🌳🌎 Our Professor Kate Pahl and Dr David Cooper’s ‘Voices of the Future’ project aims to involve children and young people as co-researchers to explore the potential of future treescapes in mitigating climate change. It brings together environmental science with childhood and youth studies, education, English and geography, to focus on re-imagining treescapes of the future. Winners of the Northern Writers’ Awards 2024 unveiled 04/07/2024

Our Professor Andrew McMillan hosted New Writing North’s Northern Writers Awards last week, which saw several Manchester Metropolitan University successes, including BA alumnus Tom Branfoot, MA alumnus Callan Waldran-Hall, and Manchester Poetry Library’s Roma Havers. Congratulations, everyone!

The event also saw the launch of the new Tempest Prize which Andrew has set up with New Writing North.

Winners of the Northern Writers’ Awards 2024 unveiled Twenty-five writers from the north of England received Northern Writers’ Awards, collectively worth upwards of £50,000, at the Northern Writers’ Awards at a ceremony at Northumbria University, Newcastle.

Our Sonja Lawrenson and Matt Foley have co-edited the latest issue of the International Gothic Association’s journal “Gothic Studies”.

Their Melmoth’s Global Afterlives special issue is the first scholarly study dedicated to tracing the many afterlives of Charles Robert Maturin’s “Melmoth the Wanderer” (1820), with international contributors locating its influence across a diverse range of national and regional cultures, including those of Ireland, France, Russia, and Latin America.

Gothic Studies: Vol 26, No 2 Gothic Studies is the journal of the International Gothic Association, and covers the field of Gothic studies from the eighteenth century to the present day, providing an international platform for dialogue and cultural criticism in the sphere of Gothic from within every period and media form.

This special networking event - co-led by our Anjum Malik - brought together writers and industry professionals as part of the Manchester Indian Film Festival’s collaboration with Manchester Metropolitan University.

The event also celebrated an ongoing interdisciplinary project with BA Acting, MA Filmmaking, and BA Creative Writing students who have been working together to create the pilot for a TV drama series - debuted on the night.
