The Luing Cattle Society Ltd have recently announced their intention to provide all their members with free access to Signetâs services. As part of this new initiative the Luing Cattle Society will fund the recording costs of any paid-up Society member; effectively removing the financial barrier for herds to participate.
Extra data has been provided by the Society to support this work, including the provision of 50,000 pedigree records to strengthen the genetic evaluations and enhance Signetâs inbreeding software. This provides a fantastic opportunity for new breeders to get involved in weight recording, with cattle registered with the Society now appearing on the Signet database.
If you would like to get involved please email [email protected]
Hamilton Brothers are our final sponsors for 2023, they have supplied the majority of our machinery for many many years, from the occasional quad bike, right the way through to tractors and our top of the range forage wagon. They are always on hand for a phone call to talk us through breakdowns and repairs and parts are dispatched promptly and usually arrive next day to get us back up and running
Wildluing has been a true family project and what began as a dream and a few scribbled ideas during Covid became a finished reality at the start of 2023. Jack and Archie designed the suites and Emily and T***s hand picked all the interior finishes.
Jack quietly took over the old heifer shed and started building the basic frameworks, using local craftsmen and locally sourced building material it wasnât long before the skeletal frames started to take shape into things of beauty. What Jack, Emily and Archie have created is true Luxury. Each suite contains its own fully fitted bathroom and kitchenette and no expense has been spared to ensure you have the best nights sleep you have ever had.
Otters play on the shoreline below and seals bask on the rocks, if you are lucky you might get a fly by from one of our resident golden eagles or while tailed eagles.
A place to truly escape the hustle and bustle of life and see wildlife literally on your doorstep.
Plus as an added benefit you get to see our cows up close, in the landscape that the breed was established in.
The guys have very kindly given us a 10% discount code for any stays booked for April 24 (Enter Luing10 at the checkout).
So if you are struggling with what to get the other half for Christmas (less than 50 days to go by the way) I can guarantee you will not go wrong with a stay at WildLuing! Get booked in fast though as any April dates wonât hang around for long!
AH contractors over the last couple of years have been busy on Luing putting up deer fences around several new plantations, we have currently planted over 200,000 trees across 200 acres to create new broadleaf woodlands on some of our poor to marginal ground. While the woodlands are fenced off from livestock and wildlife currently it is hoped that in 20-30 years time the trees and surrounding land will form an integral part of the grazing rotation with cattle and sheep being utilised to develop and improve the mosaic of the land.
Alexâs new shop grand opening is on the 11th November so donât forget to pop across and have a look (after youâve bought your stock from the sale of course đ)
Crystalyx UK supply us through Carr's Billington with all our energy bucket demands, this includes upward of 40 80kg hi-mag buckets which go in front of all cows to ensure we meet Magnesium requirements during critical periods, we also utilise a similar quantity of cattle booster buckets which give excellent supplementation to all our Youngstock post weaning who after a brief spell indoors (7-10 days), winter outdoors in groups of 30-35. We aim to have as many of the heifers reach 380kg by 400days old as possible so it is important that the heifers stay on a rising plane throughout the duration of winter. We weigh all Youngstock at weaning/200days, 300days, 400days and 500 days so we have a regular insight into how both Individuals and groups are performing
Drew Hutton at NutriScot is helping us with our move to a more regenerative farming approach. With Drewâs help we have entirely cut out the need for fertiliser on the hill ground, significantly reduced fertiliser usage in the silage fields opting instead for regular soil testing, seaweed mixtures and micro nutrient foliar applications with a long term view to improving overall soil health. We are moving more into mob grazing with all heifers and ewe lambs mobbed and grazing silage aftermathâs and two large groups of 250+ cows/calves and 600 sheep in each mob moving weekly from hill to hill in order to give long rest periods before stock return. We are also utilising NoFence collars In some areas.
D & J Campbell Ltd are our go to haulage company, Ian and his fantastic team of drivers always go above and beyond. From delivering urgent hay to us after sudden weather changes to loading heifers direct from the boat decks on ferry slipways. Ian and the team do our market runs, abattoir runs and livestock deliveryâs along with bringing us fertiliser, fencing materials and so much more. If you are looking for haulage from the sale on the 11th then Ian will be around on the day for all requirements regardless of wether you need 2 or 50 head moving. Nationwide coverage provided, be it Aberdeen, Norfolk, Wales or just down the road. We are very Lucky to have such an exceptional haulier on the doorstep

****Position now filled****
A 6/7 month position has become available on the farm on the isle of Luing.
