Changing young people's lives through sailing since 2015. Organising free sailing lessons for schools
It’s December and we’re spending the brisk days reminiscing over this year’s sailing season. We can’t wait for the next one.

Thinking of a career in the marine industry? Whether you’re interested in the opportunities on the water or ashore, the maritime sector offers opportunities all over the world!
From watersports instructors, superyacht captains and military personnel to boat builders, brokers and other services on land, there's something for everyone.
Find out more about the opportunities available to you 👉 http://rya.org/l9N850QetOp
Enjoy today’s throwback Thursday post of our Tall Ship Maybe venturers from this year’s voyage.
We’re lucky to have talented people delivering sailing lessons at Polkerris Beach and Roseland Paddle & Sail.
Bob Warren is the founder and owner of Roseland Paddle & Sail at Percuil. He says: “Teaching the RYST pupils is incredibly rewarding. Often the children who come to our sailing school via the Trust have never had the chance to experience sailing or being on the water at all. Once they start and build a little confidence, it’s great to see them grow in stature before your eyes. In fact the RYST Schools Programme is so successful that two of my staff have come through it. It does change lives for Cornish children and offers an opportunity many would otherwise never have.”
Any of our young sailors interested?
GIFTS & CAREER CHANGES
Did you know you can book 2-5 day boat building and woodwork courses through Classic Sailing?
Slightly more dangerous is their 40 week professional boatbuilder training, which could be the career change you are looking for.
Classic Sailing teamed up with the Boat Building Academy back in 2023 as we felt there was a great synergy between a love of sailing wooden boats and the woodwork skills to build and maintain them.
The Boat Building Academy is on Monmouth Beach in Lyme Regis, only a stones throw from the famous Cobb harbour and fossil beaches. It is hard to imagine a more salty spot to learn new skills, without going to sea.
On Classic Sailing website is now a tempting array of short and long courses for budding woodworkers or boat builders. The short courses are typically £295 for 2 days or £695 for a Mon-Friday course.
Everything from traditional sail making to modern or traditional wooden boat building options, wooden boat restoration to GRP repairs, setting up templates to build a boat, clinker to carvel construction, laminating wood and strip plank construction, ropework to painting and varnishing professionally.
The longer courses are City & Guilds proper trade qualifications for the boat building industry, and there is a real shortage of properly trained boat builders in the UK.
There are bursaries you can apply for, for both short and long courses, and even a special bursary to encourage more women into the industry.
Read our article, with links to all the courses, or search under courses on our website.

