Stephen Clarke Writer
I'm the author of "A Year in the M***e", "1000 Years of Annoying the French" and similar books. This is where I talk about projects, events and ideas
I've made a few short films about the that I'll be posting soon
The Château d'Hardelot has invited me back to talk about the 30th anniversary of the Channel Tunnel.
My talk is on May 2. More details to follow.
My introductory apology for the 90 minutes of gentle teasing that were to follow.
"Rosbif" is affectionately mocking French slang for a Brit.
Thanks again to the Château d'Hardelot for inviting me.
Thursday 4 April at 7pm I will be giving a talk (in French) on the Entente Cordiale at the Château d'Hardelot (aka le Centre Culturel de l'Entente Cordiale) near Calais.
It will be informative but not entirely serious, as history should be.
Btw big confusion: Paris and France aren't the m***e in the title.
I wanted to write a realistic antidote to the over-idealistic Year in Provence so looked for a word that was the opposite of sunny, olive-oil-soaked, peasant-heavy Provence.
M***e.
(Plus at the time there was a LOT of dog m***e in Paris)

20 years ago today A Year in the M***e was published.
Here are a few of the editions – sorry I don't have copies of all the translations.
Thanks to everyone who's read and/or published it – and its 6 sequels

Just went on French TV to suggest that Princess Kate's altered photo will probably not cause the downfall of the British monarchy.
BTW this photo has been photoshopped: in fact I have chestnut hair and do not wear glasses.
In July-August half a million tons of cereals travel down the Seine to Rouen. This year the river will be blocked for the Olympics. The Paris Olympic Committee's response: "change harvest times?" (Tell the sun to get hotter/cooler?)

Review for M***e at the Paris Olympics
The Président des Opérations Olympiques Parisiennes (P.O.O.P. for short) wrote to me about my novel M***e at the Paris Olympics.
"Monsieur, it would be out of the question for us to accept your book as official Olympic merchandise. It is in English and the Games are in France."
Excuses, excuses.

If you can't come along, just read the book : )

I have an article about my Paris neighbourhood in today's Scotsman newspaper.
(Right now only the Scots and Scandinavians could resist the Parisian cold)
"Highly Recommended" – M***e at the Paris Olympics gets a great review from France Today magazine.
"If making people laugh were an Olympic sport, Clarke would be a gold medallist."
FranceToday.com
I'm predicting a record number of French medal-winners at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The French are so good at pushing to the front of any queue that shoving their way into gold-medal position will feel like part of everyday Parisian life.
Start betting now.
Sunday 7 Jan at 8pm French time, I'll be in a documentary about (no joke) welsh rabbit or rarebit. In the north of France they call it "le welsh" and soak it in beer.
In "La F***e Histoire du Welsh" I play a mad history professor (myself) who sends some students back through time to investigate the origins of this Anglo-French delicacy.
Well yes, less documentary than dotty-mentary. The shoot was surreal. I haven't seen it yet, can't wait.
It's on the local channel, Wéo, which you can find here:
TNT, Canal 30
BBox, Canal 324
Orange, 356
Freebox, 914
SFR Numéricable, 487
Weirdly, M***e at the Paris Olympics gets a mention in an article about anti-drone systems to protect this summer's games. M***e as a defence system? Why not.

2024 marks 120 years since the Entente Cordiale was signed between Britain and France.
To commemorate this I've been invited to give a talk in April at the Centre Culturel de l'Entente Cordiale, the museum I curated in Hardelot. More details soon
Happy 2024 Facebook friends!
Nothing better on Christmas morning than a book-inspired chortling session. In the past I've done it to Douglas Adams, Stella Gibbons, Bob Mortimer.
This year why not give someone M***e at the Paris Olympics?
People ask me, how much in your M***e novels is autobiographical?
The answer is 64.3%.
(I had them tested).
If you’re in or near Fontainebleau you can get M***e at the Paris Olympics at Reelbooks, near the château
