Health & Wellbeing Priority Research Area - H&W PRA
The H&W SRA is a University wide initiative at The Open University enabling early career researchers and academics to collaborate together
The Health & Wellbeing Strategic Research Area will cease from the end of today. It has been a wild several years especially the last 12 months. On looking back we've made some incredible progress relating to networking, grant funding, impact & collaborations. As part of the work, we conducted various seminar series online (even in a pre-pandemic world) & you can watch the recordings via the YouTube channel.
Thank you to everyone who has supported the SRA & to the contributors of the recordings
Here's ALL of the playlists from the SRA. Covering various topics from s*x, intimacy, to technology, co-production, working class academics, dementia, death & dying, health & wellbeing & gender critical feminism with the launch of the OU_GCRN.

About this event
The Tokyo Olympics in July and August foregrounded issues of s*x and gender Identity. Controversy over the inclusion of a trans woman, Laurel Hubbard, in the Women’s Super-Heavyweight division led to the announcement by the IOC that its own rules governing trans participation were ‘not fit for purpose’. At the same time, athletes with male DSDs, who were banned from the 400 – 1500 distances, competed with great success in the 200m. Whilst it is important to separate out questions of gender identity from questions of DSDs, both these events have led to some disarray in the field of sports regulation, and both sets of rules are likely to change.
What is going on? What ought the rules to look like? What are the prospects for fair competition in women’s sport?
Emma Hilton is in the Biology Department at the University of Manchester. She is co-author of the pathbreaking paper that led to a rethink on questions of transgender inclusion (Hilton and Lundberg, 2021)
Jon Pike is in the Philosophy Department at the Open University, and has acted as a consultant to WADA, the IOC and World Rugby (Pike, 2020).

Professor Alice Sullivan, who is Professor of Sociology in the Social Research Institute at UCL, is a quantitative social scientist who has expertise in using and working with large and very large quantitative datasets. In this video case Prof Sullivan discusses with Professor Jo Phoenix what ‘gender critical’ means, why she fought the ONS (Office for National Statistics) for retention of the female/male s*x category on the Census 2021 and some of the challenges she faced in doing so (7:25).
In the final part of the interview (approximately 18 minutes) both Profs discuss some of the chilling effect experienced by individuals who hold (or are thought to hold) gender critical beliefs in British Universities today and the relationship between activism, politics, politicking and knowledge production.

Professor Jo Phoenix interviews Dr Laura McGrath about how she conceptualises ‘gender criticality’ in the context of her research (approx. 1m30s – 14m), about how this is relevant to research – in this instance in relation to ‘detransitioning’ and ‘detransitioners’ [approx. 14m – 33m] and finally about her work on the writings of Dr Money who first coined the concept ‘gender’ [33m – end]
