sunward tho' the weather hide the wide and treacherous shoal. Lift up your head to the rising sun, Bahamaland,'til the road you've trod lead unto your God, March on Bahamaland. Happy Independence Day to my fellow Bahamians!

Back to Our Roots: Growing and Sharing Without Borders Networking Event 15/05/2023

Diverse communities have found a home in the UK for thousands of years, but the growing of traditional foods has remained scattered and isolated. Many vegetables and greens, such as okra and callaloo, require a warm climate, making them more difficult to grow in the UK context. They have become specialist imported items, often only available in big cities and at higher cost to both communities and climate. How can we better connect to grow more ourselves, both opening up access and reducing supply chains?

Led by Food Adventure with support from the Soil Association's Food For Life Get Togethers team, the session will opening with a panel discussion from speakers with a range of expertise on growing and community. We will move into an open discussion of challenges, best practices and the kind of network we need to put into place to strengthen this work.

The event is open to all, but we are keen to learn from and share with home gardeners, allotment growers, community gardener or farmers who are growing or wish to grow these types of greens and vegetables.

Indigenous women are the backbone of indigenous peoples’ communities and play a crucial role in the preservation and transmission of traditional ancestral knowledge. They have an integral collective and community role as carers of natural resources and keepers of scientific knowledge. Many indigenous women are also taking the lead in the defence of lands and territories and advocating for indigenous peoples’ collective rights worldwide.

Creation of Food Processing Businesses as a Means to Reduce Poverty in Cameroon: Considerations for Food Safety 09/06/2022

Agriculture is an important part of the rural economy
in sub-Saharan Africa; however, statistics for poverty
and underemployment in the region are highest in the
world. One of the support mechanisms for economic
growth are ministerial strategies to create and support
new small- and medium-sized enterprises that add
value to primary agricultural products through food
processing. Urbanization, the expansion of supermarkets,
and the demand for convenience food, present potential
opportunities for economic growth to these new food
processing businesses. Given the significant incidence of
foodborne illness in the region, this article will consider the
food safety challenges new food processing businesses in
sub-Saharan Africa will face. You can find the full article in Food Protection Trends.
