The Connection Between Mindfulness and TinnitusTinnitus can lead to distress, anxiety, and depression for some individuals, as the constant perception of noise can be overwhelming and intrusive. Mindfulness offers a way to cultivate a different relationship with tinnitus by changing how one responds to it. Rather than trying to block out or resist the noise, mindfulness encourages individuals to observe it with curiosity and acceptance.
How Mindfulness can hel you with your Tinnitus
Reducing Stress and Anxiety:
1- Mindfulness techniques, such as deep breathing and body scanning, can help individuals relax their bodies and calm their minds. By reducing overall stress and anxiety levels, mindfulness may alleviate the emotional distress often associated with tinnitus.
2-Changing Perceptions: Instead of viewing tinnitus as a threat or a problem to be solved, mindfulness encourages individuals to see it as just another sensation in the body. This shift in perspective can lessen the emotional impact of tinnitus and reduce the distress it causes.
3-Improving Concentration: Tinnitus can sometimes interfere with concentration and focus. Mindfulness practices, which train the mind to focus on the present moment, can help individuals improve their ability to concentrate despite the presence of tinnitus.
4- Enhancing Emotional Regulation: Mindfulness teaches individuals to observe their thoughts and emotions without getting caught up in them. This skill, known as "meta-awareness," can help people with tinnitus respond to their symptoms with greater equanimity and less reactivity.
5- Promoting Acceptance: Acceptance is a key aspect of mindfulness. Instead of constantly fighting against tinnitus or wishing it would go away, mindfulness encourages individuals to accept it as part of their experience in the present moment. This acceptance can lead to greater peace of mind and well-being

These strategies will help to open your Eustachian tube, this is the tube which connects your middle ear to the back of your throat and helps to control the pressure inside the ear. 👇

Feeling the ear blocked while flying or in high altitudes is a common complaint. This blockage occasionally cause a temporarily pain.

🔹The pressure change happens to everyone, however some people are more prone to feel the blockage and the pain, you may feel it more if you have a cold or is congested.

This blockage feeling will improve as soon as the aeroplane is stable or landed. If the blockage takes longer to improve, try some painkillers to alleviate the pain and / or a decongestant. Try the Valsalva Manoeuvre.

Here are some tips to unblock your ears when taking off or landing;

- Suck sweets or chew chewing gun
- Try to yawn or open your mouth widely as if you were yawning.
- Try to sip some water, use a straw or sports bottle.
- Pinch your nose closed with your fingers and blow thorough your nose until you feel your ears “pop”( Valsalva Manoeuvre)
- For babies, try to feed them, or give a drink or the dummy

👉If the problem persists you may need to discuss with your GP for more treatment options!

Hyperacusis is defined as the intolerance to everyday sounds, which are perceived louder than normal that causes significant distress and impairment in social, occupational recreational and other day- to- day activities (Aazh et al, 2016).

Certain sounds can be distressing, upsetting or even painful, however, the negative emotion linked to these sounds can make them louder than they really are.
Hyperacusis is often associated with Tinnitus, both conditions share common pathophysiological mechanisms. People may have one or both conditions.

If you have hyperacusis or tinnitus, or both conditions, you need proper treatment as these conditions may affect your quality of life!

Earwax is a natural, normal protection mechanism of the ear and usually it will fall out on its own. It is formed by dead skin, dust and oil. 👇

It is a common and safe practice to use ear drops to soften the wax, this practice will not eliminate the wax, by becoming soft the wax tends to fall out on its own.

🔹If you do suffer with wax build-up don’t use cotton buds as the wax will be pushed in and leading to pain, or damage to the ear canal or eardrum. This is a common incident and can lead to permanent hearing loss.

There is no medical evidence proven that ear candles remove wax. It is not a safety practice and can burn your ear canal.

If you feel your ears are blocked seek an advised from a specialist, or a qualified professional to remove it effectively and in a safe way.

👉 Golden Tip: Lying your head to one side, using a dropper put 2 to 3 drops of medical olive,(almond or coconut) oil, before bed time for 5 days. Wait a few minutes to let the oil get through the ear canal. Then do the other side if you feel it is blocked.

✅ DO NOT USE EAR DROPS IF YOU HAVE A PERFORATION IN THE EARDRUM!

Hearing is a crucial sense to us humans; through out our hearing we gather information about the world, the surrounding sounds warn us of danger, an approaching car or someone on our back. Sounds allow us to interact with our environment and to communicate better.

If we do not hear well our communication is compromised, we lose important information, this may affect our relationship with family and friends, we become frustrated and we tend to withdraw from social situations.

We know how difficult it is not being able to hear properly, how daunting tinnitus/hyperacusis can be, and how being out of balance or suffering with vertigo can affect your mental health.

After 20 years working as a specialist audiologist/hearing therapist in the private and public service, we realised what was missing and how important it is having our clients/patients best interest at heart and additionally improving their quality of life, always following our core values; care, respect, commitment, efficient, competence, honesty and responsibility.

Thinking about all these aspects Hertz Audiology Rehab, a specialist and independent clinic was developed to deliver a personalised care for your ears, hearing and balance.
