George III. Halfpenny. 1773. Non Regal issue.
This is an interesting contemporary copy of a genuine halfpenny. The style is quite good and it has clearly seen some circulation, however the mis-spelling 'BRTIANNIA' amongst other details gives it away.
7.67g. 28mm, slightly undersize and weight. Very fine for type, and rare.

Buying Roman coins. Honest advice.

The best advice that I can give you would be to always buy from a trusted source, particularly if you are buying online. The listings on the well known online auction sites contain huge numbers of modern fakes being passed off as the genuine article. Beware of descriptions such as 'Found in a car boot sale', 'Found in a tin in my loft', 'Left me by my Grandad' and even 'from an old European collection' because the picture of the item next to the description may be of something that was made very recently and worth nothing at all. The online auctioneers do not seem to want to do anything about this, and they still get their commission so maybe it is not important to them.
Pictured is part of a 'genuine' old collection that I purchased from a reputable auction house and that I am currently listing on www.coins4all.co.uk Any reputable dealer will guarantee the authenticity of what they sell for the lifetime of the purchase, but if you see something online that looks like a bargain, beware!

Produced by the New Zealand Mint, the 2017 Niue 2 Dollar Silver coin recreates the feel of the ancient Silver Tetradrachm struck between 512 and 50 BC. The reverse features an image of an Athenian Owl with the letters AOE representing Alethia, Orno, Eternia or truth, honour, forever. The obverse features the protrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Weighing 31.2g (999.0), contains one troy ounce of fine silver and have an edge design that allows them to be stacked. An example of the original Greek Tetradrachm on which the design is based is also shown. These items are available to purchase on my site, Coins4all.co.uk.

Germany 50 Million mark coin. 1923

This issue was produced as 'Notgeld' (emergency money) at a time when inflation was out of control in post war Germany. It had little practical value as a coin at the time and was more a commemoration of strong leadership in Germany in difficult times. Now regarded by many as a commemorative medal.
44.5mm. Good very fine. Scarce and unusual.

World War 1 British produced propaganda 'Iron Cross'

Obv. '1914 W HARTLEPOOLS SCARBORO WHITBY'.
Rev RHEIMS LOUVAIN AMIENS 1914' around a cross and W.
These crosses were commercially produced propaganda pieces mimicking the configuration of the German Iron Cross but ironically adorned with the 'battle honours' of 'war atrocities' perpetrated by German forces during the First World War. Hartlepool, Scarborough and Whitby were bombarded by the German Navy on the 16 December 1914 with over 100 civilians killed and over 450 wounded. Rheims, Amiens and Louvain were the victims of incidents during the German advance into Belgium and France in 1914. Rheims Cathedral was bombarded by German artillery on 16t September and 27 November; Amiens was also shelled. At Louvain, German troops massacred civilians and burned buildings, including the Church of St. Pierre and the mediaeval library.

I am lucky enough to have acquired this silver Tetradrachm from Athens. I think it is one of the most beautiful coin designs, and all the more remarkable considering that it is 2500 years old. The ancient Greeks really were superb artists.