Enjoy today’s throwback Thursday post, it shows the incredible pupils from Treverbyn School building their confidence on the water during one of their sailing lessons.
We love working with Tracey to deliver sailing opportunities to young people.
Tracey is on BBC Radio Cornwall with Jules Skentlebery at 12.15pm. Talking about Sailability. Listen live or on catch up!
We are incredibly fortunate to have so many talented people supporting the work we do at RYST at Polkerris Beach and Roseland Paddle & Sail.
It is her beaming personality, clear intuition and belief in the benefits of all the sea has to offer that really defines Poppy Burns, Chief Instructor at Polkerris Beach. She forges her own path and was a sailing and paddleboard instructor by the age of 16. Completely at home in the waters of St Austell Bay, Poppy has taught more students to sail than most at her young age. Doing what she loves is fundamentally important to Poppy and sharing her passion and belief in the positive benefits, both mental and physical, of being on or in the water is key for her. Poppy continues to develop her vision and find new ways to make watersports as accessible as possible in an environment that is supportive, encouraging and inspiring. She is happiest when she is making a difference.
The weather’s getting colder and the nights are getting longer, meaning our schools programme has come to an end. Keep an eye out for more posts about the programme over the coming months.
Recently pupils from St Dennis Primary School joined Roseland Youth Sailing Trust on a watersports activity day. Students were nervous at first but loved it. They said:
‘Kayaking was amazing and I can't wait to do it again.’
‘I liked everything because we worked as a team. The paddle boarding was loads of fun. I really enjoyed it.’
Willow is a star example of what can be achieved when passion, hard work and financial support all come together at the right time. Thanks to funding from , Willow first took to the water in the one-to-one and small group sailing courses organised by RYST during the pandemic for Brannel and other Clay Country schools. She went on to pass RYA Levels 1-4. Then she took part in the Aspire360 Round Britain Challenge with . Now she’s been selected for ’s Crew4Gold, a ground-breaking new talent search to discover female athletes capable of becoming Olympic medal-winning 49erFX crews. Click on the link below to hear from Willow in her own words in a video made with fellow-sailor Sam.
Meet Hannah, one the members of Team Maybe 2023 competed in the Tall Ships Races Magellan Elcano 2023.
For as long as she can remember, 18-year-old Callywith College student Hannah has sailed dinghies and rowed pilot gigs. She has competed in the Mirror National Championships and did a five-day voyage with Tall Ships Youth Trust in the Solent for her Duke of Edinburgh Award.
“My experience on the sea so far has always been with land in sight, but an ocean voyage like this is something I have always dreamed of completing. I am in awe of the distance that can be travelled by wind in sails. I love life on a boat, especially the routine and the opportunity to be surrounded by nature. There is always so much to learn. I can’t wait to get stuck into such an amazing opportunity on such an amazing boat.”
Last year I had built a beehive base with surrounding screen, to a specification from beekeeping legend, Michael Summers. The base “should be good for 25 years”. Unfortunately I placed it in the wrong part of the National Trust’s site in St Mawes and they want me to move it. Meanwhile I have realised I don’t have enough time to keep bees. So this fabulous structure is going free to anyone who wants to dismantle it and take it away (or for a donation to Roseland Youth Sailing Trust). Message me for more details.
Meet Jethro, one of the members who competed in Tall Ships Races Magellan Elcano 2023. To compete in the Ten Tors Challenge on Dartmoor, 16-year-old Jethro learned how to navigate on land. Now he wants to learn how to navigate at sea.
“I helped to fundraise for the RNLI at school (Penrice Academy) last year and learned a huge amount of respect for the sea and the people who work on it and sail across it. I enjoy teaching myself some basic knots and I’m really interested in using them in a real-world situation and teaching myself more of them. I’d also love to explore how a Tall Ship is run and I’m keen to be part of a voyage and team up with new friends. I have never been to Spain, but I can't imagine a cooler way to enter the country than on a Tall Ship!”
Such an exciting expedition for young people 👏👏👏
Our Expedition Netherlands voyage begins and ends in the fantastic Fowey Harbour. We can't wait to set sail on the 30th of March 2024 and explore all the offers! 1200 Miles, 37 Days, 17 Ports and 4 countries!

Meet Kiera, one the members of Team Maybe 2023 who competed in the Tall Ships Races Magellan Elcano 2023.
16-year-old Kiera studied at Brannel school. She loves water but has never sailed before and is looking forward to challenging her limits, as she’s had to in volleyball and in training to be a lifeguard. What started as facing a fear of putting her head under the water as a young girl transformed into diving into the sea fully clothed for lifeguarding practice. Now she wants to meet the challenge of sailing on the ocean.
“Living in Cornwall, the ocean has always played a big role in my life, from lifeguarding to poetry. I think the separation from everyday, trivial issues on social media in exchange for a vivid, communal adventure will make me feel good about myself and will act as a reminder of the challenges that are actually worth embarking on.”
Meet Lotte, one the members of Team Maybe 2023 competing in the Tall Ships Races Magellan Elcano 2023. Of all the venturers, the one most likely to take to life aboard Maybe straight away is 16-year-old Lotte. Her home – and her place of learning, as she’s home-educated - is her family’s boat (a gaff-rigged wooden ketch), which she’s lived on since she was nine. Lotte has sailed the East coast to London and from London to Cornwall. She can splice rope and hoist sails. She has her RYA VHF licence. And perhaps most importantly, she’s happy roughing it when she has to.
“I know what it’s like to live off-grid for long periods of time. You don’t always have access to hot water on board, and I’ve washed in cold water even in the depths of winter. I’m also used to living in a really small cabin. I would enjoy sharing my knowledge with my fellow crew if they’re stuck on how to do something. I will enjoy the challenge of crossing the Bay of Biscay and just seeing the sea around me. I love its wildness and the movement of the waves and that it holds the most beautiful creatures.”
Fantastic opportunities for young people! Go for it!

