The diminishing course roof, with its origins dating back to Roman times, epitomises both sustainability and craftsmanship. This approach is still in our DNA today and we continue to produce random slates to make best use of varied size blocks of raw material in order to ensure our slates are made in the most environmentally sustainable way.

Random slates, laid from eaves to ridge in diminishing course, create a visually intuitive perspective with the largest slates anchoring the bottom of the roof. The thick, whittled edges of Burlington slate highlights the random sizing and each roof’s unique character, offering a distinct, traditional appearance that contrasts sharply with uniform, modern roofing materials.

Using diminishing size slates has become an increasingly popular choice in exterior design and it's easy to see why, it results in a pleasing aesthetic. For technical advice on our range of high quality, sustainable, British roofing slates please contact us at [email protected] or call 01229 889661.

We are pleased to congratulate Peter Tinsley on his outstanding achievement at the Southport Flower Show.

His garden, featuring Broughton Moor Rip Rap/Armour, architectural offcuts for the bridge and stream bed, and Westmorland Green walling, was a true masterpiece. The careful positioning of rockery along the stream’s edge added a unique dimension to the water’s movement.

Peter’s work was recognised with a well-deserved Large Gold and the prestigious Challenge Trophy. We are proud to have our stone play a part in his success.

At Burlington we take great pride in our team, many of whom have been with us for the span of their career. Recently we celebrated 40 years of service from Carl Barrows our Sawsman.

Carl started as a hand dresser working in roofing and then monumental. From here he progressed to his current role as Sawsman in the Saw Shed.

Carl was awarded gifts of appreciation including a Burlington slate fruit bowl by Lucy Cavendish, Director of the Holker Group and Richard Page, Managing Director of Burlington Stone.

Summer has officially arrived, according to the calendar! And it’s the time of year when outdoor space comes to the forefront of our mind, whether it’s our own garden or place of work, we all start imagining the possibilities that lie in the outdoor space that surrounds us.

Amongst many other clever landscaping ideas that were on show at Chelsea Flower Show this year, were decorative aggregates. Not least in the Silver Gilt and Best Construction winning Boodles garden designed by Catherine MacDonald of .

The beauty of decorative aggregates, unlike some of the more complex installations on show at Chelsea, is that they are easy to lay and can completely transform an area from undesirable to chic, sophisticated and inviting within a few hours.

When it comes to sustainability, one would be hard pushed to find a better product with Burlington’s aggregates forming deep within the Cumbrian Fells some 400 million years ago. From a simple garden border to a municipal recreation area, our extensive range of products can reincarnate a little piece of Cumbrian heritage into any outdoor oasis.

RHS - Royal Horticultural Society Chelsea Flower Show 2024 has closed for another year and are absolutely delighted to announce that the ‘Best Construction’ award has gone to Catherine MacDonald of Landform for her Boodles National Gallery garden.

On the back of the Silver Gilt award, the coveted ‘Best Construction’ is further recognition of the success of this year’s garden and huge kudos to Burlington Stone as it is awarded based on the quality, fabrication and installation of materials used.

Broughton Moor green slate was one of the two key hard landscaping materials used in the garden along with the striking water features and garden arches produced by Metal Engineering. Both were installed with the utmost precision and care by Gadd Brothers Trees and Landscapes. The award recognises, again, how Catherine has not only designed an inspired and beautifully creative garden but has also chosen the highest quality materials, fabricators and installers.

Richard Page, Director at Burlington Stone said of the dual award,

"I am delighted for everyone involved in the project. The reaction to the garden has been amazing, it makes me incredibly proud to hear the positive comments about the beautiful Broughton Moor paving and features crafted by the team at Burlington".

The level of detail in Catherine’s design is truly spectacular and you can learn in more detail in the link below as designer Catherine explains the inspiration for the garden which celebrates the 200 year anniversary of the Portrait gallery, and hones in on two iconic art movements, impressionism and pointillism.

It’s only nine days until our beautiful Broughton Moor slate leaves us here in Cumbria and begins its journey to RHS - Royal Horticultural Society 2024 Chelsea Flower Show and we are busy perfecting the finishing touches; engraving, honing, polishing and packing.

Here you can see a super example of Burlington’s traditional hand finishing methods as quarryman Andrew, adds a plucked edge to one of the Chelsea pieces, helping to turn Catherine MacDonald, from Landform's, vision for her Boodles garden into a reality; can you guess what it is?

When it comes to cutting down larger lumps, the use of black powder and explosions is sometimes better than the use of saws.

Our expert rock handlers know exactly where to drill the hole according to the faults and thickness of the rock, as well as prioritise safety of themselves and those around them.

*Delegated permission for revised working and restoration scheme at Kirkby Quarry, Burlington Stone*

Stephenson Halliday is delighted to have secured planning permission for a revised working and restoration scheme, incorporating surface water management infrastructure and viewing platform at Burlingtons' Kirkby Quarry in Cumbria.

The Section 73 Minor Material Amendments (MMA) application was submitted in May 2023 and secures a deliverable working scheme to continue the quarrying and processing of the world-renowned slate until 2050.

Working closely with Westmorland and Furness Council and the Environment Agency, the approved scheme makes provision for new and enlarged settlement ponds to benefit the water environment and reduced planning condition requirements.

Thanks to all those involved, including Hafren Water and Westmorland and Furness Council for the prompt decision which enables Burlington Stone and Burlington Aggregates to move forward with their operations ensuring they are able to continue to supply the finest quality roofing and other construction materials that help maintain the unique vernacular of the Lake District.
