In case anyone in Stalham doesn't know.. we have an election this week! But back in July 1895 there was also an election and candidates were travelling across East Norfolk to make their election bids! This area was strongly Liberal and when the author Rider Haggard came to Stalham to try and raise votes for the Conservatives he was met with more than he bargained for and ended up taking refuge in the Swan Inn. Here is the Newspaper report from his visit to the area................ 19th July 1985. Author Rider Haggard Besieged at Stalham.

RIDER HAGGARD BESIEGED. ARMED POLICE REINFORCEMENTS SENT FOR. EXCITING ELECTION INCIDENT. Mr. Rider Haggard, who yesterday made a tour of Norfolk on a drag with four horses met with very rough treatment at Stalham. Mud and stones wore thrown, Miss Harcup, one of party, having head cut open. At Stalham the party took refuge the Swan Hotel, which was besieged, and matters became ao threatening that the police were telegraphed for from North Walahain, Norwich, and Yarmouth. Shortly before midnight another message reached Norwich stating that the situation Stalham was very serious, and a party of mounted police was despatched to tbe assistance of Mr. Haggard's party. Mr. Rider Haggard was relieved from bis unpleasant position early this morning. A strong force of police armed with cutlasses set out from Norwich at midnight and drove to Stalham where they arrived about two o'clock. Before their arrival, however, a force of police from North Walsham. accompanied by 50 civilians, had already reached the scene, and the sight of these the mob, said to number at one time about 800, fled. Mr. Haggard returned to North Walsham with his rescuers, but had to leave Miss Hartrup, who had received nasty cut in the head, Stalham, she being too unwell moved. Mr. Haggard, who on reaching North Walsham received an ovation from his sympathisers, briefly addressed the crowd. He said that in all his travels had never seen such dastardly conduct as that of the Norfolk Liberals. Whatever might the result the election, the behaviour of the Norfolk Liberals would, he believed, affect the elections in all other agricultural constituencies throughout the country.
