I'm competing this weekend in a masters meet. Work, family and dodgy knees mean I'm not anywhere near where I'd like to be. You'll all have been in this position or will face it. How can you ensure that it isn't a negative experience?
1) Reset expectations. Don't go into the meet targeting PBs. The lack of preparation will undermine your confidence to meet those expectations and promote anxiety. It really is OK not to have performance goals (times) or outcome goals (position) in mind
2) Focus on the process. Consider all aspects of your meet from warming up and prep, to diet, effort, ex*****on etc and focus on a small number of key things. Importantly, evaluate your performance on these things too.
3) Choose to enjoy the meet. It is a choice. Freeing yourself from unrealistic expectations and focusing on the process will help you with this
If you go into a meet underprepared and take the right approach, you might just pleasantly surprise yourself and come out happy :-)
I've had a bit of a spike in likes, but I haven't posted much in a while. I wonder if anyone has any questions they'd like to be answered? Bear in mind that other page followers can read them!