Starting in January, This position would suit a student or similar who has a basic knowledge of farming, (calving, lambing, tractor work) and an interest In Regenerative farming techniques and forage based suckler and sheep systems. The position offers an incredible opportunity to gain real time hands on experience in a variety of farm duties.
We are due to calve 320 pedigree Luing cattle from 15th February. Cattle are calved outdoors and all aspects of the birth and calf are recorded for both pedigree records and signet recording, so attention to detail and the ability to take and record data is a must. Alongside the calving cattle we also have 150 yearling heifers, 60 fattening cattle, 20 yearling bulls and 21 stock bulls. The cattle are kept in their founding families and bulls are kept and run in 5 family groups so this is an excellent opportunity to learn about pedigree lines and pedigree breeding. We aim to calve over a 10 week period with the majority of calves born in the first 6 weeks of calving. Calving moves swiftly into the lambing of 1200 NZ texel x Lleyn ewes with a mix of indoor and outdoor lambing. We lamb singles inside and foster on as many triplets as possible. Lambing lasts just 4 weeks. General farm work is ongoing throughout the full 6months with the position to come to an end following silage season and lamb weaning and sale. We do all our own silage in house and shearing generally falls around the same time. A driving licence would be highly advantageous due to our location. Accommodation will be provided in the means of a well maintained, modern, heated, static caravan on the farm.
For those that wish to be involved there is also opportunity to learn how to analyse and utilise the data collected on farm as well as day to day farm office recording and statutory record keeping.

CHARITY HEIFER
15 months ago Tooti Cadzow suffered a spinal cord injury due to a calcified disc and became semi-paralysed from the chest down. She ended up in the Glasgow based Queen Elizabeth hospital spinal injuries unit for just over 4 months.
The charity spinal injuries Scotland offer advice and help for those suffering from spinal injuries. In particular for Tooti they have a wonderful representative named Laura Torrance who helped immeasurably in building Tootiâs confidence and patiently answering all of her questions following her prognosis.
https://www.spinalinjuriesscotland.org.uk/
When back in Oban Tootiâs GP referred her to a rehabilitation and physiotherapy charity named Healthy Options.
https://www.lornhealthyoptions.co.uk
Rob Graham and the Healthy Options team have also played a huge role, not only in helping Tooti, but many others throughout the Argyll and Bute area, by providing after care and physiotherapy services for those suffering from a whole range of debilitating conditions.
In thanks and recognition of the help and assistance offered to Tooti by both of these charityâs the full sale total of bulling heifer lot number 52 along with any other donations throughout the day will be split and donated to the two charityâs
Lot 52 will be paraded around the ring after the bull parade and she will be brought forward in the sale to follow lot 45 prior to the start of the bulling heifer lots.
Lot 52 is Ballycastle A16. A roan, polled, quiet, kind bulling heifer, out of last years top price spring calving cow. Her dam was an excellent tempered, kind, milky, roan cow she sold to Mactaggarts on Islay for ÂŁ2625.00.
Any donations throughout the day will be very much appreciated
Our final sponsor for this yearâs production sale is D & J Campbell Ltd. Campbells do pretty much all of our livestock haulage and much of our other haulage. From running sheep and cattle to markets and abbatoirâs to fertiliser deliveryâs . We canât get a lorry onto the island so our livestock is brought off via tractors and trailers and then we do a ramp to ramp transfer with Ian and his team of drivers delivering them to their destinations. Ian will be present at the sale on Saturday and offering haulage solutions to buyers
Hamilton Ross Group are our 4th sale sponsor, they have been supplying us with machinery and implements for many years. From forage wagons and tractors to sheep and cattle weigh systems
Some of the spring calving cows for Oban In no particular order
Again I canât stress enough that the only reason these girls are for sale is their calf due date and we are wanting to keep our calving pattern exceptionally tight
1R77 has produced Luing Bulls- Luing Xander, Luing Yak and Luing Zion. Sheâs a quiet cow that tends to stay in the background and just get on with the job.
1X42 is a very easy to handle cow, quiet temperament and would very quickly become a friendly with a bit of time
7Y31 is very steady girl, easy handled and will follow a bag of cake
4Y47 is desperately inquisitive but hasnât yet braved becoming a friendly sheâs usually one of the first over to say hello but likes to keep a little safety zone around her. her dam produced Luing Vladimir and Luing Wildcat
3R162 is an unambiguous cow that stays unassumingly in the middle of the herd getting on with the job in hand. Sheâs given us multiple heifer calves and has plenty more years left in her