Meet Skye, one the members of Team Maybe 2023 competing in the Tall Ships Races Magellan Elcano 2023.
16-year-old Skye studied at Brannel School and spends every minute of her spare time in the water: kayaking, surfing, paddleboarding and coasteering with her family.
“I think that this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me, and I believe the skills and experience gained from this trip will benefit me throughout my life. As soon as I heard about the voyage, I knew it was something very special and a chance I couldn't miss. I will enjoy the freedom of being at sea and being one with nature and meeting new people with similar interests to me and making new friends.”

Meet William, one the members of Team Maybe 2023 competing in the Tall Ships Races Magellan Elcano 2023.
William, 16, studied at Penair School. A keen rugby player, he has often captained his local team, where he sees his role as ensuring positive, can-do attitudes.
“What I love about the sea is the freedom, and being guided by the elements, and mostly being away from all the tech and being in peace and quiet. I’m looking forward to the teamwork on a traditional boat, being at sea, night sails with the stars, learning new skills, making new friends and generally enjoying an amazing new experience.”
Meet Ethan, one the members of Team Maybe 2023 competing in the Tall Ships Races Magellan Elcano 2023.
Ethan, who’s 16 and studying at The Roseland Academy, has never sailed before. He confesses a slight fear of the vastness of the ocean but says he would love to overcome it.
“My dearest ambition is to see the world and travel. Having experiences like this on a Tall Ship working and learning new skills will prepare me for this. Fishing and navigating by the stars will be amazing. When I’m older, I would love to own my own boat. I’ve been to Spain on holidays and appreciate the distance involved. To cover it with the power of the wind would be amazing. I will also enjoy making new friendships and developing social skills in this once in a lifetime opportunity.”
Tall Ships Meet the sponsors #11

Meet Emily, one the members of Team Maybe 2023 competing in the Tall Ships Races Magellan Elcano 2023.
Truro College student Emily, who turns 17 just days before the voyage, will be following in her family’s footsteps, as both her father and her aunt have completed different legs of the Tall Ships race. Growing up in a small fishing village, she has loved the sea all her life.
“I’m always out on the water in boats and helping my Dad with fishing trips. I love the feeling of freedom and, far from shore, the sights and sounds are totally unlike anything else. I know how fragile the oceans have become and how important it is to look after them and reduce the impact we are having on them. I hope to be a trusted crewmate who works hard and always gives my best.”
Welcome and thanks to Tall Ships host port Falmouth Harbour who are sponsoring a place aboard Maybe for the first time. The deepest harbour in Western Europe, and third deepest in the world, Falmouth Harbour is the UK’s Atlantic gateway: the start or finish point for many historic voyages. A statutory Trust Port, it is managed as a non-profit for the benefit of all stakeholders, creating jobs and opportunities, and maintaining high standards of operational safety and environmental stewardship.
Says Miles Carden: “We’re looking forward both to welcoming the Tall Ships back to Falmouth Harbour after nine years’ absence and to playing our part in supporting and enabling 14 Cornish teenagers to join the race for the first leg to A Coruna. We trust they will have a memorable voyage on TS Maybe and return to Cornwall tired but elated.”
Meet Jacob, one the members of Team Maybe 2023 competing in the Tall Ships Races Magellan Elcano 2023. 17- year-old Jacob is a student at Truro College. He first sailed at Gorran, one of the primary school participants in RYST’s Schools Programme. He is looking forward to spending more time at sea.
“I love snorkelling and learning about animals that live in the ocean. On this voyage, I look forward to learning new things, working as a team and improving my communication skills.”
Our story
Our ambition is to inspire a generation of confident, inquisitive and enthusiastic sailors as well as positively impact young peoples lives through sailing. We want sailing to be available to all children and so we deliver sessions through our schools programmes, which currently supports 15 schools across mid-Cornwall. Alongside this, we support individuals to realise their on the water ambitions. We love watersports and in this sea-locked, geographically isolated county we believe that they offer the most accessible, exciting, fun and life-changing opportunities for young people. Our horizons are limited only by imagination. Explore, dream, discover...…..
